She was twenty-seven when she died and was thrown into an unmarked grave as if she never existed for the tragically short amount of time she was on Earth.

Until the age of eight, Cosette was mercilessly abused by the Thenardiers, both physically and mentally, a stage in life when she should have been playing out in the sun carefree, not fearing the strike of a hand.

Eponine was seventeen when she died uncared for, never having the love she held for the man she had for so long admired from afar requited, after having spent so long in miserable poverty.

Gavroche was only twelve when he was shot—bright and bold, he still had so much life left to live.

None of Les Amis managed to breach the age of thirty; they were students, children who were brutally slaughtered for standing against tyranny when they shouldn't have had to fight an adult's battle and rather should have been able to mess around in their twenties.

Enjolras never grew to see the republic he had for so long dreamed of come into existence because he died when he was twenty-six.

Marius was twenty-one when he woke to realize that every single friend he had ever known was dead, that he would never again be able to speak or laugh or see the people he held so close in his heart again.

Andrew Lloyd Webber: Love Never Dies

Us: We want more pro shots like Newsies 2017 and Hamilton 2020 or live based films like Cats 1999

Universal Studios: We’re gonna make a terrible movie adaptation of Cats and the CGI will give your children nightmares and we’re gonna cast it terribly and ruin the whole show and ruin the reputation of the musical and destroy the hard work that the 1999 all star cast put in, and for some reason Andrew Lloyd Webber is condoning it.

Us: OKAY FINE. We give up.

Okay, let me first being by saying that if you don’t know what happens in Love Never Dies, then you’re more than likely not going to agree with a word I say.  My opinion draws not only on Raoul from Phantom of the Opera, but also on Raoul in Love Never Dies.

I honestly believe Hadley was the perfect Raoul.  He was elegant, refined, he has a wonderful voice, and– something I think is vastly important considering his character is the antithesis of the Phantom– he has the face of an angel.  He also has an amazing ability to act while he performs.  He plays arrogant, so well in fact that I think sometimes we forget that he’s supposed to be arrogant.  I feel like Raoul is your typical ‘I get everything I ever want,’ hero, but he’s actually very good at hiding that sort of attitude.

In the movie version of POTO (and in stage versions from the past), Raoul genuinely appears to be in love with Christine.  However, Love Never Dies obviously sets Raoul down a different path, one where we see him a drunkard & completely unhappy with his life.  It’s for this reason that I truly believe Hadley’s portrayal of Raoul was so magnificent.

I felt like he pulled that aspect of Raoul’s future into the character, but did so almost quietly.  He made Raoul arrogant, but he also made Raoul appear to truly be in love with Christine.  However, there are hints throughout Hadley’s portrayal, if you pay attention, where you see that he’s not so much in love with Christine, but more in love with the thought of conquering over the Phantom.  Christine is more a by-standered, a prize to be claimed.

Specifically, I feel we see this in that moment where Raoul asks Christine to sing so that they can trap the Phantom.  Hadley’s Raoul is forceful, refusing to allow her an out.  He gives her little choice but to sing, and Hadley’s use of anger really fuels the characters evident desire to trump the Phantom.

This is because I want to prove that Enjolras is not “that one guy full of anger and hate”.

-Allows Grantaire to be in the meetings

-doesn’t forbid Grantaire’s long rants (except that one time a little before the revolution starts)

-Allows Grantaire to go to Barriere du Maine

-When Marius starts that Napoleon speech, Enjolras is quiet and lowers his head - so he is not the one who starts an angry argue with others 

-Cries when he shoots the artillery sergeant

-Takes care of his friends - for example when Jehan is captured he is ready to do everything to release him

-Knows his friends’ best personality traits

where after those merry university days of the social justice group Les Amis de l’ABC, its memebers start to dissolve in their own adult life: Courfeyrac is an important lawyer, but doesn’t pay a single cent for his kids with a woman who’s name he can’t remember, Combeferre works as a scientist and has a wife, Bahorel has two kids, he’s a single dad. Feuilly lives drowned by debts and has to leave Paris because it’s too expensive, Joly ends up in a mental hospital after hypochondria turned into something more serious, Bousset married Musichetta, but not having Joly with them is the cause of both cheating on each other, Prouvaire traveled around the world after finishing their studies, but no one has heard of them in the past two years. Marius is still friend of Courfeyrac, but a big house with a wife and three kids doesn’t leave too much time for friends and meetings and thinking of revolution and liberty.

But their friendship definitely faded when Grantaire dies of liver cancer, two years after Enjolras graduated university. He left things unsolved between them, bitterness still hanging on their past conversations and a devastated, lonely Enjolras. He leaves his ideas behind for once and starts to work like a slave at an office, but then it hits him again: his youth with the reputation as the marble lover of liberty, fighting for what’s worth fighting, being capable to die for his ideas. He can’t throw away all what Les Amis had achieved, can’t he?
