   Immediately when he saw his friend approaching, Akira dropped the game and (most) of the attitude, choosing instead to give her a casual wave to let her know he noticed her. But it was a small wave, a cool wave. He had an image to maintain, after all.
   "Letâs start with the mall,â he told the shorter girl after a moment of thought. "We havenât been there yet, and thereâs enough stuff to do in that general area that itâs pretty hard to get bored like the arcade.â
|| ⢠||
That sounded fair. Makoto nodded, falling into step with the other as they began to set off. The mall was a popular hangout spot for people their age; sheâd heard the place mentioned in the school hallways enough times to know that. Though she didnât have the spare time to go too often herself, she supposed she could understand the appeal.
âIsnât it funny?â She pondered aloud, making conversation to pass the time as they headed back toward the train station. âIâm the one who has lived here all my life, and yet youâre the one showing me around.â

      âNiijima-san, are you all right? Wouldnât it be preferable to rest for today?â  Though much had already happened since Yusukeâs own awakening, he still remembers the exhaustion that came afterwards. With everything that was going on with Madarame at the time, he hadnât had much time to rest, though Yusuke is certain that he would have appreciated it. Though he learned that Makoto is one to push herself beyond the realms of what most would consider normal, he canât help but be surprised to see her out and about today.
   âAre you shopping? Allow me to assist you.â

"Oh, Kitagawa-kun--"
A polite, if slightly tight smile settles on her face, the latent sheepishness regarding her recent behaviour towards her now-teammates still lingering in her eyes. She's always been a forceful character when her mind is set on something, but this is the first time in a while that she's had cause to feel any sort of guilt as a repercussion. Still, the artist seemed to be concerned about her... did she really look so tired?
Certainly, she's aware of the exhaustion that has set in since forging her pact with Johanna. It persists even now, a few days later - but Sae would surely notice something if she started sleeping in or otherwise slacking, which left her little choice but to push through.
"Really, I'm only running a few errands, nothing too taxing." Even as she speaks, she nonetheless reanalyses - of all the Thieves, Yusuke was the one she knew the least about. With the others she had Shujin as a point of reference - she knew their academic performance, routines, reputations... and yet Fox remained a mystery. "Only if you're sure you wouldn't mind? I was just going to pick up a few ingredients."

  â  ⌠ MAKOTO  .  â
       Her name is released as a sigh more than it is a call to get her attention, both relieved and weary to see her home at a reasonable hour. Try as she might to the contrary, thereâs a frequent, palpable tension whenever they happen to cross paths â especially seeing as Saeâs opted to eat at the office in recent weeks. She manages a smile, but itâs small and worn-down by hours of staring at her own handwriting.Â
  â  Iâm surprised youâre still awake.  âÂ

She peers up from her notes at the sound of the voice, offering a smile of greeting in return for the tired quirk of her sister's lips. She's taken up office on the kitchen table tonight; since she'd been alone more often than not in the evenings of late, it had been nice to have the change of scenery from her bedroom without the risk of disturbing the elder sibling.
"Hi, Sis." Things had been tense between the sisters since their last clash - more tense than usual, perhaps -Â but Makoto tries not to hold it against her in spite of what was said. "You look tired. Long day?"

Only a select few were a special brand of foolish to divert themselves clear into the path of danger. One such soul happened to make it common place with a particular arrangement settled out the blue. Who wouldâve known, a small running joke when prowling the infested with desire would turn into a full blown regimen. It was a good thing that keeping at the top of their game remained a constant upon their edge of priorities.
Being a significant threat in terms of power level sure held itâs merit. Even surrounding shadows found themselves wary to approach close, enjoying their time aimlessly wandering the endless entanglement of paths that Mementos had to offer. As for the wielder of the Chariot Arcana however? A different life of priority found itself present as he found himself gridlock in a stare down that provoked an intensive form of tension. Just their presence alone exuded a form of danger that spooked more of the careless beast to divert from harmâs way.
Skullâs eyes held a shine of mischief as the opponent whoâd serve as his training buddy for the day. That ignition of glaring hot vitality caused his blood to burn with resolve as he stepped forth, lightly tapping the steel handle of his weapon upon his shoulder. âWell wouldâcha lookâit that. All of âem were nice to clear up ahead of time. If that isnât the presence of the Queen for ya.â It was a clear cut compliment that held two edges of meaning. By all means they could run with their tails between their legs.
As for this spark of rebellion? The last thing on his mind was dive away from this golden opportunity.
âHow youâve had a pretty rough week. Cause youâre one of the last damn people Iâd consider going easy on.â A small flare of that spiritual strength applied by the maleâs hand would cause a sharp kick to the howling wind that drifts by them.

It was important to take advantage of every opportunity to train when it came to the Metaverse. The deeper they went into Mementos, the more formidable the Shadows became - and the more vital it became to keep their skills sharp. Though there was never any shortage of enemies to fight when they explored, sometimes the best way to improve was to face off against someone more human. Sparring with the other Phantom Thieves was endlessly useful, as it highlighted everyone's strengths and weaknesses with combat in a way that the monsters did not.
Perhaps the Shadows had detected that there was going to be something big happening, as they appeared to have retreated far enough to give them some space. Makoto offered a smile of greeting as the Chariot approached, but behind the mask her eyes were as focused and intense as they ever were in the moments before a battle. The duo had fought alongside eachother for a while now, and had sparred in the past, so they each knew the other's technique fairly well. This was an advantage, as it meant that each knew the best way to challenge the other and thus make sure any gaps in their defences were filled in.
"Please. I'd make you regret it if you even considered going easy on me." There were to be no pulled punches here, not on her watch. Gender didn't matter in the Phantom Thieves; the girls hit every bit as hard as the boys, and everyone was treated equally. This was something Makoto immensely appreciated.
A nod, and a shift into a combat stance. "The same as always. I hope you're ready, Skull!"

   The sun crests the cityâs skyline, flashes of orange shining between the maze of towering buildings.  What light does escape the constructs streaks through the student council roomâs windows, painting the space in the orange shades of dusk.  I stand on the left side of the room, my arms crossed, my brow sunken, and my frown shallow.  Across from me sits the illustrious student council president, evidently perplexed as to why Iâd call on her so suddenly.  Unfortunately, sheâs right to be worried.
   Walking to to tableâs edge, I lean my hands atop it as I stare down my fellow thief.  âMakoto, if weâre going to pull this off, we need to do this right.â
   You see, the two of us have hatched something of a scheme.  In the process of helping her come out of her shell, Makoto befriended a nice, if not a little ditzy, girl by the name of Eiko.  Eiko happens to be seeing a host with an absurdly sleazy sleazy air about him called Tsukasa, which Iâm fairly certain is just his latest pseudonym.  Hosts like him work a simple con of roping girls into debt and eventually selling them into prostitution.  Itâs only as transparent as it is sadly effective.  Too many innocent young women have fallen prey to this particular brand of bullshit and neither Makoto nor myself will stand to see Eiko added to the count.  The only problem initially presented was the means to confront her with the truth.
   Thankfully, we have an in.  Back when we first met Eiko, she assumed the two of us were dating, despite Makoto doing her absolute best to inform her otherwise.  As awkward a misunderstanding as that might be, itâs working to our advantage now.  After a number of nights at the bathhouse, Makoto and I are pretending to see each other and using my Debonair Charm to convince Eiko and Tsukasa the act is genuine on my part.  The awful, awful crush I have on her may be making my role a good deal easier to act out, but thatâs neither here nor there.  So long as we can keep this up, we can gather information on the creep and eventually prove to Eiko heâs only using her.  The problem is, pretending weâre dating is proving to be more difficult for one of us.
   âTsukasa isnât going to drop his guard if we donât convince him weâre the real deal.  Weâre not going to be able to get Eiko away from this sleazebag unless we beat him at his own game.  Iâm sorry if this is uncomfortable for you, but I need you to be a better liar.â
   As Queen, sheâs at the top of her game.  Within the Metaverse, Makoto has proven herself an adept Phantom Thief more than capable in both infiltration and combat.  Her keen eye for analysis and organization has saved us more times than I can count.  The real world, however, is a completely different story.
   Charming as she is, social manipulation is not a strength of hers.  In example, her recruitment to the Phantom Thieves was immediately preceded by her being kidnapped and subsequently blackmailed by Kaneshiro after demanding one of his men take her to him.  Repressing the horrifying thoughts of what could have happened to her once more, my mind moves to a far more innocent, but still clumsy attempt at information gathering.  Itâs time we addressed the elephant in the room, or more accurately, the girl with the manga in front of her who thinks sheâs much more stealthy than she is.
   I pull out the seat across from her and slide into it, hoping this conversation might be slightly more comfortable at an evened level.  âListen, I know you were following me around before you joined us.  Your spy game needs work.â  I even tried walking right up and talking to her a few times, but she never admitted what she was up to, even as obvious as it was.  As Phantom Thieves, we need to be as capable of hiding our true intentions in public as we are evading Shadows in the Metaverse.  Makoto is far from the only one of us who needs to learn this lesson, but sheâs the first to which the opportunity has presented itself.  With a straightening of my glasses, I continue, âThatâs why Iâm going to teach you everything I know about deceit.â
|| ⢠||
"Makoto, if we're going to pull this off, we need to do this right."
I hum in agreement, watching my pseudo-boyfriend as he settles into a seat opposite me. It hits me again as I look at him just how fortunate I am that he was willing to go along with such an outlandish scheme. Asking someone to pretend to be your partner... it sounds like the plot of a bad movie. Still, the ends justify the means, and at least we are in agreement that doing this is likely our best chance to rescue Eiko from the horrible fate that's closing tighter around her with each passing day. Honestly, I don't know what I would have done if he'd declined.
Eiko would never believe that Ryuji and I were a couple, and Yusuke, whilst probably intriguing because of his talent, is also likely a little too eccentric to lower Tsukasa's guard. Akira is charming and confident enough to play the part perfectly - and to smooth things over if I say something wrong. Romance isn't really something I have too much experience with, after all. He seems far more comfortable with that kind of thing.
My immediate reaction to his admittance that he'd known my intentions back then is to drop my eyes in embarrassment. He doesn't seem upset about it now, but it must have been so frustrating at the time. In my defense, the pressure laid on by Kobayakawa had really left me with little alternative. It's a feeble argument, I know that, but at the time I had failed to see any other way of getting the evidence I needed. I almost open my mouth to quickly explain that I hadn't enjoyed my time as a thorn in their side, but it probably isn't relevant right at this moment. I make a mental note to reiterate that point later, and refocus my gaze on him.
Deceit... the implications of the word makes the part of me that can't quite let go of the honour student shudder, but he's absolutely right. If we're going to be a convincing couple and expose that Tsukasa for the fraud I'm certain he is, I have to be a better actress. Not to mention that if the Thieves were ever to be discovered because I slipped up, I could never forgive myself. A second or two passes before I give a single, resounding nod, and lean forward in my seat.
"Okay. Teach me."
I will be useful. I will save Eiko from the danger she's in. I will see Tsukasa ejected from my friend's life, whatever it takes. Of course I'm curious to know just how our illustrious leader got so good at lying, but I trust that he will tell me when the time is right.
"What... do you need me to do?"

   Yeah, the rumors⌠well, he had never been labeled as âsomeone with a major criminal recordâ before, but it wasnât as though the experience of walking through the halls while everyone stared at him with their judgmental eyes was new. The difference was that now, it was actual crime they were thinking about, instead of just being an opinionated troublemaker; and now, he wasnât guilty of the things for which he was accused.
   Akira stood by the school gate, waiting for Makoto to arrive. In the meantime, he started playing one of his favorite games, which was âmeet the eyes of people who were staring at him until they got uncomfortable and turned awayâ.
|| ⢠||
Travel from the apartment she shared with her sister to the school took a short while, and by the time she arrived at the gates of the school Akira was already there waiting for her. She offered him a smile and a small wave as he noticed her approach. It was hard not to see the number of people that seemed not to notice how obviously they were staring at him. A short glare at one was enough to get them to disperse.
"Good morning." She greeted pleasantly, clasping her hands at her front. "I appreciate this, you know. So where are you taking me first?"

             The first time he ended up Mementos, he was astounded at how vast the entire dungeon was. This was nothing like the constantly changing floors Tartarus had; hell, most of his excursions with his team there ended up being on foot. There was no way the same thing can be done. Thankfully, not too long ago a good friend of his managed to gift him a motorbike. As one who enjoyed the scenic routes, he almost never manages to use it (preferring to commute instead); after a few modifications though, it was roaring for the Universe Arcanaâs use.
            Minato was about to mount said motorcycle and head off back to his quarters in downtown Tokyo, but the masked individual pretty much stopped him from revving the engine and going on his way. He could sense the tenseness she was exudingâ considering the mystery behind this vast realm, she had every reason to feel such pressure. Her order didnât stop him from pushing the boundary a little further, challenging her with a simple question. âAnd if I do move?â

"Then you'll leave me no choice but to stop you."
He could talk, which meant at least that he was likely a higher-level Shadow, if that was what she was dealing with. She was used to hearing scathing words from cornered Shadows, a last attempt to save their skin - and their Treasure - before she and the others struck. This meant that her reply was near instant, and confident. The Shadows didn't scare her, after all.
"What are you doing here?" They hadn't been expecting to find any targets on this floor, but perhaps it was possible that some could roam around within a certain area, at least partially? That wasn't something she'd come across before, but something about this person felt different to what they had already encountered down here.

"Everyone? No."
Her voice is soft, quietened with concern as she watches him. Something is off, it's clear to see on his face- this is not the charismatic Joker that she knows and respects so much. Thin brows furrow as he speaks up again, and her gaze dips briefly to the floor. He's right, admittedly; being unable to summon her Persona has been more difficult than she expected.
"But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try." She leans in, trying to recapture his eyes. "If people are suffering, it's our duty to try and help."

Coming to a halt, Makoto swiftly dismounted from Johanna and faced the unknown figure head on, watching with sharp eyes from behind the protection of her mask. The sound of another engine echoing throughout Mementos had attracted the Thieves' attention - and since Johanna could move faster than Morgana, it was decided that she should go on ahead and verify the source of the noise. They had yet to encounter anything in this place that was friendly, so the immediate assumption was that things would be similar here. This suspicion showed in her body language; fists curled around spikes, ready to leap into action at the first sign of danger.
Whilst he didn't seem immediately hostile, Queen could take no chances.
"Don't move."

âRight. Letâs go nâ hop to business.â That nature of no-nonsense served as the perfect line of strictness for him to follow by. His thumb could be seen tapping along his throne screen, getting back to the Phansite and off towards the request board. Like a couple of the other request, one in particular had a knife stuck through the notice, a sign that they were on the case. Heâd hover his phone over towards Makoto in order to let her get a solid view on the details. âThis here is what we need to go hawk down.â
âTurns out thatââ A slight pause followed as he worked up his share of effort to keep himself contained. This topic of a name in particular always being a thin sheet of ice for him to travel across. âKamoshidaâs student lapdogs are being pissy since they canât whatever they want anymore. So this guy here, heâs tagged up the notice and is a relative, turns out this person is tilted towards the lines of gang crime in order to keep his crappy dues with feeling powerful all strong.â
âJumpinâ from one crappy thing into somethinâ that much worse..â
âThey have a meetinâ spot just âround the outskirts of Aoyama. Remember those all those party stores that basically turned that street into snack central? Well, ya get where we gotta play private eye. Him and this other guy scouts the place to scoreâ Ryuji summarizes as he tilts his phone back over.
âOnce we get that name. I say itâll be time for us to knock things out the good olâ fashioned way. Looks like youâll have a shot to show that wicked merciless side of yours again.â
|| ⢠||
She scanned diligently over the request as Ryuji described it, her expression stony. There was no excuse for such behaviour, especially if it was simply to fulfil some twisted desire to feel powerful by targeting the weak. Her father would never have tolerated something like this, and neither did she. Now that she was a Phantom Thief, she had the power to really do something about these people - and she was too stubborn to let it go.
Makoto glanced at the blond briefly as he explained, noticing the way in which Kamoshida's mention was handled. She understood the tension there perfectly, having heard about their fight in the months previous. At the time, she had assumed that Ryuji had been at fault - a teacher wouldn't lie, or lay hands on a student for any other reason than self-defense, would they? She knew now that this was wrong. That was another unfair judgement she'd made about a fellow Thief before she even knew them.
All she could do was try and make up for her errors now, and hope that they would forgive her.
"Alright, then," she nodded in understanding as the phone was withdrawn, "let's go." They just needed a name, and they could bring this person to justice. The pair set off down the street once more, looking for their target. A smile that was slightly sheepish, but also slightly proud, threatens to appear at his last comment. "Merciless, hm? Who says they deserve mercy?" It was actually somewhat cathartic, being able to release her frustrations on the Shadows.
As they continued on their way, Makoto looked over at her teammate. "So, Sakamoto-kun - is that how you'd like to be called? I ask because Ann told me she doesn't need honorifics, but I wouldn't want to ignore your preferences."

[ sms: kurusu ] Why not both? Surely there's only so much time a person can spend inside an arcade before they get bored.
Akira had been a pleasant surprise to the Priestess. Based on the original rumours that had circulated the school upon his arrival, she had expected a troublemaker with no regard for those around him - and regrettably, she'd treated him as such. Upon getting to know him, it became clear that this was not the case, and that he was actually quite enjoyable to be around.
[ sms: kurusu ] I'll meet you outside school. Is that alright?

Akira reached over and brushed the back of his fingers against Makotoâs cheek. His touch was sweet, tender, feather light. He was still enthralled by the way such a small gesture was capable of alleviating so much tension and offer so much comfort.
If Makoto had tried to carry the burden herself and entered the Saeâs palace on her own, Akira would have liked to think that he would have noticed. The presidentâs absence from the library would have given it away. Akira was always good at keeping tabs on where his teammates were after school on any given day, should he have needed to make contact with any of them.Â
Makoto would have been behaving no better than she had when she was investigating Kaneshiro: rash and impulsive and with little regard to her own safety. The more distressed she was, the less she relied on other people; it was a bad habit of hers.Â
Queen would have been overwhelmed, alone: outnumbered and at a disadvantage, equipped with only a small arsenal of skills. Her fighting ability was great, and her nuclear spells were always reassuring to have under his command, but Queen was weak to psychic attacks and nowhere near as nimble or covert as Joker or Mona. The only person who stood any chance of solo-running a palace was himself.
âYou wouldnât have had to go alone.âÂ
|| ⢠||
Eyes of deep maroon widened in response to the touch, and Makoto released a short but contented sigh. It was impressive that such a simple action could convey so very much, and offer so much support. Their eyes met, and she offered a slightly sheepish grin in response to the tender yet analytic gaze. Akira always seemed to have this quiet intensity in his eyes - it had been one of the very first things that had drawn him to her. That stare said that he knew exactly what would have happened, had she managed to work out the form of Sae's Palace alone.
"I know that now." She replied softly. It was a bad habit of hers, being rash when emotions were high. It was something that she had been trying to work on since her initiation into the Thieves. With his help, she liked to think that she'd gotten a little better at accepting help instead of rushing ahead when things were tough.
He knew she would have tried to go alone back then, it didn't need to be said. Instead, the Priestess leaned forward, pressing a surprisingly sweet kiss to his lips. With great concentration, she managed not to let embarrassment take over as they parted - this was not the first time they'd shared a kiss, after all.
"I'm just glad that you're safe. All things considered... this is a victory, right?" They still had a long way to go if they were going to get to the bottom of the mystery they had found themselves wrapped up in, but Makoto had faith in their ability to see this through to the very end.
