Japanese cyberpunk brand FÖTUS (フェトウス) found its genesis in the 90’s rave scene. Immediately adored by DJ’s and musicians such as Miyavi, Pierrot, and DJ SiSeN, and their fans were quick to follow suit.

The brainchild of self-taught fashion designer Masahiro Saito in 1997, FÖTUS was less of a business venture than an artistic statement. Unsatisfied with the monotony of Japanese fashion trends, Saito strived to create something that stood out, and made people ask questions. “Not to get rich. I only wanted to make something special,” he claimed in an interview in 2003.

Saito made use of polyester, latex, colourful plastic and avant-garde accessories, often centred around neon colours and futuristic concepts. Utilizing unconventional designs and shapes, he transformed neo-futurism and cyberpunk elements into a new look, transmuting the wearer into something almost extra-terrestrial. The name “FÖTUS” is derived from the German word for fetus. As the name suggests, the brand celebrates the birth of something new; the emergence of expectations and hope for the future.

One of the leading promoters of the 90’s, Dreamscape put on legendary raves across the UK, as rave culture evolved into organized events. The first Dreamscape rave was held 6 December 1991 at a warehouse in Milton Keynes, UK— a venue which would eventually become the iconic Sanctuary Music Arena.

The Sanctuary became a key venue in the development of numerous electronic dance music genres. The 12-hour all night events attracted an international audience, playing host to the UK’s biggest dance music promoters of the time, including Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, and Slammin’ Vinyl to name only a few.

Four parties were held at the warehouse from December 1991 to May 1992, which were a massive success, each party selling out in advance. Due to the accomplishments of these parties, the site was purchased, and was re-purposed into a dedicated music venue. The venue reopened December 1992 as The Sanctuary Music Arena.

Released October 6, 1998, by IMC Vision, MODULATIONS is a documentary film which encapsulates the essence of electronic music in its prime. Presenting electronic music as one of the most profound artistic developments of the 20th century, MODULATIONS celebrates the emergence of a new sound via the coalition of man and machine.

MODULATIONS features an array of stunning visuals, live performances, studio footage and interviews accompanied by a soundtrack album comprised of notable faces in the electronica movement. The film features an international miscellany of electronic composers including Moby, Throbbing Gristle, Robert Moog, Orbital, FSOL, and Autechre among more than 60 others.
