Fandom for the last 6 or so years has become very unwelcoming and so many people treat each other as bad actors. Like sincerity and earnestness are all read in bad faith. I go into tags for media I enjoy and scroll through some wonderful fanart, fics, gifs, etc. and then get to a point where it’s wall to wall text posts about how This Is The Correct Way To Interpret The Thing, or If You Like This Interpretation You’re Evil, or If You Think That’s What It Means You’re An Absolute Idiot A Buffoon A Moron Of The Highest Order.

Even my own attempts at engaging with fandom in recent years have been met with willful misinterpretation, just people putting words in my mouth. And I don’t mind being corrected if there’s something I’ve missed, but it’s beyond that into straight mocking or entirely misrepresenting what I’ve said.

Fandom has propagated moral indignation as a forward interaction and uses it to put a lot of people down and demoralize engagement. I feel it’s also used as this kind of shield for when fandom doesn’t want to interrogate its own failings and issues—it’s easier to make out like you’re the victim, or that if someone disagrees with you it’s because they’re actually bad people normalizing bad things. Because nuance is dead and all fiction correlates to real life, I guess.

And I’m not wanting to discount racism, misogyny, homophobia, or transphobia in fandom. I know those have been problems forever and have made fandom entirely unwelcoming for much, much longer for many more people than myself. Saying fandom didn’t used to be like that is disingenuous. But, something is still different now. Like, it’s very difficult to have a genuine discussion without it quickly devolving into finger pointing and smugness.
