Inside comfort with Jerry Navarra
Hi there, and welcome to Inside Comfort with Jerry Navarra. In this brand new podcast, Iāll take a deep dive into the industry that I know and love. Iām fascinated by every aspect of the furniture industry, from the very beginnings; including raw materials and design, to my customerās experience. When it comes to talking furniture, nothing is off the table!
Iām well-known in Southern California for my families landmark company Jeromeās Furniture. I have a long history of providing quality furniture for the community at an unbeatable price. My family opened their very first furniture store over 65 years ago. My father started with a very simple goal, to make everyone in the community feel welcome. My family were passionate about cutting back on fancy storefronts and focusing instead on creating a positive experience for the customer. Even though itās not 1954 anymore and a lot has changed; I still carry these community and family values with me today. As we say around here, a passion for great furniture and treating customers like family, thatās the Jeromeās difference!Ā
Well, enough about me! Letās jump into our very first episode. Today, I want to take a close look at the mattress industry and the importance of sleep. This is a topic thatās really important to me and there are a few essential things you need to know before purchasing a new mattress. However, before I start talking about mattresses, I think itās important to understand more about sleep and its importance in our daily life.Ā
Ā First, letās take a look into why we need quality sleep and what exactly quality sleep is. How many hours of sleep are you meant to get every night? Seven? Eight? Nine? Actually, this isnāt the best way to look at sleep. You know the old saying, quality over quantity? The same thinking applies to mattresses. Even if you get eight hours of sleep, if they arenāt quality hours, youāll wake up feeling grumpy and tired!Ā
Ā The latest scientific research indicates that we need quality sleep in order to feel well-rested and refreshed in the morning. According to studies from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders, there are four stages in the sleep cycle. Each cycle takes approximately two hours and all are essential for getting quality sleep. The most interesting and important stages of the sleep cycle are the last two. In stage three, our body is undergoing a repair process. This is where our organs, hormones, blood flow, and pressure all experience change. During stage four of the sleep cycle, our brain finally becomes active and it works on organizing information, cleaning up neurons, and storing long-term memories. This stage is also commonly known as REM or Dream Sleep, and itās at this point that our brain refreshes and recharges to take on the challenges of the next day!
Ok, so we know a little bit more about these last two stages and how they affect our body and brain. So, what happens when we wake up during these stages? Did you know that if you are disturbed because of any kind of discomfort that you may stop going through your sleep cycle and start at the very beginning? That means that even if you sleep for eight hours if youāre tossing and turning, you wonāt be able to fully complete your sleep cycle! That could lead to a whole host of health problems, from depression, high blood pressure, heart issues, irritability, and fatigue. In fact, studies have shown that there are links between a disruption in this sleep cycle to dementia and Alzheimers, later on in life. Itās obvious that quality sleep is an essential part of our physical and mental health and well-being.
So, if you want to improve your quality of sleep, what can you do? The most common things that impact sleep are stress and anxiety, pain, noise pollution, drugs, caffeine and alcohol. On top of this, an uncomfortable mattress can also have a massive impact on quality sleep.
Think about it this way: how comfortable is your current mattress? Do you think that itās comfortable enough that you wonāt be disturbed during a two-hour sleep cycle? Simply put, if you have an uncomfortable mattress you could be experiencing all kinds of preventable health problems.
Finally, now weāve got all of the health and science out of the way, I can focus on what Iām truly passionate about, furniture. Now that you know the health benefits of having a great mattress, you can need to choose a mattress that works for your body, lifestyle, needs, and age.
Iām so passionate about finding the right mattress for my customers that Iāve developed The Complete Fit Process. Do you want to know how it works? Well, imagine visiting your optometrist for a new pair of glasses. Do they just give you one lens to try? Of course not! The optometrist will try a variety of different lenses to get the one that works for you. Why should a mattress be any different? There are so many long-term health issues that can happen from not having the right mattress. This decision is way too important to not take the time to do it properly.
At Jeromeās Furniture, we have experienced and trained specialists who use Paired Comparison Decision Making to find the right mattress for each unique customer. In fact, according to studies, this method of selecting a mattress means that itās ten times more accurate than simply picking just one mattress. The Complete Fit Process is completely free and the health benefits will last a lifetime.
At the end of the day, itās essential to choose your mattress carefully to get the right fit for you. By changing your mattress to one thatās comfortable and supportive, youāll get that quality sleep that you need and be able to wake up feeling refreshed, energetic, and ready for the day!
