>> BROKEN LADDERS AND HISSING << August 31, 2019 How is the act of questioning expressed and encouraged through artistic practice? How do questions emerge and how do artists process and translate these into tangible forms? For Broken Ladders and Hissing, Para://Site Projects invited six artists—Assi Abogado, Mac Andre Arboleda, Yas Doctor, Adela Ramirez, Aki Rodriguez, and Jan Sunday—to explore questioning as an open-ended process and prompt. Positioned around the space are fragmented pictures, recreated images, ludic installations, and charged materials articulating diverse subjects: the processes of rumination, introspection, communication, familial change, and the instability of identity. Additionally, one might glean a variety of desires—to simplify, organize, control, understand, or derive meaning among others—in the works presented. Yet, with a show probing into the opaque relationship between questioning and artistic production, a single clear interpretation is rendered unproductive as different perspectives continually clash or synthesize, modify or undermine each other, inevitably giving rise to more questions and even fewer answers; recursive, hydra-headed, partial and fugitive. - DOMINIC ZINAMPAN

Fieldnotes exhibition comprises of documented works, installations, performances; re-installed and exhibited at Nomina Nuda in Los Baños - in context of works that were situated within the Makiling Botanic Gardens. FIELDNOTES  September 29, 2018

Curated by Para://Site Projects and Nomina Nuda, this exhibition comprises installations at the Makiling Botanic Gardens that regard naturalist discourse as inherently implicated in cultural regimes, and examine how the regulated space and ecosystems of the facility, similar programs with scientific underpinnings, and other governmental and epistemological forms of containment, have always responded to the interests and values of the day. The participating artists were asked to respond to the national botanic garden as both prompt and site of exhibition, and conceive the said facility along the lines of the so-called nation project and other apparatuses of the State. 

FIELDNOTES is an invitation to view the history, constitution, and persistence of the national botanic garden as inevitably and inextricably political, and consider the intimate affair between natural history and (epistemic) violence, and the entanglement of nature with culture, history, and politics. Little examined save for research and studies in the fields of the life sciences, the national botanic garden is a remanent site of indices—both natural and artificial—to the overdeterminations that have accumulated over the decades, from its conception by the American colonial government, to its development as a public recreation facility during the promulgation of New Society, and down to the present.

Untitled (Book for weeds) (2018)

"Artist-curators Abbey Batocabe and Mariano Batocabe (Para://Site Projects) of group show "Yielding Nodes", informed and regularly reminded participating artists that the farm in Silang, Cavite where the exhibition was to take place would likely experience rain and even in rain’s absence: dew.

I wanted to combine a form and material opposite in their susceptibility to being outdoors and getting wet, with books generally found indoors as objects to care for and handle properly vis-à-vis tarpaulin’s plastic resilience ubiquitous in billboards, store signages, election posters, and reused for such purposes as covers for tables and tricycles. I put together this book to respond to the location’s circumstances, for it to belong in an assigned space. I wanted a book that could be left out in the rain and dew and mud and also found ants and gnats interested in its intrusion.

The images mined from my own pool of photographs were selected for their relation to plants: most were indoor and outdoor snapshots of potted plants, fields of grass, things found in neighborhood bushes, funeral flora, trees tied or cut or layered in beaches and mountains, landscapes and similar environments encountered day-to-day or captured as an ongoing exercise amidst other projects.

That Saturday, I told others about two portraits included: one of my mother, a professor at the UP Institute of Biology specializing in plant molecular genetics, who once walked home from my cousin’s birthday party with a paper flower much larger than her head, and another of Mang Danny, a caretaker at Himlayang Pilipino who tended to my father’s grave for the past 17 years. On Sunday, when we visited for Father's Day, his daughter approached us to say he had passed away the day before, that they needed help with his burial."
