If you're wondering why there's so much resistance to the idea of a 4-day work week, or why automation hasn't actually led to people working less like it was supposed to...
These policies can help to improve the mental health of students
If the point is for the children to learn, then why wouldnât you give them as many chances as it takes? What is the benefit of telling a child âyou failed and thatâs the end of itâ?
Iâm 25, and in my trade school, our tests arenât judgement, theyâre testing to see what weâve retained, and identify what weâre missing.
If I weld a joint, and the CWI comes up behind me with a radiographic test for it and finds that I just laid hot metal on cold metal or it looks like a sponge inside, you know whatâs gonna happen? You think theyâre gonna give me a low score and tell me to move on? Fuck no. Theyâre gonna hand me a grinder and tell me to take it out and put it in right.
When thereâs actual work to be done, we donât leave it at the first attempt if that attempt was shit. We donât leave a trail of âwhatâs done is done.â If it takes you four attempts, thatâs what it takes, and next time itâll take fewer because you learned how to do it right after the third time.
School, as itâs set up, with unforgiving deadlines and single attempt high stakes tests are building a shitty work ethic. It says âI tried once, and thatâs all youâre getting.â It sets you up to leave a trail of cut losses and barely or unfinished projects as you scramble to get something, anything, turned in before the deadline.
And we wonder now why nothing works at launch.
Things that will make your computer meaningfully faster:
Replacing a HDD with an SSD
Adding RAM
Graphics cards if you're nasty
Uninstalling resource hogs like Norton or McAfee (if you're using Windows then the built-in Windows Security is perfectly fine; if you're using a mac consider bitdefender as a free antivirus or eset as a less resource intensive paid option)
Customizing what runs on startup for your computer
Things that are likely to make internet browsing specifically meaningfully faster:
Installing firefox and setting it up with ublock origin
adding the Auto Tab Discard extension to firefox to sleep unused tabs so that they aren't constantly reloading
Closing some fucking tabs bud I'm sorry I know it hurts I'm guilty of this too
Things that will make your computer faster if you are actually having a problem:
Running malwarebytes and shutting down any malicious programs it finds.
Correcting disk utilization errors
Things that will make your computer superficially faster and may slightly improve your user experience temporarily:
Clearing cache and cookies on your browser
Restarting the computer
Changing your screen resolution
Uninstalling unused browser extensions
Things that do not actually make your computer faster:
Deleting files
Registry cleaners
Defragging your drive
Passively wishing that your computer was faster instead of actually just adding more fucking RAM.
This post is brought to you by the lady with the 7-year-old laptop that she refuses to leave overnight for us to run scans on or take apart so that we can put RAM in it and who insists on coming by for 30-minute visits hoping we can make her computer faster.

One of the fun things about using tumblr is every once in a while your dash will get flooded with a very specific kind of content and you have to ask âokay, did something happen in the world recently to make everyone care about this, or do i have one mutual thatâs just really into posting about johnny appleseed todayâ
Its time to play everybody's favorite game show....HYPER FIXATION OR UNPRECEDENTED EVENT!!! *cue game show music*

âenemies to loversâ sure okay, but nothing wil ever beat THIS dynamic

I want to point out that they were smoking on their lunch break. Having characters smoke is the way that they let the audience know that the characters fucked without actually showing them fucking. (This is really common in older movies/tv shows, and still exists to a lesser extent today.) My point is, they canonically had a quickie on their lunch break
Why do people talk with such authority and assurance on things they clearly know nothing about?
@noblepeasant
Aye, you see my point. They were going to relax and get away from their wives. They werenât having cigarettes because they were going to fuck each other, like the dolt above me would presume.
@noblepeasant
As I explained in a previous comment that you couldâve easily read:
Smoking, specifically two characters smoking together, was a common way to show that characters had sex when sex on tv/movies was not acceptable to show but smoking was. Itâs symbolism. It isnât exact and isnât the only thing that smoking can symbolize.
This symbolism became common in early tv/film bc smoking together was a common post-sex activity around that time. The masses watching those type of scenes would easy understand what just happened without it being shown. This isnât the case now (in America at least, there are other countries where this practice is still fairly common) so the original intended meaning behind those scenes have been forgotten with time.
The symbolism of smoking cigarettes has evolved and expanded over the years to reflect public opinion. Nowadays, itâs much more common for smoking to indicate a villain than than it is to indicate sex, largely bc sex is more socially acceptable now than smoking is. However, that doesnât mean this has gone away. If youâre looking for it, you can find this symbolism in many shows and movies today - largely ones marketed to an older audience.
Also, have you ever seen a kids show/cartoon? Thereâs sexual references all over the place.
I understand that people bs on the internet and that just bc something is said with authority doesnât make it true, and you should always question things youâre told are fact. But like. Google is free.
âMy point is they canonically had a quickie on their lunch breakâ is what you said, as though you were an authority on it and knew it for a fact. Why? Because they had a cigarette on their lunch break.
Smoking was, and still is, a way that people relaxed. Smoking on your lunch break was, and still is, a very common practice. I donât know what kind of world you live in where people only ever have cigarettes after sex, but it ainât the real world.
I said it bc itâs a common s y m b o I i s m, or was anyway. And yes, Iâll admit that I did say it as fact when there are other possibilities, but I also said it bc itâs a funny observation I saw and I wanted to share with others who I thought could use a laugh.
Also, Idk what kind of world you live in where wolves and dogs smoke cigarettes, or have jobs, or where wolves live in houses, but it ainât the real world
i miss when everyone had a giant, ancient family computer that required family know-how to operate. like youâd go to a friends house and you guys would try to play club penguin or whatever and before you turned it on your friend would be like âoh, before you start up, unplug the mouse four times and kiss the top of the monitor, or the screen will only display in black and whiteâ and youâd just say âokâ and try to pretend their computer wasnât some kind of evil death machine that smelled like smoke when you ran too many programs
@avinox canât leave this in the tags lmao
WHY WAS THE WORM SO STRONG
Our original family computer had Duke Nukem 1&2 on it, but if you opened the programs it would immediately crash the computer. The workaround was to open Chex Quest and beat the first level (and first level only!), then quit the program. This would cause the Duke Nukem games to work normally.

I believe theyâre acceptable on-exhibit enrichment for naturalistic facilities like Brookfield in Chicago, too.Â

at the farmer's market the baby was pointing at the tomatoes and going ba ba ba and signing "on" so my sister was like "how much for just one tomato" and the person at the stall was like "oh he can have one. don't worry about it" and the baby stood there by the stall devouring the tomato like an apple in big messy bites and people kept stopping and going "awwwww" and then "oh man that does look good" and buying a bunch of tomatoes. all natural organic advertising

I remember someone on here saying zoomers treat teachers the way boomers treat retail workers and I havenât been able to stop thinking about it since. Seriously, some people act like teachers are servants for their students and take âthe customer is always rightâ mentality and turn it into âthe student is always rightâ, when no, theyâre not, especially when the attitude of some students boils down to, âI canât believe this bitch Karen expects me to actually show up to class, read these texts, and analyze them đ Iâm going to speak to the manager email the department chair if you hold me accountable for missing class and not turning in work all semesterâ
Iâm thinking about college students because my mom has been a professor for +30 years and sheâs like, clearly the first person to have ever told some of these adults ânoâ in their lives lol. Sheâs always willing to help students who are struggling but trying, but she has no tolerance for students who do things like *checks notes* literally laugh in her face when she told them they didnât meet the minimum requirements for an assignment, and then act shocked when she kicked them out of her office for that lol. Or students who were shocked that they were marked absent for missing class because they went on vacation or decided to sleep inâliterally, a student had a mandatory conference scheduled, missed it, and later sent an email saying, âSorry, I decided to sleep in.â My mom was like â?? So you decided it was fine to waste my time??? And now you expect me to go out of my way to reschedule with you??â
And thatâs the thing. A lot of these zoomers are mentally stuck in high school and think teachers arenât people and have no lives of their own outside the classroom, so they should have to bend over backwards to accommodate students who feel like they have no obligation to meet the requirements of courses they signed up for. Itâs the same thing when students are outraged that they face penalties for missing deadlines (when they donât have accommodations from the university for a disability, of course), but teachers donât make deadlines because they hate students, itâs because they have deadlines, too, and need to have the assignments turned in to give students grades! You donât have deadlines because your teacher is a bitch, you have deadlines because thatâs how the adult world works, and it doesnât revolve around you.
Some of these zoomers even lie to get out of their responsibilities, too. Recently, again, a student emailed my mom like âoh Iâm late to your class every day because I have a class before that, which ends in the first 5 minutes of your class, and my professor wonât let me leave early :(â And my mom was like, ââŚ.The universityâs computer system literally would not let you register for a class with a scheduling conflict like that. I double-checked this with the head of the department.â And then the student got real quiet đ¤Ą
Like, yaâll are supposedly adults lol, fucking act like it instead of acting like rude, entitled, overgrown 9th graders to teachersÂ
@wingsy-keeper-of-songs I donât get why zoomers think itâs okay to act like this at all. I would have had my ass handed to me if I pulled anything like this.
Some people are just dicks, of course, but my mom thinks the increase in this behavior is from the pandemic. Her colleagues have been lamenting similar behavior in their classes, too, like students refusing to turn on their cameras for virtual classes and just not doing in-class activities online. They really just sit there with no microphone or camera all class, do nothing all senester, and expect to get full participation points or whatever.
My mom is seeing a really academically behind group of students this year, but again, sheâs willing to work with the ones who try. For the ones who miss class and donât do assignments and lie in their excuses, her theory is that these are students who got away with not doing much work for two years and just lied and didnât face any consequences from their overwhelmed high school teachers during the pandemic. So they came to college thinking they could do the same minimal amount of work, miss class whenever they feel like it, and still skate by with a C, and theyâre shocked when professors are like âno, you missed half of our classes by the midway point of the semester, you need to withdraw or take the F.â Itâs a generation used to having their parents call up their high school teachers and complain whenever they get a bad grade. Once again: very âIâm going to speak to the manager.â Thereâs usually an appropriation of the language of social justice, too, like people saying deadlines are ableist because they have anxiety. In my momâs experience, the students who actually have accommodations from the disability resource center arenât doing thisâthose students work hardâitâs the ones who do nothing all semester and are outraged by their bad grades at the very end. And for the record, my mental health was in the gutter in college, but I never acted like this lol. Maybe it was because I knew teachers are actual people, idk
@5-5-kâ No youâre right, I donât think students should be disrespectful in high school, either. I just think that high school students tend to face fewer consequences for their behavior because people usually cut younger folks some more slack, they can get their parents to call up and complain to the teacher for them (whereas college professors are never obligated to talk to parents), and high school teachers tend to be more overwhelmed and have fewer resources than college professors, so theyâre more likely to say âugh, itâs not even worth itâ and let shit slide. You know what I mean? Especially during the pandemic, Iâve heard from high school teachers irl and online admitting to letting misbehavior slide because times were so hard.
But yeah, high school teachers donât deserve rude students, either. It reminds me of how the youth outreach program at my work recently had to deal with a high school student who started yelling and cursing out a teacher just because he wanted to talk to him after class about his chronic lateness. They had to confront the student about his behavior like, âwe know youâre going through stuff, but you cannot treat teachers like that or else youâre going to get kicked out of the school. Youâre not a little kid anymore and we canât help you with your education if you get kicked out for cursing at teachers like that.â
Thatâs a more extreme example than what Iâm talking about here^, but still. I remember my peers being so rude to my high school teachers that it was embarrassingÂ
Itâs also the parents. This generation of parents are so hands off with their kids. They donât set boundaries or teach their kids to respect boundaries.
Itâs like so hard to teach a child the consequences of their actions, when they go home to parents who let them get away with everything or think itâs no big deal.
