'Cause on the one hand, I love head-canoning silent protagonists as mute or non-verbal, at least to some extent. Because mute or non-verbal characters are fun! And Kris lends themself to this type of head-canon quite effortlessly.

On the other hand – and more importantly – Kris is, in fact, not a silent protagonist: even though the Player does kinda sorta force them to speak most of the time, they still manage to get a word in edgewise of their own volition relatively often, not to mention the fact that Kris had clearly been speaking prior to possession.

So, following that line of thought, I feel like it'd be quite poignant for Kris to speak their mind – out loud, out of their own free will, with their own text box and face sprite and everything – by the end of Deltarune, to really drive home the point of Kris being their own person and not just the player character.

However, bearing Undertale in mind, I think it'd be kinda badass to deny the Player Kris's voice – like, they'd still get the opportunity to speak voluntarily to their friends (to a fuller extent, I mean) or do this cool speech during the final showdown or whatever, but we just don't hear it. What goes around comes around and all that; they've been denied their autonomy and so the Player is denied the chance to assuage their curiosity.

But at the same time, I don't think Deltarune is actually going to be straight-up antagonistic towards the Player, and I've never liked this idea that just because things were a certain way in UT they have to be the same or similar in DR. So even if we never heard Frisk in UT, that doesn't mean Kris is going to get the same treatment.

Both UT and DR explore the connection between the the game and the player in really fun ways, and Kris as a character is such a fascinating extension of that and I'm going to be – and have been – balancing on the edge of my seat for years, waiting to see how their story unfolds.

As such, Kris's evolving ability to control how they say the things the Player makes them say, combined with the fact that every once in a while they seize the chance to make their own comments or let their personality shine through (hashtag let the kid howl), is, and I cannot emphasize this enough, INCREDIBLY COOL to me. It's been praised plenty by the fandom at large, but I'm never going to stop gushing about it! They're wrestling for control! And I have no doubt that Kris has been managing to influence the dialogue options more and more with every Chapter, even though that could be explained away with some Doylist argument. Slowly but surely they've been coming closer and closer to the surface! They've been bolder with their actions and weirder with their words, and even as I write this I'm getting ridiculously emotional about it all, because it's awesome and amazing, and if Kris Dreemurr has no fans then I am long gone.

So ultimately I can't help but think that if Kris comes to grips with the Player's presence (or overcomes their control somehow) and finally has the chance to say something with their whole chest, it'd also be incredibly cool.

Because then it can't be dismissed or overlooked, y'know? Their words will be seen and read and acknowledged, and not just surmised, not just rephrased by others. Kris won't be just "the player character that fights against the player", they will be so much more than "this kid we control".

They'll be undeniably equal to all the other characters. They'll be just as solid, just as real, unquestionably autonomous. They won't be reduced to a cage, or a puppet, or a problem to be solved.
