The Libertine Patriot! Joyfully, Skillfully Uniting Americans In An Age of Universal Partisan Disillusionment
The following speech was offered by Patrick Kilpatrick as the featured speaker to the Congress of Hollywood Republicans on June 4, 2014 at the Mayflower House in North Hollywood.
Thank you for having me. Whenever I speak before a group such as your selves, I always say a prayer – “Please God let me serve these people.”
How can I serve you, the Congress of Hollywood Republicans?
Often when I speak I write something that day and then at the moment of the engagement I cast the speech aside and veer off into some tangential continent of extemporaneous improvisation. But tonight I think I should read you what I wrote today in the hopes that this may serve you.
What are the roots of my Republicanism?
I define myself as an American. My political involvement has its beginnings firmly spawned in the mire of Californian anti war, anti America, anti military, anti 2nd amendment, anti hunting/fishing. The imbalance and deranged lack of common sense and victimization that was and is (although somewhat more muted and disillusioned now) so prevalent for the past several decades here in sunny Cal was the genesis.
I arrived in California as a New York actor, a writer, a journalist and advertising man inspired more by Neal Cassidy, Hunter Thompson, Ken Kesey, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Tom Wolfe, Thomas McGuane than by any particular political inspiration.
But for me a decade ago, as we waged two wars, the anti American swirl about me was not tolerable. For me “aid and comfort to our enemies” could not go personally unchecked. I observed intensely as a university student the party shambles of the Viet Nam anti war movement as it wrongly ravaged our national will, as Jane Fonda reveled in betraying her country and was not held accountable, betrayals that resulted in the massacre of perhaps millions of South Vietnamese who valiantly fought for freedom against totalitarianism. The defining of America as the great global imperialist, the reviling of our vets as anything but heroic was a deeply insulting challenge  to the historical truth of America requiring a counter balance, personal courage and action on my part, irrespective of professional risk or career consideration. It was happening again as America and American armed forces men and women gave 50 million people the opportunity to vote in Iraq and Afghanistan against a vastly oppressive regime on the one hand and a murderous fundamentalist scourge on the other.
The presentation by our finest directors of Marines as killers of the “blue aboriginal people” and destroyers of the environment at the very moment when they were in fact liberating Fallujah, despite poor political leadership, and rescuing millions in Haiti from natural disaster, was a despicable propaganda excess … the fact that when we were in two conflicts post 9/11, and the only story that another pinnacle of Hollywood directorial prowess could conceive was the depiction of the evil American PR machine manipulating marines as they raised money for war bonds and slept with movie stars, this as we faced in WWII the most vile barbarity imaginable in the aggression of Japan … enough was enough.
The times have indeed evolved. Spielberg, Bruckheimer, Peter Berg, Mark Wahlberg, the Bandito Brothers, Kathryn Bigelow, others have stepped into the cinematic fray. Now … at least somewhat, Hollywood appears to have slightly stabilized its capsizing craft.
Still, the fact that not one Hollywood actor served in either Iraq or Afghanistan remains a shameful indictment of an entertainment culture. The fact that Gary Sinise, Robin Williams, myself and one or two others are the only Hollywood personalities to even go to Iraq or Afghanistan to meet and entertain troops is appalling, a testament to a generational selfishness and a lack of manhood.
I believe that even Democrats are now disillusioned with being simply democrats, shaken with lies and governmental perversion of the tenets of freedom and free enterprise. The IRS, the silver tongued vacuous, economic leadership, the balking on personal  and foreign policy accountability, the lack of basic courage and ideals that fuels the powers that reign, not just the Democratic but both parties. We are all eager to be Americans once more.
So it’s time in California for uniting, time for authentic leadership that gets things done. Of either party. It was always thus in America. It’s time as it always was to be an American. To be a winner without loss of both fundamental democratic and republican virtues and a blossoming of visionary courage.
Most prominent and prevalent influences in my life are the American ideal, the American experiment, the foundation if you will, of America.
The complexities, spectrum values and vision of our historical leaders, Washington, Jefferson, Monroe,  Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Kennedy and Reagan – are and should be our emotional and political guideposts, our life pillars, except that we live in a time when our youth are often conveyed images, not of freedom’s promise, not of self sacrificial leadership born by its own wallet that risks and wages it’s life, honor and passion on freedom … no not this … but instead overwhelming, over reaching of bureaucratic controls, business stifling regulation, irrational slave inducing taxes, deficit spending and anti 2nd amendment nonsense which fosters neither the economy or the environment, that rather than safeguard responsible Americans but in fact strips Americans of  the ability to prosper and defend themselves against fools and abhorrent psychotics, this coupled with slick spin and lack of humor … the exalting of the lack of competitive spirit, a lack of manhood and truly empowered womanhood … instead we receive a Congress that has established itself as an elite oligarchy above the law, an IRS above the standards of decency and legality, a theft mob dedicated to the enslavement of its own people …  a Democratic Controlled Senate and  executive branch self perpetrating, self fattening – ineffectual, non productive save for their own elitism … swirling above the people like booty laden alien craft. Nor is the Republican House without flaws – certainly not -- or even remotely preemptive in vision and courage.
My own father received a Silver Star and Purple Heart at Okinawa in WWII.  The school boy embraced civic, the work and educational ethics of my mother and father, the towering strength of Lincoln and the nobility and acumen of  Lee … the wild courage of the Civil War Custer … the nobility and power of the Civil Rights Movement … all our shared mythology and origins, the rich and flawed perfection of freedom with self sacrificial anti authoritarianism.
There are a lot of paints in the palette of being an American.
How wondrous is our Petri dish that gives birth to all manner of glory and disease.
The sacrifice of our founding warriors, our visionary framers, the tapestry of optimistic life without cynicism or complaint.
Here’s a thought Republicans, my brothers and sisters of America, my joyous human and worldly colleagues … lead as visionary individuals.
Or at minimum follow someone who can lead authentically and get things done … lead or follow as free people and creators … accepting nothing less than the substance of our Constitution, our birthright of common sense and valor -- coupling that with the fun, insight and fashion of the future.
Here’s a thought Republicans and Hollywood:
Wield the swords of bravery and individualism. Fight with the creativity of masters. Daily we define ourselves and make the case to the American people, by the very tools offered us by our craft, our town, our American media.
Be not afraid of the “libertine Patriot” … it is a fine tradition bathed in the exquisitely beautiful spirit of the all souls of America. Jefferson and Franklin were libertine Patriots, steeped as much in the salons of Paris and the Worldly Age of Enlightenment as academic scholars or incandescent revolutionaries.. Bon vivant animals and angels of freedom.  Do you think Jefferson and Franklin considered their glorious inhalation of life as contrary to their spirit as Revolutionaries and Architects of their age?
Stand for something, listen to everything, form the solutions. Surmount the challenges. Â Accept nothing but joy and the mastery of the tools of Hollywood for the purpose of uplifting your fellow Americans and the citizens of the world.
The Republican Party has and continues to lack flash and exuberant courage. It lacks visionary substance.
I am not a conservative in all things. I am a conservative in respect to defense, the security of the nation, economics, freedom’s honor, the spirit of our people, the balancing of the budget, the belief in the drive and success of our people as lights of the world.
I am not a conservative when it becomes an issue of individual freedom. But not a libertine if the libertine values are contrary to personal responsibility and harmful to others.
I am proudly a situational conservative and a situational social libertine just as I am both a hard charging, self sacrificial leader and a conscious, inventive mentor. I do believe culture and law should be formed for the gestation of freedom, not the control of the masses and  maniacs.
Hire Americans. But I believe as a citizen of the world and a producer that I will go where I can to craft my wares economically and righteously while being generous to whatever productive labor pool I swim in.
Support American companies but only if they are honed and competitive with equivalent reasonable costs and not flawed by lard laden unions.
Abolish the IRS – today, tomorrow. It is the instrument of slavery of our people. The IRS conducts itself illegally, contrary to morality, in interest rates, in penalties. The IRS needs to be abolished … it is the single most effective instrument of tyranny. The Republican Party should call for the needed reform and then implement it. That is being a party of the people and an advocate for corporate success as well. Both sides and all win.
Tax all individuals, all corporations by 15 percent, with a national consumption sales tax at 2 per cent.
No unemployment beyond 12 months. If you haven’t succeeded in finding a job or creating one in 12 months, I’m sorry, you are not looking. I have worked for $13 a night, much less an hour, and been grateful for it to the point of tears. All work is noble, those who will not participate, not fling themselves happily to the hand of destiny guiding their lives as labor contributors should feel our social censure.
No welfare without drug testing, including nicotine testing.
Make all drugs legal – another topic certainly for another time. I refer you to my Tumblr post on the topic.
Craft immigration, as all things, in a win-win construction. I refer you also to my Tumblr post on the topic. These things are national obligations and they are work left undone by both parties.
All things are a question of balance … ebb and flow, common sense.
No qualified young person should graduate with $100,000 in student debt. None, zero.
The FBI should be turned loose on welfare fraud, a scourge on the health care system and the American people to the tune of $80 billion dollars a year.
There should be “non democracy” tariffs on goods from China. And any other totalitarian  or dictatorial culture or country.
Yes, a safety net for those truly in need, either mentally or congenitally truly in need.
We have the ability to have a righteous safety net for our culture, particularly if restricted government is required to not spend the pledged resources.
We have the resources for a space program. We need such for our technological competitiveness and our national morality and vision.
In actuality we have very few challenges that true leadership and national vision can not readily surmount.
What we do have is leaders who don’t collect revenue where they should and spend wantonly where they shouldn’t. The answer is not on the backs of the American people by taxing us all into oblivion.
It is all well and good, and thank God for the Republican House for “sort of” – in reality, not, but folding at each occasion —slowing the line on the deficit but that is not nearly enough by half. Superb plans for the solving of budgetary considerations, eradicating the deficit, aiding businesses in putting people to work and spurring entrepreneurial energy with not only reduced governmental intrusive presence but tax free zones, federal tax credits for launching and investing small businesses — educational and vocational cooperatives with major corporations, reducing their taxes aiding the training of work forces so that graduates of any age are easily transitioned into jobs of vital necessity – these things and more should be the call and direction of decent men and women of both parties.
If government can’t offer this frugal and decisive leadership than at minimum get out of the way of those who can and will.
Here’s a thought, is Japan contributing economically to its defense?  Are Mexico, and other responsible countries, paying for the cost of illegal immigration to America? Â
SIMULTANEOUSLY are we offering a visionary response to capture the great energies of these peoples who yearn to participate in our experiment.
Did Egypt move towards democracy over 30 years as we were giving them 2 billion dollars a year?  As Republicans and Democrats, as Americans, we need to be examining every instance of foreign aid, particularly as we borrow 40 cents on the dollar, and we shouldn’t be giving aid to anyone not moving toward true democracy and meaningful reform for their people.
I’m fully aware of geo political realities and also the imperative of us not to assert our form of government on every nation in the world, but morally and productively we should not be fostering totalitarian thugs anywhere on the planet, no matter how much they form a business alliance of questionable ethics with us and our allies. It is not about turning a blind eye to flaws, it is not expecting people or governments to be perfect, but expecting progress.
By the same token, we need to be swift in our support of any genuine liberty movement. We should ask the mutual cooperation of all well meaning governments on the planet in this globally significant endeavor. The end of dictatorship, the skillful eradication of totalitarian and terror systems must be the quest of all decent people and governments worldwide. Â
We should be advocates of minimum wage increase while seeing to the stripping of non competitive union corruption, reforming over reaching regulation as well as swiftly and valiantly opposing corporate and educational pay not tied to real company and true student performance.
We should exercise our power of purchase and make brilliant aesthetic choices.
We must of course participate as individuals, as parents, as citizens in the education and mental health, the creative and occupational well being of our young. Parenting is self sacrificial, as is all true leadership.
Perhaps, we are a maze of contradictions …  as is America, as is California and Los Angeles. I am a conservationist and a hunter and a fisherman.  I buy nothing but organic food because I seek the best even at the expense of other choices and because I do care about the welfare of animals. Are we as Americans not defenders of the innocent?
As Republicans and Americans, as Democrats and Americans, we should decry the cradle to grave cruelty of animals in factory farms. We should be aligned with the halting of such psychosis and with proponents of safe and productive management of our food and water resources.
We as Americans united should stand for organic and nutritional school lunches for our children throughout America. It should be our issue as a people. It matters little that Michelle Obama puts it forth, as Republicans you should rise to join anyone who has a vitally necessary idea.
Years ago we were bringing such sound nutrition to the school systems of Santa Barbara — my sons’ schools — without a dime’s extra cost. It can be done.
I drive a Prius with an Lifetime NRA sticker. That says something. It says I am not in a box of rigid ideas, but seek a fertile ground of passionate freedom. And we should not ALLOW California to strip away our right to defend ourselves literally and constitutionally. We should all be first responders, in governance, citizenry, full participants,, safe guarding the public mental and physical health. It is hardly the province of government or police, of any institution  to do all things for us.
No California Republican should be anything but a champion of Gay marriage because we are the true believers of the equal protection clause of the Constitution.
The Republican Party should sustain and advance Mortgage Tax credits, should eliminate the estate tax and vastly reduce if not eliminate capital gains taxes. The GOP should rise up for financial stewardship as well as ecological and true embracing, encompassing energy vision without compromising free market principles one iota.
It is not an all or nothing world, but a world given to solving many sides of a problem. Yes, there will always be intractable positions but the seeking of positive, productive win win realms is the true calling of all human endeavor.
In short the Republican Party, you, I, need to listen, than lead with vision and classical principles based on the concentric circles of defense of the country, the health and education and prosperity of the American people.
I would address Democrats with the same uniting fervor, to be visionary Americans.  Do not shy from the debate, do not treat your fellow Americans as anything less than patriotic colleagues, do not retreat into intractability. Know fully we all – those who roll up their sleeves and go to visionary work — can nationally ascend and succeed and it is imperative that we Americans do so.Â
Ecology is wedded to productivity, those companies that hope to succeed know that, it’s ecological common sense – just as personal health and biology is married to the purity of food and water.Â
Yes, it is a situational, evolving  endeavor, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to come to the proper course if you arrive with the core values of freedom for every human being on the planet as well as the full boat qualities of leadership,  tried and visionary, tried and true economic policies based on freedom, not handouts.  You should arrive in office as a powerful advocate of the US military and a powerful advocate of the respectful treatment of veterans, arrive with the non arrogant assumption of America as a freedom and economic light of the world.Â
You have to be inventive and fun in your very serious implementation of all this. The Republican Party must be the party of the vanguard. Â Which it is certainly and currently not. Â It has to be an American party, as well as a party for the world. Neither of which it is fully or freshly, a party of bold and secure ideas. Â I know the Tea party and the Republican Party are not racist, not scoundrels, not anything but the rightful heirs to what is true and right in America. Â
Do we boldly forge the future of Los Angeles, of California, America and the world? I am a Sons of the American Revolution, I take evolutionary revolution as our birthright.  Are we of the continuing, evolving Revolution or are we simply to masticate on the pabulum of the past.
I want to applaud you of the LAGOP. Because you are members of a party which embraces debate, which believes in discourse both social and governmental. We must remain so and flourish as such. We must absorb ideas from wherever they come, embrace human capital and energy from the world around us and cherish it as our own, embellish it with insight and inventive flourish. I applaud you because you can be the spear of a great and vitally important movement. The election of 2016 is paramount, defining, captivating in its potential, for Americans of every belief system, for the very world itself.
Just as the cinematic moment in time is ever evolving, the governance moment in time is evolving, flaring like a many hued sunspot.
We need to conceive and produce the great inventions, reap the economic windfall when we export them abroad and serve first our American brothers and sisters, rather than first employing our totalitarian competitors from other nations.
We need to accelerate the pride and truth of American true strength and agility, American created peace and freedom, earned and realized self-esteem via action and hard work. We need to lessen non productive  grip of the Federal and California governments and let patients with their doctors and health professionals decide the best medication for themselves, the best holistic and conventional path to wellness and health, not the DEA, Eric Holder or evasive insurance companies … this while seizing the responsibility for our own health in demanding pure food and water while transforming ourselves by personal accountability of habit.Â
We need to be gloriously inventive in our communities and get out the vote. This election is one of the most important for the preservation of our America. You are the individuals, the creators, the trenders, movers and the shakers; you must be the most informed on political issues. Use your knowledge to educate, to discourse, to listen to and with America. Give each the facts to counter lies and manipulation. If you lead, then your daily victory, our daily gift of freedom, of citizenship, will succeed for you and for your children.
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to speak with you tonight.
My company Uncommon Dialogue Films is currently in post on “Active Shooter” — my directing debut with a very active Indiegogo campaign.
We are in pre production on “G” – a historical re-imagining project concerning the cost and responsibility of liberty.
We have two projects swirling at studio level. I am an actor, screenwriter, director … acting, writing, producing, directing consultant and coach, sportsman and father.
We – UDF — function by service, service to the nation, service to the story, service to audience, service to veterans, service to film, art and media, to entertainment but never at the abdication of our birthright as free and vocal Americans.
I am on an exploration with you. Shall we explore questions and answers.
This speech is over, but yours has just begun.
God Bless you and the United States of America.
