Sailing While Black | 64 Parishes https://ift.tt/2TESmwW #ADPhD #slaveryarchive —- “When Augustus Smith entered New Orleans’s Second Municipality slave prison—situated where the Mercedes-Benz Superdome stands now—he met, among the enslaved prisoners, scores of other free black seamen from port cities scattered throughout the world: New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Annapolis, Havana, Nassau, Kingston, Veracruz, Liverpool, Le Havre, and even Bombay. Some had been held for months, none had been convicted of a crime, all were held as captured runaway slaves. As persons presumed enslaved, they had no right to trial, no ability to sue for their release, and no means of contacting family or friends. None knew when—or even if—they would ever be set free. In April 1841, Augustus Smith joined five other sailors in smuggling a letter from the slave prison. The seamen vowed to resist their captivity, writing that as “men that have been suckled with that sweet milk of Liberty and freedom,” they would rather “Lay ourself Down and die like men” than continue to suffer such “arbitrayrie power on us.” They also expressed confusion: why, they wondered, did Louisiana officials seem so “afraid to have us put at Liberty?” ” https://ift.tt/2TCfThY Follow #ADPhD on IG: @afrxdiasporaphd

A bill against lynching passed Congress, but several Republican members voted against it.
This!! Is my favorite!! Way to cleanse!! I have birds, and sound is one of the most effective, bird-safe ways for me to cleanse objects, my apartment, myself, etc.
Besides the methods in the picture (if you can’t see the picture, those methods are clapping, ringing bells, and leaving woodchimes in your yard and by doorways), I’ve also gotten good results with singing/chanting, playing musical instruments (my trumpet, especially), and even just playing a cleansing playlist on my Spotify.

Tahnee Lonsdale at pt. 2: Oakland.
Currently on view at pt. 2: Oakland in Oakland, California until March 6th, 2020 is artist Tahnee Lonsdale’s solo exhibition, “Dad taught me to tie knots, mum, the names of flowers.”
Often beginning with photos of discarded furniture she’s encountered on the street, Lonsdale uses her brush to deconstruct and reshape the photographed images into anthropomorphic paintings of genderless human-like forms in domestic settings or semi-erotically engaged. Using bright yet gentle colors in oil paint and aerosol, Lonsdale explores gender roles and sexuality, employing domestic context and furniture both as metaphor and as literal extensions of the figures. While the inclusion in some of the works of a vase of flowers is a direct reference to Lonsdale’s mother it also acts as a visual link to the traditional still-life or genre scene, deftly subverted by the strength and power of Lonsdale’s mark.
