"Will I be treated on my first appointment?"

The answer isn't always straightforward.

Sometimes treatment begins during the first session. Sometimes the most valuable part of the appointment is understanding why the problem developed in the first place.

Two people can experience the same shoulder, knee or back pain but need completely different rehabilitation plans. That's why the first appointment is about understanding the individual, not just the painful area.

We'll ask about when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse and how they're affecting your daily life, work or sport. We'll also talk about what you're hoping to get back to, whether that's running, lifting at the gym, working comfortably or simply moving with confidence again.

From there, we'll assess the movements that are relevant to your symptoms. Depending on the problem, this may include looking at strength, mobility, balance or functional tasks that help us understand what's limiting you.

The aim isn't to make the appointment longer.

One of the biggest myths in injury recovery is that once the pain has gone, you’re ready to get back to sport.

If only it were that simple.

Pain is often the first thing to improve after an injury, but it’s rarely the last part of recovery. Your muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints may still be rebuilding their ability to cope with the demands of running, lifting, jumping or changing direction.

That’s why many people feel completely fine during everyday life but experience another setback shortly after returning to training.

Not because they’ve done anything wrong.

Because their body simply wasn’t ready for the level of demand they placed on it.

After an injury, we naturally change the way we move. You might favour one leg, shorten your stride or adjust your technique without even noticing. These compensations help protect the injured area while it heals, but if they persist when you return to full activity, they can place extra stress elsewhere in the body.
