Sony PlayStation Magazine Ad (1999)
What would you say are games with good crafting systems? I've not played any that come to mind when I try to think of crafting as an interesting core mechanic.
"APICO" has a bunch of its crafting systems be related to little machines you build, & they get little UI windows with levers and slides and wheels you have to play with. It all feels very tactile without feeling like it's annoying to engage with.
The "Atelier" games are all about making things to use in battles or to sell, and the crafting in those ones are all some manner of puzzle or another. I need to look more into the series and see if there's any of 'em that don't have storylines that make me feel gross, because I do really like the mechanical side of it.
"Fantasy Life" has a bunch of little minigames you play for the various crafting classes you can pick. I don't really remember any specifics, but I remember enjoying it when I played a bit of it years ago.
"Final Fantasy XIV" isn't really about crafting as such, but I think its crafting systems are neat. You use different buffs & manage different debuffs to try and optimize math puzzles.
