Cuzzy’s Ice Cream Parlor, 618 S. 5th Street, Phila, PA
Stopped into Cuzzy’s Ice Cream Parlor at 5th and Bainbridge today, on the recommendation of Mitch Cohen of Cohen & Co Hardware. Cuzzy Angiolillo was serving 7 excellent flavors today, I tasted his blood orange sorbet which was far more complicated than I expected, with hints of cherry and blackberry, but a confident puckering citrus. I kept tasting new notes, each bite had almost 4 distinct beats to it, initial acidity, sweetness, then a spicy note which led to a dirty, peppery, tart finish. Complicated and delicious.
Like all his ice creams, the strawberry flavor, which I had on a sugar cone, was made Philadelphia style (without eggs) and on-site. He had just placed the tub in the glass case freezer, which meant it was still a good bit softer than the other ice creams, and therefore a bit creamier as well. I barely made it 4 blocks before I'd already snarfed the entire thing down. Pieces of blondie, almost like a pie crust, added a pleasant chew to the scoop.
Cuzzie's has been open since November 2022, and he told me they're using italian gelato machines and local ingredients. He plans to turn over flavors regularly, with day or week-long specials making appearances.
