Letās talk about how to Luke the entire point of music isĀ that itās like an energy, it connects us with people. I want that connection with everybody.
He is all about the audience; for him, music is about the people it is for.Ā And then comes Julie.Ā
At first, in Bright, he poofs in looking at her - he doesnāt know the audience can see him - but with the exception of their duet he remains essentially focused on playing for the crowd. Heās focusing on them when he poofs out.
In Finally Free, he poofs in entirely focused on the audience. He focuses on Julie plenty in this song - I know you have Iāve got a spark in me/and youāre a part of me living in your brain rent free - but even though he clearly has a moment of realization about the crazy talented girl in front of him, heās still pretty focused on grinning at the whole audience when theyāre done.Ā
And then we get to Edge of Great. He comes in 100% focused on her and that barely changes throughout the song. He is all about Julie, come sing with me Julie, please just look at me Julie, Iām begging you Julie.
He canāt take his eyes off her. Thereās no audience anymore; itās just Julie and the fact that she wonāt sing with him and you know what comes next:
All of the music in that moment is about connecting with Julie. Not the crowd. That guitar solo is for her. Nothing in him is wavering, he has eyes only for her, he has music only for her.Ā
It ends like this: for a moment, there is nothing but the two of them. He poofs out without a glance at the audience. Sheās the only one that matters.Ā
The next time Lukeās on stage, itās with Caleb. He spends the whole song looking angrily at Caleb, desperately at Reggie. He spares fairly anguished glances at the audience, but not much else. The audience was what Caleb was trying to use to draw Luke in, that connectionĀ with people, who could see them, who could cheer for them - it doesnāt matter. Heās not looking at them.
Then we get to Stand Tall. Luke is laser-focused on Julie the entire time.
No matter who is singing, no matter whatās happening, his eyes are on Julie, his body is tilted towards her, youāre a star, Julie,Ā and he canāt look away.Ā
The song ends. Itās the Orpheum. Luke just got to play the Orpheum, the thing he died trying to do, the venue that was meant to write them into the history books, to turn them into legends, to connect them with everyone,Ā and what is he doing?Ā
Heās looking at Julie. Not at the audience, not at the people cheering for him - no arms raised high and soaking it all in. Itās allĀ Julie.
Itās only Julie.
No music is worth making, Julie, if weāre not making it with you.

When your best friend and your dad both say they donāt like Peeta and theyāre on Team Gale
Food for breakfast time (as in, Iāll think about this more when Iām not so sleepy): perhaps the dichotomy of Peeta and Galeās worldview differences have less to do with war and peace and more to do with āhow do you play the game?ā Gale follows the rules, which is sort of odd, because we paint him as a rebel, and he is? sort of? but okay like I canāt help noticing how often he uses the systemās tactics, the tactics heās learned from years of abuse, as his tactics. He tells Katniss not to think of the tributes as people. He says heās going to play by Snowās playbook after Peeta is hijacked. Iām not saying he doesnāt have reason to do so, but his way of fighting back, down to the parachute bombs, draws inspiration from the very system that oppresses him. Peetaās whole thing is not wanting to be a piece in the game, not wanting to play by the systemās rules. I donāt suppose itās a surprise then that he is instrumental in getting the rules changed in the first arena, and that he repeatedly refuses to do what is expected of him by the system: being compassionate when it would be easier to be selfish, doing the impractical thing if it means disrupting the way things are for the better, and so on. Understand this: Iām not saying āGale bad; Peeta goodā but itās an interesting avenue of exploration, I think, when picking apart their worldviews. Gale uses the tools of the system as they are, but I think Peeta likes to turn the tools on their heads. Iāll see if I think the same once Iāve had my coffee tomorrow.
I feel the same, though I have corrected some typos.
I love this. It really shows me how Gale isnāt as ābadā as we may think. He just is willing to play by Snowās handbook, whereas Peeta wants to break free from it by not using his rules.

Peeta Mellark // The Hunger Games
āI want to die as myself. Does that make any sense?ā He asks. I shake my head. How could he die as anyone but himself? āI donāt want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that Iām not.ā
I bite my lip, feeling inferior. While Iāve been ruminating on the availability of trees, Peeta has been struggling with how to maintain his identity. His purity of self. āDo you mean you wonāt kill anyone?ā I ask.
āNo, when the time comes, Iām sure Iāll kill just like everybody else. I canāt go down without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to⦠to show the Capitol they donāt own me. That Iām more than just a piece in their games.ā
I wanna save this forever š
