FEATURING YUUKO ICHIHARA!Â
Itâs just so incredible to see her back again, everything else aside. I went looking and we haven't had Yuuko on the cover in twenty chapters. Which would have originally been a gap of about... just under two years? Going off the publication dates of the manga? Which means I timed that pretty accurately actually, I think my gap between the two chapters is about the same.
The visual details we get on the cover here are a nice little parade of all the little Yuuko symbols weâve picked up over the years; we get the phases of the moon in a ring behind her, along with mirrored crescent moons in the bottom corners; we have flowers both as a pattern on the fabric and stretching out into the real world, in long wreaths but also as hair adornments; we have butterflies in silhouette dotted around the page, both real and not real (one looks like a tattoo) (which! Happened once before!), and even one in a cage; and we have her signature swirl of smoke drifting around it all.Â
Itâs very nice to see, a nice little reminder of all her iconography, but with little touches that are slightly out of place. The lines in the background, for example, donât all line up with each other - if you look at the patterns on either side of the smoke trails they donât match. (And when Clamp want them to match they DO match) The mirrored moon symbol in the bottom corner is interesting too, Iâm not sure they usually do that? Though this might be wishful thinking of me, I've just gone clicking through the last 50 or so chapter covers and I can't spot any other times they've put the moon in each of the corners like that. Wild? I could have sworn they had done that recently, but I suppose the mind will just fill in the blanks when it wants to.
And perhaps Iâm seeing what I want to see, but Yuukoâs expression feels very different from what you would expect from the natural her. She can do severe, she can do spooky, though she is usually having a bit of fun, and at times she does suffering - but none of that is here. In contrast to the long line of Watanuki covers weâve had in the cage arc, where he tries to imitate Yuukoâs mystique, here Yuuko Ichihara is placid to the point of complete neutrality. It might not mean anything in particular, but it feels like "The Idea of Yuuko Ichihara" rather than an appearance of her actual self.Â
Still absolutely gorgeous either way though!
Now, FINAL CHAPTER?!
xxxholic 109 continued
In which WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
LAST TIME ON XXXHOLIC:
CLAMP FUCKING DID IT. THEY GOT ME SO BAD. I DIDNâT SEE THIS COMING EVER. EVER EVER EVER.Â
WATANUKI FULFILLED HIS WISH AFTER WELL OVER A HUNDRED YEARS. (WHAT THE FUCK?? WHAT THE FUCK????) RIGHT WHEN I THOUGHT TEN YEARS WAS EXCESSIVE I GET KICKED OUT A WINDOW AND CLAMP LAUGHED THE WHOLE WAY DOWN.Â
HERE I WAS THINKING WATANUKI WOULD FINALLY REALISE HIS WISH AND BE ABLE TO SLOWLY CONNECT WITH ALL THE PEOPLE IN HIS LIFE AGAIN, FINALLY MOVING TOWARD THE FUTURE
GUESS WHAT. NO!
NO THEYâRE ALL DEAD!
HE WAITED OUT THEIR ENTIRE LIVES AND THEY ALL DIED BETWEEN THIS CHAPTER AND THE PREVIOUS ONE!
WHICH MEANS CHAPTER 108 WAS ACTUALLY A MUCH BIGGER GOODBYE THAN I EVER COULD HAVE THOUGHT POSSIBLE. IT WASNâT JUST WRAPPING UP THEIR ARCS IN TIME FOR THE END OF THE MANGA IT WAS THE FINAL TIME WE WOULD EVER SEE THEM BEFORE THE 100+ YEAR TIME SKIP AND THEY ALL DIE OFF SCREEN.Â
WHAT THE FUCK!
AND! AND THIS MEANS THAT THE BEGINNING OF THIS CHAPTER WAS ALSO A TRICK. I THOUGHT THESE WERE ALL RATHER UNREMARKABLE SCENES WITH DOUMEKI AND SO I SKIPPED OVER MOST OF THEM IN THE RECAP BUT NOPE THAT WASNâT EVEN DOUMEKI THOSE WERE HIS DESCENDANTS.Â
MAYBE IT WAS EVEN A DIFFERENT ONE EACH TIME?
Or⌠no not quite, counting this scene there are 6 Doumeki moments we get, so I suppose some of those could be the same guy. Or there doesnât have to be just one, there could be multiple Doumeki brothers per generation. Maybe the first scene was even Doumeki! Maybe they all were except the last one! FUCK IF I KNOW OH MY GOD.Â
It just occurs to me that the thing Watanuki was saying a couple of pages ago about âOh that much time has passed?â which I totally didnât get in the moment WAS A REFERENCE TO THE FACT THAT ITâS BEEN WELL OVER A CENTURY, AND NOT JUST A DECADE.
IâŚ
Oh gosh what do I do with this! Watanuki comes to the conclusion that heâll never see the actual Yuuko Ichihara again. Which, you know, I would have hoped he might have figured out a long time ago, but here we are, and heâs learning it right now. But he finally does seem to accept that that was it. Yuuko doesnât actually exist anymore, and so he canât see HER again.Â
BUT THEN. IâM NOT SURE IF HE MEANS IT?
He confirms that he can actually leave the store again, but that heâll also keep running the store. Thatâs fine! I donât mind that at all!
But then he follows up by saying THAT HEâLL CONTINUE TO WAIT?!
IS THAT CORRECT?!?!?!?!
WATANUKI PLEASE ITâS BEEN SO LONG WE DONâT EVEN KNOW HOW LONG ITâS BEEN. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF WAITING STILL.
IS HE WAITING BECAUSE HE THINKS THERE WILL BE SOMETHING FOR HIM TO MEET STILL? OR HAS HE EFFECTIVELY TRAPPED HIMSELF ETERNALLY?
IS HE UNABLE TO STOP WAITING?Â
WILL HE JUST KEEP WAITING FOREVER? IS HE JUST STUCK ON THE SAME CYCLE NOW THAT HEâS DONE IT FOR SO LONG??
Oh my goodness, I feel like after this revelation it would have been nice to give him the closure and let him finally move on. Thatâs what YUUKO seemed to want for him, to let him finally be free and live his life outside the cage again. But he immediately just gets back inside the cage and says heâs just going to continue sitting here forever.Â
I AM LOSING MY MIND OVER THIS. WATANUKI P L E A S E
Is that it then? Did the obsession win? Did his life BECOME the obsession? Did his entire existence become devoted to an obsession that can never truly be fulfilled in the way he wants it? Has Watanuki become the true âHolicâ after all?
⌠OH ACTUALLY WOULDNâT THAT FIT? WOULDNâT THAT MATCH?
IS SYAORAN WAS TSUBASA (since that was his name) AND WATANUKI IS THE XXXHOLIC (since he is the ultimate holic)?
WOW I HATE IT HERE.
H E L P WE ARE STILL IN THE BUILDING
OK!
OK IS THAT THE FINAL REVEAL THEN? WE FINALLY LEARN WHAT THE EGG WAS?
THE EGG WAS THE OPTION FOR HIM TO FORGET YUUKO?
OH MY GOD ALL THIS TIME AND ITâS STILL HERE. EVERY DOUMEKI DESCENDENT GETS THE EGG AND HANGS OUT WITH WATANUKI IN AN ETERNAL VIGIL TO SEE IF HEâS READY TO FORGET HER.
AND AFTER ALL THESE LIFETIMES EVERY DESCENDANT COMES TO THE SAME CONCLUSION THAT THEY DONâT WANT TO ERASE THAT FOR HIM?
SO THATâS WHAT DOUMEKI WAS WONDERING EVERY SINGLE TIME? IF HE SHOULD ERASE HIS MEMORY OF YUUKO?????Â
EVEN YUUKO HERSELF SET THIS OPTION UP FOR HIM, AWARE THAT HE MIGHT END UP HERE?
SHE KNEW THE WHOLE TIME AND SET UP A WAY FOR THIS NOT TO HAPPEN BUT THEY NEVER USED IT???
Which is NICE in a way, I suppose, that they realised how important it was to him and they didnât want to take that away. And itâs nice that even here the idea is based on agency - they present the Option of forgetting but Watanuki still doesnât want it.Â
Heâs just⌠going to sit in the cage forever. And I guess Doumekiâs living legacy will just continue to hang out with him as he does it.Â
Oh man and I want to know everything about how the Doumeki side of things works as well. How long did Doumeki continue to hang out with Watanuki? At what point did his descendant take over? When did it become A Family Thing and every new Doumeki takes the place of the old one?
How long do they spend with him? Is it like an apprenticeship thing they do while theyâre young and learning the spiritual knowledge or do they continue into adulthood? Do they just do it until thereâs a new person to replace them or are there periods where none of them are available?
ALSO does this mean they are free from this service now too? If Watanuki CAN leave that means he doesnât need them to be his connection to the outside world, he can do that on his own. He doesnât need to send them out on errands if he can go to the store himself, but will he? Are the Doumeki descendants quite happy with this situation and will they just continue it all the same?
⌠OH AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE SEQUEL?
Is xxxHolic Rei set in this future, with Watanuki this far ahead of us in time and living with the Doumeki descendants? I suppose if it is that means he can leave the store and have adventures around the place, which could be fun. Or will we still be set in the present day and basically be having flashbacks of his time with Our Doumeki?Â
Will there even be a Doumeki in the sequel? Surely there must be right?
OH DONâT USE THAT IMAGERY ON ME
HE DIDNâT DO IT! HE DIDNâT FLY AWAY! HEâS SITTING RIGHT THERE IN THE CAGE STILL!
HE NEVER LEFT!
HEâS STILL THERE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh
Anyway what I actually wanted to talk about was that I was reading something completely unrelated this week and stumbled across this translation note:
WHICH
I was familiar with most of, but that final sentence really just hit me with the most unbearable hindsight about the way xxxHolic is the way it is all at once. Especially everything to do with Yuuko.
And I think it also partially explains Watanuki's huge personality shift once he enters the cage arc. His core personality type shifts from being yang-centric (which his boundless energy and enthusiasm, and his Clow Reed ancestry) to yin-centric by necessity, in order to become more in line with the ghosts and spirits that he eventually has more in common with than humans.
And we've known the Syaoran soul is in the shape of a yin-yang symbol for a long time, but now it's fun to really dig into the idea that by the end of both series Lava Lamp lives up to the yang half (actively traveling and searching) while Watanuki changes to himself to embody the yin side (confining himself to one place and becoming cool and considered). So between the two of them they've balanced both halves of their existence.
So I reread Clover!
I think I've mentioned a few times in the past that when I first read Clover I didn't enjoy it very much, if purely because I had gone in expecting something it wasn't actually trying deliver. But that was back at the very beginning of my CLAMP journey, and something like... 14? 15 years ago? Maybe even more? A truly horrifying number of years ago, let's just say.
But now that I'm Post-Tsubasa & xxxHolic I've been desperate to go back and re-experience everything and see how much my opinion has changed of all the other works - and I'm so glad I did! I absolutely LOVED Clover this time around, and I'm extremely thankful that I've kept it carefully on my shelf all these years just in case of such an occasion.
It's so melancholy but so focused on living while you can, finding things worth living for, as well as making hard choices and paying for them, but with those choices still being worth it when they end, even if they did have to end. Even the art style (which I initially bounced off of all those years ago) I find very well considered and evocative this time around. We don't get very many backgrounds because they don't matter in the face of what the smaller panels give us. We get so little grounding in the environment because human life is so detached from nature and the world around it, becoming bleak and less grounded as a result - which only emphasises the importance of finding what you want to live for even in sci fi dystopia.
From a Tsubasa lens I also love that so much of Clover feels like the blueprint for all the ideas that eventually become Fai. Which, we know Clamp put a lot of thought into, because they draw this parallel for us already:
The whole idea of the Clovers living in a cage because of their powers is such a clear line to Fai's own backstory, especially with both Fai and the Clovers being put their out of fear of them being stronger the people in power. And there are even twin Clovers to make it even more direct! As well as age shenanigans, with them all aging much slower than a regular person - AND Ran and Fai both find a gruff warrior who becomes their link to freedom and their eventual lover. (Though admittedly Fai being a visible adult makes this much easier to enjoy, but Clamp have put a lot of effort over the years into exploring nontraditional forms of love, and I don't want to look back several decades and judge them to harshly for some things that didn't age the best)
And to dip into some late-series spoilers for both Tsubasa and Clover, Fai's arc is both an echo and an evolution of the arc the Clovers get. We don't see where Ran's story ends because the magazine publishing Clover went under, but Ran knows that he only has a few years of life outside the cage. In order to leave he had to abandon the person he was closest to, but who was also abusive and legitimately murderous. Even so Ran forced himself to leave and find his own happiness, just like Sue, instead of living in the depressing (but safe, and eternal) trap that other people had built for him. Fai, too, had to abandon Ashura (his only remaining family) in order to escape the murder plans Ashura had in place, and had to continue running to escape the traps waiting for him (and poor Fai had MULTIPLE of these). Like Ran, his time to run is limited, but he throws himself into it all the same, and fights to maintain his freedom.
Also, Fai's arc ends in YET ANOTHER cage.
His ultimate fate would have been to be trapped forever or die in a cage, just like his childhood, and just like the Clovers - but like the Clovers its his ability to love that makes his life worth living, and in Fai's case his love literally saves him from this fate.
Fai COMPLETES the fate of the Clovers AND escapes it, getting to live in the way that Sue and Oruha and Ran never got the chance to. Fai gets to survive, which is still revolutionary for the flavour of arc he has, especially in the hands of CLAMP.
Though he's not the only parallel! I think you could draw some very great parallels between Sakura and Sue - both Sakuras, even, in different ways. Tsubasa Sakura spends the plot in a timeless cage, like Sue, watching events from afar before she finally finds someone to save her. And our clone Sakura is knows her fate and that she will die in order to save someone she cares about, and walks into it willingly. And I think THAT connection is another one that Clamp built deliberately, and let us know it, since this arc for Sakura happens in Infinity - and Infinity is directly coded to look like it's set within Clover. It's probably not meant to be the exact same place, but I actually don't think there's anything that rules it out either. Infinity very much COULD be in Clover's world, set after a point when Sue's cage was abandoned and Eagle Vision taking it for himself.
Either way, like Fai lives out Sue's tragic arc and completes it the same way BUT ALSO survives it, and gets to live out a happier lifetime with the person she loves. Both of them take Clamp's earlier tragic arcs and build on them towards something survivable. There is an intrinsic hope in Tsubasa that way - where the worst tragedies Clamp have written can still happen to you, but you can still survive them, and as long as you are alive, you can strive to live in way that makes it worth it to you.
So, naturally I love the way that Tsubasa and Clover live in the same message, and the former builds on the latter to deliver the message even more thoroughly.
The only thing that makes me pause is that xxxHolic actually ends (and naturally, spoilers for xxxHolic) the opposite way to Clover. For the Clovers, to live outside the cage is the most important thing of all, and for them its worth trading in their longevity to live and love, instead of remaining in stasis forever. And yet, Watanuki walks the same choice backwards and deliberately puts himself inside a cage of his own making, forsaking his personal connections and gaining the lonely longevity that the Clovers saw as a prison. And by the end of xxxHolic Watanuki's cage is opened for him, by the person he was waiting for, and he still chooses to remain in the cage.
Considering how much of the Tsubasa/Clover parallel was clearly intended by Clamp every step of the way, I have to assume Watanuki's inversion of the Clover arc was planned just as deliberately. After all, Watanuki MEETS the mechanical birds from Clover, and birds become his namesake by the end. So, I feel it's definitely on purpose, I just personally don't like it so much. (And your mileage may vary! Please continue to love this if you already do, and I am just kicking my feet and drawing lines back and forth forever)
But all in all, Clover was an absolute blast and I deeply adore Oruha all over again.

xxxHolic 108
Gosh are we really at the second to last chapter? I donât really know how to feel about that, but the art is absolutely gorgeous at least!
As usual we have some of the real and unreal mixing together, which I always enjoy. I like how the different layers of reality interact here - we have the flower pattern on two different layers of clothing, with the leaves coloured differently for each, as well as the pattern continuing on the back of the scroll, climbing up behind him, AND one of his sleeves has the pattern extending directly from one layer of reality into another, in a way we can physically see. The birds do the same thing, looking like they transition from the scroll into the real life background, but the flower on the sleeve looks like it does both simultaneously which is a bit unique.Â
Add in the window behind him shaped both like a halo and a cage, and the top of the frame segmenting into different patterns in a way that leaves the cage âincompleteâ, and we have some wonderful xxxHolic imagery to play with!Â
Oh actually throw in the facts that the birds now also get the added symbolism of being representative of Watanukiâs true name and official signature, which makes them crossing different states of existence even more tied to Watanukiâs story than ever.Â
I also just like that he looks a bit happier here!
But that aside, letâs see how this second to last chapter will go.
Moriarty the Patriot : Chapter 89 Scanlation
Hellooo! This is Stef! After many days of insanity, we present to you the fan translation of chapter 89! We hope you enjoy it to the fullest!

Read the Moriarty The Patriot : Part 2 manga series.
xxxHolic 103 - Part Three!
Here we go with the final part of this chapter!
AND WEâRE AT GRANDMAâS HOUSE!
xxxHolic 103Â - Part One
In which we have the unhappy couple themselves!Â
I was super excited with this one because I thought I actually recognised the flowers for once, but on a closer look I think I might have jumped the gun a bit. I had been thinking a ginkgo tree, which I looked up as living a very long time and trees more suited to holy places rather than peopleâs homes, which seemed to suit Watanuki very well! But I think the petal shapes are slightly wrong - I suppose it could be a weeping sakura tree? Which I think would be very funny for the name alone, but once again I must admit defeat and leave this for anyone who actually knows anything about flowers. (And actually if I google what the colour version of this looks like the flowers are pink and not yellow, so definitely not ginkgo. Possibly the weeping sakura though!)
But that aside, theyâre so unhappy! Doumeki is standing on the ground, since heâs grounded with reality and human life, with one hand on his hip in a way that might almost be relaxed if it werenât similar to how someone would draw an arrow from a quiver. He holds his bow in his other hand (which, again, taller than him) which is another sign that heâs not actually relaxed, since it speaks of him expecting to have to use it. Heâs looking down and to the side, the complete opposite direction to Watanuki, and generally looks like something is weighing on his mind. (Such as whether heâs going to have to exorcise Watanuki or not?)
By contrast Watanuki is up in the tree, completely separated from the ground and instead supported entirely by the branches, one leg hanging in the air, incredibly relaxed and natural up there in a way most humans would not be. Heâs wearing his glasses and holding Yuukoâs pipe, but despite his relaxed post facing toward the left, he himself is looking down toward the right, in the direction of Doumeki -Â and he doesnât look too happy either, also looking quiet and considering. The tree between them ALMOST separates them entirely, but thereâs a little bit of overlap in the very middle, where their clothing overlaps. Itâs a very tiny connection, and one that would disappear in a second if Doumeki moved away. (And the art implies he could. Heâs still standing, and could just walk away, whereas Watanuki is lounging here as if he intends to stay)
They wear the same style of clothing, with Doumeki wearing the darker fabric with the flower pattern only over one arm, while Watanuki has it generously draped over both (matching how Doumeki is only partially connected to the supernatural world, while Watanuki is swimming in it). Doumeki also only has a few loops of bells over his waist, while theyâre draped all over Watanukiâs arms, shoulders, and around an ankle. Also the flowering branches of the tree extend into the fabric on their clothing, in that mix of layers of reality we tend to get, but I think itâs worth noting that the patterns DONâT cross between Watanuki and Doumeki where they meet in the middle. They have no overlap between them.
And lastly, the branches of the tree above hang down around them like the cage the arc is named after.Â
Wonderful! This makes me very sad. : D
Happy New Year's everyone!

GIFT (Tokyo Babylon FanVN) is out!
LINK
This is a short linear story in a form of a VN, taking place on Christmas 1992-1993! It's not as Christmas-y as I wanted but there is a party and gift exchange.
I really wanted to release this before Christmas, so I was rushing - which means I may still fix some things in the future.
Some spoiler-y explanations under the cut:
Piffle Chaos Grand Prix
Youâre tuning back into our final broadcast on the Piffle Chaos Grand Prix! Our most celebrated annual race where everything definitely makes sense - right until it doesnât!
If youâre joining us just now here is Yamazaki-kun to go over the rules.
Yamazaki: The rules for this yearâs race were simple but two-fold; in order to win one member of your team had to come first in the race - but all members of your team must cross the finish line for it to count! If any member of the team is disqualified, then your entire team is out! Just like that! It certainly lends that certain chaotic feel the race is known for, don't you think? I'm sure our viewers agree!
With that in mind, all contestants were divided into teams of six. Was there any logic to who was in which team? We just donât know! There might have been a grand design, or it could have all just been random chance. Thatâs just how it goes in the Piffle Chaos Grand Prix!
And did you know that the word Chaos was invented only two decades ago? Science tells us that it comes from the word Chao, which seems to be some kind of adorable but mysterious creature that came from another world -
Announcer: Thatâs enough of that! Now a word from our sponsor: Piffle Princess Company!
~Piffle Princess Company~
Piffle needs no introduction - you live here after all! But as always, Piffle Princess Company has been delighted to bring this yearâs race to fruition in order to promote our appreciation of women especially. Or at least thatâs the note Iâm getting from Nokoru-san anyway.Â
Rumour has it that our president herself has a preferred candidate this year, and as such all eyes will surely be on - oh! Oh my, the flashing red light on my screen tells me that I possibly wasnât supposed to read that section out loud, so letâs move right along to the segment weâve all been waiting for - the results!
