Li Ma Dogpatch Li Ma’s work consists of fabric mobiles and wall hangings which are made up of many smaller components. Each little motif is an abstracted object from everyday life (combs, beer bottles, trees, laundry hanging on a line) but when she assembles them, they are transformed from second-hand fabric into something celebratory and new. Her most recent installation is inspired by the Banyan trees in her hometown of Fuzhou China—come see it at SOMArts September 3-October 1 as part of the Murphy and Cadogan Award winners’ exhibition. http://malimalimali.com

Lili Ishida

Lili Ishida was nice enough to take time this week to talk about her process even though she literally just moved to the big apple and is still getting adjusted to ‘frying like a noodle in a wok’ as she put it in her email to me. Lili is a really amazing person to see work, she is fresh and keeps her work interesting, I have always been fascinated with her collages, they seem to inform her paintings but also act on their own in a very powerful way, I included two of her paintings near the bottom so you can see how they differ from the collages but are still connected.
