Pairing: Sam Wilson x Reader
Trigger Warning: one reference to military service
A/N: I know this isn’t much, but I’ve really been struggling with finishing my fics. SO I decided to challenge myself to writing something in 20 minutes. No overthinking, no editing, just writing. And this is what I came up with. I hope you guys like it!!!
“Do you know what time it is?”
Sam looked up from the paper that he’d been writing on. His notes were scattered all over the place. There was no order to the work he’d been doing. Two notes from a week ago on top of the memo that he printed out last night. He even had the remnants of blue ink blotted on his forearm, evidence of his rush to keep writing before the ink could even dry onto the paper.
The point was, he was working, but he was also exhausted.
“Do I even want to guess?” He asked with a weak chuckle.
“You’re tired.” You stepped into his office. “You need sleep.”
“I can’t sleep.” He answered, rifling through his papers. “There’s so much work to do.”
“The work will be there in the morning.”
“This initiative,” He held up a paper covered in red ink, “Needs to have a press release by the end of week. This mission brief is already past due. And don’t even get me started on these damn resumes.”
You smiled softly as you circled his chair, gently dropping your hands onto his shoulders. “New recruits?”
He sat back in his chair with a huff. “Recruits is a strong word. Try bright-eyed does in way over their heads.”
“Something tells me you’ll whip them into shape.” You replied, sliding your hands down his chest.
He finally took a deep breath and relaxed into your touch while you leaned down to place your chin on his shoulder. You turned ever so slightly to press your lips to his cheek, your heart skipping a beat when he finally allows the corner of his mouth to tug upward just a bit. When he places one hand over yours, he sighs. “This wasn’t supposed to be me.”
“You are exactly where you need to be, Sam.”
“Steve should be doing this.”
“He chose you.” You reminded him.
You moved your hand to place your index finger under his chin, turning his head until he looked directly into your eyes. “Of all his friends, all the people he trusted, he chose you. If you love and respect him as much as you say — and I know that you do — you’ll trust that he made the right choice.”
Sam wasn’t used to this much affection. Any relationship he had since he came back from serving was fleeting. One night stands, sometimes a week or month if he was lucky. But nothing permanent.
You, on the other hand, were a pump of pure oxygen in a world that sought to suffocate him. Your smile made his worst days that much better. Your laugh was infectious. And what’s better, you left no room for debate when it came to Sam’s character. Bucky would joke that one day, your constant compliments would go to Sam’s head, but you knew it wouldn’t. Sam never gave himself enough credit, so you decided you’d give him extra. You would be the one to hold him up when the weight of the world pulled him down.
And he couldn’t be more grateful.
“You think he made the right choice?” He asked with a short nod.
“Steven Rogers was a man. He made a lot of mistakes. But giving you the shield?” You raised a brow. “That wasn’t one of them.”
Sam pressed his lips to yours, attempting to express the gratitude he felt since words never quite fit. As he kissed you, he felt his shoulders relax, the tension in his body rolling away. When you pulled away, you nudged his nose with yours as your victory loomed upon you. “It’s late, Samuel.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming.”
You helped him organize his work into piles, occasionally snatching away papers that he tried to read. Once you were done, you rounded the desk once more and headed for the door. Sam smiled as he watched you, his T-shirt covering your body as you walked toward the bed that you shared with him. Of all the men in the world, you chose him. Damn, he was lucky.
And to think you’d once only been the girl at the reception desk.
