Phannie Census Update 2026
TLDR: leave your suggestions for the next Phannie Census in the comments, itâs coming soon!
Phwoah dads, hello again everyone, phummina phummina! Iâm gonna hand it over to the mod since this math stuff is more her area *sexy end screen dance*
Hi everyone! For those of you who enjoyed last yearâs Phannie Census, I have great news! Iâm planning on conducting another (although unfortunately not as detailed as now I am enrolled in grad school and have negative free time). Iâm planning on writing the survey in a week or two but before I did I wanted to ask anyone who was interested for some feedback!
Things I learned from the last Phannie Census that will be different in this one:
1. The country option will now be a write in instead of a dropdown list. While write ins can be harder to count (because of typos, variations in spellings, etc), it will ensure that every participantâs country can be counted. Last year, I just googled âlist of every countryâ and didnât think about how politically contentious the definition of âcountryâ is, so Iâd prefer to ensure everyoneâs country can be counted.
2. I unfortunately no longer have the time to run analyses through a programming software and answer more complex and intersecting questions, so weâre going to have questions that can be easily analyzed in Google forms this time.
3. Iâm going to be more careful about the way I word numerical questions. Last year, anyone who started watching Dan and Phil in 2009 was mistakenly erased from that question at first because I included â(woah look at you)â after the option choice and my program no longer recognized it as a number. This shouldnât really be a problem in Google Forms, but Iâm gonna be extra safe anyway.
4. Iâm adding a question about how people found the survey so we can see how representative it is of all phannies/terminally online phannies/tumblr phannies specifically.
What I want to hear from you:
1. What questions do you want asked? Last year people said they wanted to keep the demographics but then have a mix of old and new questions. Which old questions do you want asked again? Which new questions do you want answers to? (Link to the final results from last year so you can see all the questions again)
2. What was something that bugged you about the last census that you want fixed? It doesnât even have to have bugged you very much. Or was there something small you really really liked you want to make sure I donât change? Let me know!
3. Should it be called a census or a survey? Technically speaking, we cannot survey every single phannie, although I would love to. Some have said theyâd prefer me to switch the title to survey while most say they donât care and some prefer census. I could do another poll about it, but honestly Iâm not expecting this post to get a ton of notes, so Iâll just ask the people who really care.
4. Literally anything else you want to tell me. Iâd love to hear literally anything you want to say about the census. Did you just think filling it out was super fun and you wanted to tell me? Did you think my questions were horrible and I did a terrible job at analyses? Please let me know!
Iâm planning on writing the survey in the next week or two then figuring out how to collect the results in a way I can easily disseminate, so I donât get too busy with school and never post the results. I should hopefully have the survey posted by the end of the month! My plan is to leave it up for a month like last time, but I might change my mind depending on how fast results are coming in/when Iâm able to write up results.
Last year, we got nearly 1,800 responses. While it would be super cool if we could get that high again, I doubt the sample size will be as large, given I havenât been nearly as active on this blog and Elvis blogs arenât really that popular anymore (if they were even that popular to begin with), but nevertheless I commit to the bit.
If you made it this far, hereâs the horrendous graphic I made to celebrate the results last year as a reward:
Let me know your thoughts!
