Three ophthalmologists have been awarded the Nobel Prize so far - Allvar Gullstrand (1911), Fritz Pregl (1923), and Walter Rudolf Hess (1949). Allvar Gullstrand  is the only ophthalmologist who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for work in ophthalmology. Fritz Pregl received the prize for his invention of the method of microanalysis of organic substances.   Walter Rudolf Hess was trained under Otto Haab ( remember the eponym Haab's striae !!) and was a successful private practitioner. He is the one who developed the "Hess screen". He left his private practice and into research under Justus Gaule. He was awarded the Nobel prize in  1949 ‘for his discovery of the functional organization of the interbrain as a coordinator of the activities of the internal organs’. So the Nobel Prizes to Fritz Pregl and Walter Hess were not related to ophthalmology or vision. On the other hand, two Nobel Awards have been given for studies in vision and ophthalmology, but the recipients were not ophthalmologists. They are Ragnar Granit, Haldan Keffer Hartline, and George Wald (1967) ‘for their discoveries concerning the primary physiological and chemical, visual processes in the eye’ and David H. Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel (1981) ‘for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system.’ #ophthalmology #nobelprize #nobelaward
