āYouāre a witch.ā His face lights up, it doesnāt matter if heās taking a quick jump in logic forward. It feels like the natural conclusion from every word past the manās lips, because if he can manipulate them, use them, see the power in that, then he doesnāt have another definition for it. Even if he barely understands it. And a short laugh escapes him when he questions it, a finger pointed back at himself. āSame here, my man. I just run in different circles.āĀ
Explaining his own circles isnāt anything heās ever so anxious to jump into, but he has enough questions that it isnāt silent for long. āHow does that work? What kind of magic do you work with that? Just how far does it reach?ā
Theyāre rattled off swiftly, nothing but genuine interest painted on his face. at least until Alejandro answers him, and the smile fades, mouth quirking to the side.Ā
Itās with some quiet disappointment that he goes to hand the book back. He told a man heād try and find him better music, and he canāt help the pressing curiosity whether Justin would like any of the bands tucked away so carefully, so he wants it. No matter what he says about material possessions, his fingers still itch, even if itās not wholly for himself.
He just canāt agree to those terms, and it doesnāt matter that they sound like understandable, practical things. It was a short list of rules binding him to his coven, but loyalty to them came first. And he couldnāt help but think that a deal like that wasnāt one Castor would approve of, a single string that might divide his loyalty when he didnāt know what was on the other end.Ā
āYou need those things, you can ask.ā And he means those words sincerely, because if anything he was always too eager to help. āBut I canāt make open ended deals. Sorry.āĀ
Alejandro laughs, because the words donāt sound like a revelation more than an accusation. He smiles back widely when Niko tells him that heās a witch too and he wonders what kind of circlesĀ this man runs in. What exactly his own powers are. He hadnāt been known for conspiring with other witches, or even enjoying the company of them. But there was always some curiosity when it came to those that practiced in the arcane arts, simply because his own magic was so much different than those heād come across.Ā
There were people who could do divination, some of the things he could do, though those were his expertise. Finding things. But heād yet to come across another person who could manipulate a pathway the way he could. Or the types of things he could do at a crossroad, how far he could see, how far he could reach, where he could project himself.Ā
The questions pour from Niko in a torrent and Alejandro holds up his hands.Ā āWhoa, whoa, my friend,ā he says kindly, chuckling a little at the manās excitement.Ā āI know I am fascinating, but it takes time to explain what I can do,ā he says and while itās boasting, he just stands there with a dopey smile on his face because heās glad to find someone thatās excited about what it is he can do. Someone who seems so curious at it.Ā
āPath magic,ā he explains with a certain confidence.Ā āI can find things along the road, I can sense them. If I sleep at a crossroads, I can dream of other crossroads, far and distant. The other side of the country, hell, maybe the other side of the world. Depends on how far the path goes. And in some cases...ā he tips his head side to side.Ā āIf there is not a path, I can make one. Or I can shorten it or lengthen it.ā He pauses to see if heās lost the other man or not.Ā
Niko hands back the book and Alejandro gives him a wan smile.Ā āI understand, my friend,ā he tells him.Ā āIf you find something you want to trade, something tangible, you are always welcome to try again.āĀ
