A second meeting with doctor Gideon was then arranged, this time at his research facility. You had been disposed of any identifications and personal items, then patted down by two officers in the anteroom before stepping into a disinfection chamber and then guided to doctor Gideon's office.

Before knocking on the door, Parsons turned to you.

“This is the last chance you have to back out. Once that door opens, all morals and ethics you built throughout your life will be useless.”

You nodded confidently.

You weren't a white dove by any means. It wasn't like you took pleasure in hurting and mending or building and destroying for the sake of it; you always saw beyond the tangible, what could be, what would be, even if it was morally incorrect.

Two knocks and Gideon's permission to enter.

On his desk, several folders of varying thickness were piled. Over the next two hours and half (perhaps more) he carefully explained what his research was.

You had heard about the T-virus experiments during your younger years, believing it was just a myth, an urban legend told to scare people into sleepless nights. But as Gideon handed you file after file, the photographs and the reports suddenly made the hair on your neck prickle in both shock and excitement.

You set down the pencil, straightened your back, stretched your arms and let out a mix of a yawn and a groan, rubbing your face.

“Bored already?” Gideon stepped into your lab, his hands clasped behind and a soft amused smile on his lips.

“Never,” you turned around in the stool, “but finals are kicking my ass. I'm lucky to have 4 hours of sleep anymore.” You stood up, now stretching your legs which were as stiff as tree trunks.

“Well, you are very close to the finish line. I hear from Parsons that you're acing your exams, anyways. Didn't expect any less from you.”

Victor leaned on the counter next to you, watching your face. Indeed your eyes were heavier than usual. You opted to wear simpler clothes under your lab coat, changed to more comfortable shoes, and your hair wasn't as neat as usual. None of that changed his feelings for you, though. On the contrary, the state you were in made him want to take care of you.

You turned your face towards him, finally returning a tired smile.

“Join me for dinner in my office. You can rest there if you need to,” he offered. It wasn't rare for you to have lunch or dinner with him, conversing about life outside the job, nerding out about music and books, or playing chess after the meal (you still had to win against him).

He had ordered your favourite food and poured you a glass of wine, and by the time you were finished you could barely keep your eyes peeled.

Victor coaxed you into lying on the sofa to rest despite your protests, insisting that you would be of no use if you fell asleep during lab hours. You would have protested even more if you hadn't all but passed out the second your head hit the soft leather cushion. Chuckling to himself, Gideon reached for his overcoat hanging on the rack by the door before draping it over your sleeping figure.

He watched as your face relaxed, a wild lock of hair falling on it. Victor couldn't help reaching his large hand to tuck the lock behind your ear, then running his knuckles over your cheek. You sighed and he retracted his hands, not wanting to wake you up accidentally. He straightened back up and moved to sit at his desk to continue working.

After some minutes, you shifted before bolting up, looking around in confusion with a hand over your chest until your eyes landed on Victor.

“What time is it?! How long was I out for?!” You swinged your legs down the sofa, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes.

“No need to panic. You were asleep for a mere 12 minutes.” Victor replied, amused.

You let out an exaggerated sigh while you lied back down dramatically, pressing Victor’s overcoat to yourself.

“I think I dreamed I was late to an exam! Shit…” You squeezed your eyes shut attempting to get a few more minutes of rest. It wasn't happening. “Right. Now the adrenaline’s too much. Who wants to sleep anyways?”

You stood up, putting on the overcoat and checking yourself out on the mirror next to one of the bookshelves.

“Not bad, eh?” You joked. The piece of clothing was ridiculously big on you. Victor laughed and shook his head, closing the book he had been consulting, standing to place it back in the bookshelf behind him as you took off the overcoat and hung it on the rack before joining him.

“Thanks for the food and the nap. I feel a lot better now.” You looked up at him. That lock again… Before registering what he was doing, Victor tucked that strand behind your ear once more.

He had expected you to push him away, to step back, to ask him what the hell he was doing, to stop being a creep.

Instead, your face flushed and you held his hand in place.

Victor leaned down, his forehead almost touching yours.

“What are you waiting for?” You encouraged him, brushing the tip of your nose against his.

His kiss was timid at first, almost unsure. But when you grabbed him by the tie, he couldn't hold himself back anymore. His tongue pushed its way into your mouth, his left thumb stroking your cheek as his right hand moved to your waist to press you closer to him.

Your free hand snaked down to his belt buckle, tugging on it as you moaned into Victor's mouth. His lips were now leaving a sloppy wet trail along your jaw down to your neck and you—

Two knocks on the door made you both jump, pulling away and straightening your hair and clothes. Victor cleared his throat as you quickly moved to the other side of the desk, allowing the unexpected visitor in.
