I’m the daughter of a sewer and a book-worm, and the sister of the most compassionate boy in the world. I live in New Zealand but I left my heart in Paris, on the steps of the shining Sacré-Coeur. Some of the people I love wear silver bow rings and have tight curls and give fashion advice and rave to rap music and read their Bible and twirl their ponytail and teach me French slang and decorate with feathers and share soft hugs and squeeze my hand tight as the aeroplane takes off. If I love you that will involve bouncing and driving fast and cute texts and long conversations and star-gazing and second-hand book stores and pink wool and Frank Sinatra songs and tears and bottles of champagne and Oscar Wilde quotations and, above all, tender hugs and passionate prayers. Today was a really big day. First hangover, followed by the first little chip in my heart. I know it is you and not me. I know you’re sweet and kind and that it hurt you to let me down. I know we have many many adventures to come and I cannot wait!

I also know that now I need to practice not thinking about you. I need to forget how your voice sounded when you called me ‘little duck’, how you chuckle at me, how you always send another text with a smiley face. I need to forget how much I want to hug you all the time.

That will take a while. I will be a little sad to begin with. And then we will go for many coffees and I will be blindingly happy that we’re such beautiful friends and that you’ve been so nice about the whole thing.
