Was just thinking about how in Greek, Roman, Japanese and other cultures it was common for men to have lovers who were younger boys and the older was always the top and young were always bottoms because of how the social hierarchy worked (I know they also claimed it had to do with mentorship but the top/bottom dynamic had everything to do with hierarchy)
It’s kinda interesting that the Vikings had some of the same ideas, only between adult men. The idea of young men automatically having to be bottoms doesn’t seem to have been a thing. Instead it was based on who had higher ranking in society. A young rich prince could top a burly older warrior and it was common for both male and female slaves to prostitute themselves because nobody had lower ranking than them anyway.
(slavery in most old cultures was different from the cattle slavery seen in America btw. Slaves could have businesses, own house and family but had to pay part of their income to their owner so they had more autonomy than we’re used to thinking of today which is why they could make enough money to earn their freedom but I digress)
Anyway, we see this dynamic in the mythology of the gods too. Loki goes by Loki Laufeyjarson, taking his last name from his Æsir mother instead of his Jotun father which indicates that the Æsir had much higher ranking than the Jotuns. This in turn explains why in the story of King Gudmunder and wizard/werewolf Sinfjötli neither are bothered by loudly talking about their past sexual relationship in front of their men. Sinfjötli brags about all the times he banged Gudmunder, even getting him pregnant, and Gudmunder doesn’t deny any of it despite being a king. Gudmunder even used to live in Valhalla where he happily slept with all of Odin’s warriors and had them fight over him (Can I just say I love to imagine Odin in this scenario? Him just sitting on his throne, watching his warriors hack each other to death for a change to bed this thick jotun and just being like “Good to see they’re having fun 👍”)
