Map of trans bathroom bans in the US
posting this because I keep getting annoyed by people misunderstanding which states actually have anti-trans bathroom bans, where those bans apply to, etc.
Like, only two states have real, "you could be arrested" bans: Florida and Utah. Both apply to "government buildings," which importantly does include airports but does not include private businesses. Florida's requires a gov employee to come in and ask you to leave the bathroom, and if you do not comply you could be arrested. So far, only one woman has actually been arrested under this law, MArcy Rheintgen, and she did so by announcing she would as an act of civil disobedience. Utah also has a ban, with a carveout for trans women who have had bottom surgery to use the women's, and no real enforcement method.
The existence of any of these bans, even just as words on paper, is a gross violation of civil rights, and a step toward trans extermination. But I keep seeing online trans people act like they are going to be disappeared for using restrooms in like, any red state you can name.
Its like we are pre-emptively applying hateful laws to ourselves and locking ourselves away, doing the bigots job for them.
