The Blood Culmination (Maze Runner) 250k, Newt/Thomas Some time has passed on the Safe Haven Island since the events involving WCKD, but Thomas still seems to have some work to do getting over all of it - especially what happened to Newt. When Newt unexpectedly arrives on the island, alive and apparently free of the Flare, coming back from the dead proves a lot more complicated for both of them than they might have imagined - had either of them imagined it was possible at all.

First of all, I'm amazed by the organization of your writing style. The quality of your work is utterly dumfounding, and it's rare that I latch on to a piece of fanfiction the way I've sunk my teeth into 'The Blood Culmination'.

Your characterization of Thomas and Newt is incredible, and if I could have any goals for writing Newtmas content, it would be that it has a fraction of the accuracy your writing has.

Not to mention, it's long. In a very, very good way. I often find myself writing series that have dozens of chapters, and I almost feel guilty for it.

Yet, you've reminded me, that as a reader, if I enjoy the content, I don't care how long the series is. if anything, I want to consume more and more.

You've done an incredible service to the TMR fandom. Thank you.

Thank you so much, you are much too kind! It sounds like you connected with TBC in exactly the spirit of the way I wrote it. I was in such a heartbroken headspace after seeing Newtmas’ story on screen - just needing to look into every nook and cranny of these characters and all the tragedy and hurts that had befallen them and collect them all up and carefully heal each one. I couldn’t be happier to hear that all the different little pathways and details came together in a way that felt organized and ‘meaty’, if you will, to you to sink your teeth into, because it certainly IS long, and getting lost in the sauce is a very definite risk lol. I love that you mentioned characterization because one of the chief joys of fanfiction imo is the opportunity for character driven writing; just taking these characters the audience already knows and loves and delving deeper and deeper into their individual personalities and psychologies - and having your readers still be be interested enough to come along on that journey with you, because they love these guys too! It is definitely my favourite part of writing, though I know it is not for everyone. I once saw a discussion where a reader said they maybe just weren’t cut out for slowburns because the characters just kept having conversations rather than moving the plot, and another responded that it sounded like maybe it wasn’t a slowburn at all, but almost more of a character study. And that is definitely a lot of what TBC is lol.

I think you’ve hit on a really good point too about writing the content you enjoy. It’s a worry I hear from a lot of fellow writers - not always about getting carried away with the length - but that what they are writing is too 'indulgent', so deeply individual and personal to them, that they are 'just' writing what they personally want to read and so it can’t possibly be all that ‘good’ or interesting to anybody else. And I always answer that you’re a person, and you wanted to see a story like this one, so chances are there have got to be other people who wanted to see it too. And now there it is! Out there to be shared. A person who didn't dig character studies or long works wouldn't like TBC, but here YOU are, saying it spoke to you and helped you think differently about your own writing - which is always super cool the way writers inspire and influence each other simply by just being themselves and: writing lol. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a complaint from a reader that there was *too much* of what they wanted to see out there either, so writing your story as long as you need it to be and writing out as many words as you have the inspiration in you to give seem like great ideas to me! Keep it up! It’s another one of the joys of fanfiction, editing for length and marketability are tradpub concerns, not for us out here doing it just for the love of the game. <3 (Besides, if you read something later and decide you want to edit it down because a tighter version works better for you, it’s never too late!) Thank you again, that beast took nearly six years of my life. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. x
