her phone vibrated with messages from her friends who had been glued to the screen all night. “you must be so proud.” “your man is a champion!” she smiled down at the texts but didn’t reply. instead, her focus stayed on him—her ale—who looked like he belonged in this moment, radiating joy and accomplishment.

when he finally caught her eye from across the pitch, his grin softened into something more personal, more intimate. he motioned for her to come to him, his free hand outstretched.

“ale, i’m gonna get trampled!” she laughed, hesitating as the players’ families and friends swarmed the field.

his eyes softened, the weight of her words settling between them. “good,” he said simply, his hand finding its place on her waist again. “because i don’t want to do any of this without you.”
