When I was younger I’d scream and have absolute tantrums at the seemingly intolerable emotions.

For years now though I’ve mainly been at a place of empty complacency with it.

Most times that feels a lot worse.

It’s like when you still argue with your significant other, at least you know there’s still a flame.

When it stops you wonder if there’s any warmth left.

I haven’t expressed myself on paper in over half a decade because it was always so poor it made me feel worse.

Now I’m just forcefully shoving my self critiques to the back of my head, repeating that it’s about the feeling rather than the physical outcome and hopefully I keep with it because it’s kept me from self harming for a week now.

I know that isn’t much but it feels really good

54 (plus details) Pencil crayon on paper, 5″ x 8.25″, 2014

I haven’t worked with the medium in a while, but looking back at old pencil crayon drawings, I can remember how chaotic and tenuous the process was. I would work with little or no groundwork and let gut decisions and emotional inspiration take me to the final image. I think this is one of the ones that worked out. Eventually, I’d like to bring some of this over to painting when I have a better grasp over the medium. I think I can get there soon.
