Hi! You can call me Pen (I also go by Athena in another fandom, if you prefer that). This is probably going to be my MCYT side blog, though; Iâll mainly post and reblog Hermitcraft, the Life Series, and tangentially related fandoms.
I also write Hermitcraft fic that can be found here!
Anything related to Curseverse (currently my main series) can be found under the tag #curseverse

Messaging people for the first time is so hard. What am I supposed to say? Like, "You seem really odd and your blog intrigues me. Do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters?" What! Whatever. I will just follow you back and stare at your blog with my big beautiful brown eyes.
Reblog if you're okay with people coming into your DMs with the "you seem really odd and your blog intrigues me, do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters"
How does being/becoming a guard like Orion work? Whats it like?
There isnât really an official process for most Watcher roles; some Watchers just specialize into a specific skill (most commonly with Constellations) that suit them to perform their role. Specifically, Watchers like Orion and Vela have built their abilities around fighting and hunting/tracking beings down, so theyâre just naturally the Watchers that are called when that needs to be done.
The only âofficialâ role is Archivist. Archivist Watchers are specifically assigned to their job in manning the Archives.
As for what Orion does, as a guard itâs mainly to keep watch against any intruders, and/or keep any other curious Void creatures away. As a hunter, he searches out any being that a Watcher might be looking for, usually a Voidwalker (in conjunction with Auriga) or sometimes a human. Heâs not always going for the kill; sometimes it just for the purposes of finding where someone is. Itâs actually pretty rare for him to be chasing down and trying to capture a WatcherâGrian was definitely a special occurrence.

What about the minecrafters that were friends with argo navis in season 1? Howd they feel/what were they told when argo navis died/was split. Did he just disappear?
Most of them donât know the truth. Argo Navis just told them that he wanted to cut ties, take a break from Hermitcraft, and pursue other interests, so as far as they know heâs just out there somewhere doing his own thing. If both sides arenât putting in the effort to communicate, itâs not uncommon to completely lose contact with a Player.
Iâm sure some Players did find the abrupt drop off in contact strange, but itâs not like they could do anything in the end.
Were Viole and Fish really just taking turns in winning those sparring matches? Biggest mystery in the whole fic I swear (nit rly I always think about it tho)
Mostly! It's not completely settled beforehand, but since both are fairly evenly matched, usually it gets to the point where the winner of the last match will kinda just be like "I'll just let him have this one" and loses. Sometimes one of them will be having a bad day and it will be a more legit win, but their record is more or less even.
If they actually fought each other seriously with intent to hurt or kill, it would be more of a stamina battle than anything else.
What do Watchers in training do for fun? Terra mentioned it was weird that Grian stayed in his room all day but what did they do instead? What do any Watchers do for fun?
Most Watchers in general spend their time in groups of 2-3, since after they become full Watchers they usually work in groups. (There are some exceptions, but those are usually special cases). For fun, they usually practice Watching things in the Void, fly around, or build things. Watchers in training generally live in a small world XD they don't really know of much else.
For most Watchers, their room is also more of just a storage space. Most summoning as it's referred to colloquially refers to when an item is constructed out of thin code on the spot. But with more specialized/specified thingsâfor example, notes a Watcher might take in a class or about a worldâsummoning that is just teleporting the object from their room.
Watchers in training will sometimes study in their room, but most prefer wider spaces (like the Archives). So a Watcher constantly in their room is a strange sight.

Youâre seeing the minecraft movie in the movie theatre. Everyone is having a great time. Jack Black seems a little excited. âWe have a surprise for you guys.â Jack says. All of a sudden most of Hermitcraft comes out and start singing âRevenge.â When Jimmy gets to the chorus, someone else starts singingâŚ
"I've got a deal with destinyyy-"
Lights flash everywhere, and you see CaptainSparklez singing âRevenge" along with Hermitcraft while Jack Black is singing âHermitgangâ. Everyone in the crowd is going wild and crying. Then if things couldnât get any better, Etho walks onto the stage and face reveals, holding the gay flag.
If Hermitcraft was created by Xisuma and Argo Navis how did Generikb become admin in season 1? Howâd they start getting players in the first place?
Both of these will be answered in the rest of Hiding in the Blue...when I finally get it done uhhhhhhhhhhhâhopefully soon. ^^||
But since they're not really spoilers for anything major...it's not like your Player name has to be your full name (if you even have one). A lot of Hermits use a Player name that only contains a part of their name, and there's Players like Joel and Lizzie with SmallishBeans and LDShadowLady whose Player names don't contain the names they use at all. Argo Navis did not use Argo Navis as his Player name.
As for how they got Players for Hermitcraft, it was a mix of making and then inviting friends and also just some ads here and there. Back when Hermitcraft was created (both in-curseverse and real life), SMPs as a concept were just starting out, so it would've been a lot more eye-catching then than a new SMP would be now. So some Players simply thought it was interesting and asked to join.
I decided to start compiling speech patterns and such for the Hermits I watch the most, because being a fic writer is hard sometimes đ then I thought âwhy not share it here?â
so hereâs my very rough analysis of my most viewed Hermits, this is just what Iâve managed to gather so please donât call me out for what Iâm missing
-
Scar
Rarely stutters in normal speech. Maybe pauses if heâs started a sentence and doesnât know where itâs going, but he doesnât tend to trail off unless something interrupts his train of thought
Stutters a LOT when heâs startled. Also makes âhoo!â noises repeatedly before he finds his words
Lays on the charm THICK when heâs trying to convince someone over literally anything; compliments their looks, their handiwork, and then pitches his proposition in smooth segue. Not one to entertain haggling though (however he DOES do a âlook if youâll pay full price Iâll throw in xyzâ thing). King of upselling even the most mundane things.
His tone is cheerful most of the time, no matter what heâs saying. Heâll actually often say very disturbing things with a light voice (ex. when discussing how to retaliate ie âwhat should we do about him?â âwe could kill him! :)â)
Builds and locations somehow are always capitalized in his voice?? Like he says them differently. I canât really explain it (when he talks about Aqua Town or Scarland or The Big Dig)
Literally has an evil laugh when he thinks of a way to prank someone or mess with people
Hums in thought quite often, and uses âhuh!â quite often when confused or finding out something new (Mostly with redstone)
His farewell is almost always âByeeee, have a great time!â even if the conversation he left was not a pleasant one. Iâm almost certain he does this in tense situations just to get under other peopleâs skin and really push how unbothered he is
Doesnât tend to insult people, the farthest heâll take it is backhanded compliments
That said he is not afraid to outright threaten (âI will murder them.â)
References media a lot, both for concepts for builds and in speech (ie his greeting âWell hello there!â is from Star Wars)
Number one exclamation is âSweet Baby Jellie!â
(More under the cut!)
Grian
Cold opens, both in videos and conversations (rarely says âhello, how are you, etcâ when encountering someone, but he does say farewells/âthank youâs)
Likes to sneak up on people and scare them if he realizes they havenât noticed him yet, usually does so by getting real close and then yelling (âHEY!â/âHI!â/âWHATâS THAT?â)
Uses the name of whoever heâs talking to pretty often while speaking to them (âWell, Mumbo, you never knowâ/âSo, Scar, as you can see here-â), same goes for often addressing his audience (âyou allâ/âyou lotâ/âyou guysâ)
Usually pretty focused (when he wants to be) but oftentimes takes a minute to laugh at things he notices in the natural environment (An accidental face in a build, a mob in a strange place, etc)
Takes the lead in a conversation if nobody is the clear leader, but generally only speaks when spoken to if someone else has risen to that spot
Clarifies instructions after something is explained, both to his viewers and to anyone heâs grouped up with (most often seen in the Life Series)
Uses âPardon?!â/âBeg your pardon?!â most often when surprised or startled (heâs very British), also sometimes uses âSorry??â
Things are way more funny to him when heâs tired
Deadpans a lot in conversation ie âwhy not do xyz?â âWell because weâll horrifically die đâ
This man is allergic to committing to the bit unless heâs the one that initiated it
Not one to sugarcoat (âhow is it?â âwell to be honest itâs miserableâ)
Number one exclamation is âWHAT?!â (though he often uses âoh my GOODNESSâ quite a bit)
Mumbo
The start of nearly every episode is almost a pitch, does the same when bringing up an idea to others (âI have this ideaâ/âI was thinkingâ/âI noticedâ etc)
Often laughs a little at himself when he speaks
Also often brings up how inexperienced/unqualified he thinks he is with literally any task heâs doing
Gets very distracted with the smallest things
Uses similes a lot when trying to describe a concept (âIâm thinking a this-type thingâ/âSomething like a [xyz]â/âImagine like a [thing]â)
His voice gets higher when heâs startled or panicking
A very vocal thinker, which makes sense because heâs a MC Youtuber, but he also just. Seems to think out loud regardless
Comments a lot on the feel of things (âOh this feels menacingâ/âThis looks like itâd mess you upâ/âThis makes it feel very intimidatingâ), often with building
Extremely modest. However will celebrate when he does something right in redstone/building (âYES! Oh my days, that took foreverâ)
Once and a while will have a rare banter moment with people heâs comfortable with (ie teasing and making fun)
Related to above, he gets very giggly when heâs hanging out with people heâs familiar with (Grian and Scar most often, but also Iskall)
Number one exclamation is âWhat on earth?!â
Joel
Greets people most often with âHow you doing [name]?â/âHow are ya [name]?â
Heâs very northern. He often leaves out words in his sentences bc thatâs just the way his dialect is (âWhat you doinâ?â vs âWhat are you doing?â)
Says his thâs like fâs (âsomefingâ/ânofingâ/âfinkingâ) ((Stress also does this))
His jokes/teasing are very deadpan (âI made you this extra thing, because youâre trash at thisâ)
Actually gives gifts of resources very often, and always leaves it with a little note and signs his name
His voice gets higher pitched when heâs defensive/being extremely cheeky but other than that his tone rarely changes
This man. Flirts so much. If any other person initiates even the slightest of flirty banter he takes that and dials it to eleven I cannot believe this is a straight married man sometimes
Joel commits to the bit 100% of the time (slightly related to above), unless of course itâs jokes about his height
Makes a point to compliment himself if he gets the chance (words most often used are âhandsomeâ âstrongâ and âhumbleâ, as well as comments about his muscles and physique)
Insults his enemies diminutively (âlook at you down there, tiny idiotâ/âYouâre wrong and also weakâ) ((seen most often in Empires SMP)
His most often used insult is âidiotâ
When heâs flustered/frustrated he uses âbloodyâ a lot (ie âbloody heckâ or âthis bloody thingâ (loves to toe the PG line), also uses âbloomingâ (âbloominâ heckâ)
Most often used exclamation is also âWHAT?!â
Bdubs
Opens videos very jovially, talks almost like a radio host
Breaks down his builds down to the block, spends a lot of time discussing his block pallet choices and giving tips while he builds
Uses the affirmation âsure enoughâ a lot, and often addresses himself as âOlâ Bdubsâ
Talks affectionately about other hermits often (â[name], the absolute sweetheart, left me some materialsâ, â[name], you angel!â)
Adding to above, âangelâ or âsweet angelâ seems to be his most often used affectionate terms
Switches on a dime, though, if he gets offended (which of course causes others to poke fun at him even more)
Calls mobs âstupidâ a lot when they donât do what he wants (but takes it back if he says it to one of his horses ex. âCome here, stupidâwonderful, I mean, beautifulâ)
THIS MAN IS THE #1 HORSE ENJOYER. He gets a horse first thing every season and rides it everywhere, and theyâre always a focal point of his theme or builds in some regard
Pauses whatever heâs doing to sleep as soon as itâs possible, and gets very antsy if he canât do it for some reason (âOne moment, time to shreep!â)
Related to above, EVERYONE messes with him if heâs trying to sleep in their presence ie breaking his bed over and over, and he gets increasingly more frustrated when it happens
Rarely is soft spoken or quiet, he projects his voice and uses a lot of emphasis in his tone
Either straight up screams (and peaks the mic đ) if heâs startled or scared, or yells âoh my GOODNESS!!â

coughs. Everypony who wishes to hear about scott secret life episode 7 and is old enough to catch their own prey please gather under pride rock or whatever the fuck they say to call an emergency meeting these days. I need everyone to know why this episode is so unusual for him⌠I take back anything I have ever said about gem in my entire life that implied disinterest; Gem and her zombie apocalypse scared the SHIT out of Scott. NOBODY HAS EVER MANAGED TO DO THAT BEFORE.
He is incredibly confident and difficult to intimidate, as he lives under this assumption that everything is under control. Anything that threatens this assumption is corrected as soon as possible, for his own peace of mind. Oh, so and so hates him? He does something nice for them, so now he has something to bring up if they think about attacking him. Oh, heâs about to die? He takes himself out on his own terms, so that even the inevitability of death is something he has a say on (See: double life finale, many limited life deaths, the start of secret life episode 7). This philosophy is behind like⌠90% of everything he does, feeling in control (even when things very much arenât) is something very important to him.
When Scott is told about the zombie apocalypse, what does he do? He says no thank you, and he goes back home. The reason he gives to the survivors is that he thinks the zombies are only after green names and therefore it isnt his problem. but like. considering that bdubs was infected as a yellow, there is actually no way that he wouldnât have realized that reason is bullshit. Scott is smart. That isnât the real reason he brushes off THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. The real reason is that he thinks bad things canât happen to him unless he lets them happen; he thinks that he is safe as long as he plays it safe. Gem already advised him to stay clear of her this session, Gem is his friend and ally, and Gem has *no reason* to go after him, so he believes himself exempt from the apocalypse⌠Almost.
He decides to approach the zombie army directly anyways, and give them a gift: a disc and a jukebox! This is how he plans to settle any remaining doubts he has: to reassure that yes, they wonât go after him, because heâs made himself a good asset (and to Gem and Impulse, a great one). He should still be exempt anyways, of course (this is why he felt safe enough to even approach them in the first place), but it doesnât hurt to reassure himself that he is by reminding them that he is nice and friendly and helpful and good to keep around. Yes, this should keep the target off his back for sure. This is how Scott avoids and resolves a good 80% of conflicts; playing the social game is how he survives, itâs how he feels safe and like everythingâs under control.
But Gem is different. Gem doesnât care. Her army doesnât care.
They surround him, they mock him, he runs and they chase him. Gem says (almost playfully) âHey Scar, you wanna take the first hit?â and Scott repeats âfirst hit?â in this sort of quiet disbelief. He gets away, but it shakes him; heâd heard his own heartbeat (represented via a heartbeat sound effect played during the scene), he was genuinely scared. because⌠that Should Have Worked. As per usual, heâd played the social game well this entire game, so realistically Gemâs army shouldnât be after him, itâs even led by his ally ffs. It doesnât make any sense to him. He later assumes it was entirely the task, the task made Gem untrustworthy, so he still calls Gem and Impulse his allies. That is, until Gem dies, and respawns back at their base.
The first thing Scott does is compliment Gem, tells her to do a little twirl to show off her new red outfit. But he can hear his heartbeat again. Heâs still scared. The second thing he does is downplay how much he knows, and ask for an explanationâ âOh my goodness, whatâs happening? I know thereâs like a zombie apocalypseâŚâ but Gem isnt listening. Instead, Gem announces how much of a good job Joel is doing, having killed Skizz! Gem takes an innocent step towards Scott, and Scott steps back. Gem notices. She takes a couple more steps. Purposeful this time. Threatening. Scott goes for Plan C: He shows off how useful he is. He warns her that Martyn trapped her tripwire, all while backing away with every step Gem takes. But Gem doesnât care about that. She knows heâs scared. She wants to make that known. âHow are you feeling?â she asks. Itâs rhetorical. She knows EXACTLY what heâs feeling. She just wants to hear him say it. So Scott makes a break for it. Gem chases. He still tries to give her an incentive to stop, telling her that he hears digging, doesnât she want to go see what the digging is? She hits him with her sword, says she just really wants to do some damage. Scott yells âYOUâVE DONE ENOUGH DAMAGE, GEM!â to which Gem yet again asks how heâs feeling. Scott says âHURTâ and Gem lets him get away.
Scott hardly ever lets himself feel fear, but when he does, he (being as reputation focused as he is) almost always defaults to a fawn response. but gem is not a fawn she is a deer with antlers who will maul you in the woods and leave your body for the worms and fungi to clean up. Scott tried to appease her in any way that he could, flipping through every method that usually works⌠and for the first time, it all failed completely. He did everything he could have done to prevent this, and she still hurt him even though he gave her no incentiveâ he gave her nothing but incentives not to, in fact. It doesnât make any sense! He canât avoid this, he canât will this away, he canât even fight back because Gem is stronger and Gem wonât back down. Scott was never in any real dangerâ Gem hadnât even planned on killing him, as it wouldnât have counted for her task. She just hit him a couple of times and let him scamper off. But Scott was still noticeably more afraid in that situation than he is during actual real attempts on his life. Because Scott isnât afraid of death, not in itself. Heâs afraid of outcomes he cannot predict, and he is afraid of what he cannot influence. By being his ally all season, ignoring all of Scottâs attempts to make peace and then chasing him down anyways, taunting him the whole wayâ Gem proves in an instant that she can not be influenced at all. She could bite scotts arm off just because she feels like it. And (gestures to opening paragraph) for someone who needs to feel in control to feel secure, this is a huge problem.
Scott recounts this interaction to Cleo, and Cleo asks Scott why he didnât just hit her back. He tells her outright: âyeah that scares me.â And itâs not hard to see why. Gem is genetically engineered to scare him shitless. Scott fears feeling powerless, and most of all he fears fear itself. Gem not only attacked him, but she toyed with him, she took joy in it, and she made him think about how it made him feel.
tldr: scott needs to feel in control to feel safe. gem is more powerful than scott through not giving a fuck about his niceties. this mixes badly, and scott cowers for the very first time.
On a related note: I think I would kiss cgem passionately under the moonlight.
This got reblogged again and I would like to add on to this now that weâve seen how it all shook out
it is actually fuckin wild that gem kicked scott around like a scared puppy and hunted him for sport for an episode only for them to go back to business as usual next episode, but it also. Makes sense. In what is perhaps the most scott move of all time, he decided it wasnât a big deal actually, for the sake of keeping good relations with his alliance. He goes so far as to open up the next session by gifting Gem a heart, to show how âover itâ he is. And considering that he typically likes to keep his heart to use as a bargaining chip later on, I think this was an attempt to make sure Gem didnât try that shit again via his beloved fawn response. Which is really funny because again, that doesnât work on Gem, she was still like âok lets kill themâ about her scotts towards the end of the session (I love you gem). Lucky for scott he was already considering letting gem kill him anyways so it worked out fine, but he was very likely going to get killed there no matter what
In the next and final episode, Scott is still a bit wary. Heâs dedicated to helping Gem at this point; sheâs his alliance so he Has to be (being wholly dedicated to his current alliances to the point of self destruction is part of his identity), but considering (gestures towards Gem gleefully trying to kill him) all that, he doesnât really trust her. Letting Gem kill him in ep8 was further insurance towards Gem NOT attacking him again down the line, but when Gem starts negotiating with Pearl, Scott still feels the need to pull her and impulse aside for a âband meetingâ to say âGem. Gem. I want you to remember that both of us let you kill us. You have to make sure that no matter what other alliances you have, this is the top one.â which is bullshit btw Scott makes other alliances all the time, and Gem rightfully calls him out on it (âyou cant be lecturing ME on having other alliancesâ). Scott just wanted to make sure that his sacrifices actually paid off
Ultimately this didnât end up becoming anything so overall I dont really have a point to make here, but I did think it was worth discussing because his alliance with Gem is a lot more unique than it appears on a surface level in comparison to how Scott alliances usually function, considering that he both didnât trust her and was completely unable to scott-shitfucked-relationship-cycle.png his way back into feeling comfortable about it, so he made a series of concessions and just fuckin prayed instead. In some alternate universe Gem and Scott are arch nemeses but unfortunately that was not this universe through the power of scott being able to put up with just about anything as long as it benefits him to do so over the alternative. Late stage gem and the scotts was like an extended version of his temporary last life alliance with joel and grian where they tested firework rockets on him and he was like đ ok. do you guys need string
Okay, so Grian never Graduated. And sometimes it's mentioned that Grian isn't a fully-fledged Watcher (I think because he never Graduated?)
Does this mean Grian is, according to Watchers, still a fledgling? like, according to Watcher customs/laws, Grian is a child, or something like that?
Because that could be entertaining
In a manner of speaking, yes XD. Although Watchers (and Voidkind in generally) don't really give too much attention to age, and power is usually what determines respect. Generally speaking, any Watchers that haven't "graduated" and only have a single set of wings is going to be treated as lesser. Grian does happen to be young for a Watcher, but that doesn't affect the Watchers' treatment of him as much as the fact that he never got his second set of wings.
