In our final year of highschool, we went on a 'retreat' (Catholic Highschool thing). Our teacher played 'He ain't heavy, he's my brother' by The Hollies, on guitar. I didn't really get it to be honest.
Today, I'm attending the funeral of a friend who was suffering for a long time with mental illness. And while I sit at the train station to make the journey to the service, I listen to that song, and don't ask me why, but it feels relevant. Maybe it's seeing past my friends mental health problems and knowing it didn't define him. It's what took him, but it wasn't what he was. He was a great, kind, intelligent person, who overcame prejudice. Maybe I'm writing this here out of partial anonimity.
Rest In Peace Anton. You weren't heavy. You were my brother.

if you have an OC (of any kind), you should reply to this with a link to a reference pic. itād be cool to throw them in a drawing if I ever need background characters or something
Draw me like one of your brutal mooses @brutalmoose (idfk how tumblr works anymore i hope im doing this right)

As seen with ketchup @brutalmoose Procreate on the iPad Pro is my jam atm, I seldom do fan art tbh
The time has come, the walrus said, to render the animation.
The home stretch!
Backgrounds are finished, nearly all the rigs are together!
An update! (finally)
Iāve been a bit dormant with working on my flash rigs, so to jazz things up, Iāve started to actually animate one of them in the final project
Upon importing the rig into the master document, I encountered a few problems. One of them being animating.
Because the rig has all the assets embedded in it, the music layer sits on top and makes lip syncing convoluted. Another problem was having the arms and neck move without the mouth/jaw going walkabout.
To combat this, I separated the symbols onto their own layers, and animated/tweened from there. I suppose it worked, the plus side is that I know this for future reference and can built accordingly.
FLASH RIGS
In the past week Iāve begun the progress of creating my Flash puppets, or rigs.
Iāve decided to take immense advantage of Flashās symbol system in terms of animating my main character. Iāve used the system on the arms, mouth and eyes on Mickās rig. All of the layers of each symbol are embedded in one main symbol, and all reside on different layers inside that symbol. The layers are stacked in a fashion for different reasons such as the front arm being in front of the rest of the assets.
After a good few hours,Iām rather satisfied with the end result of this, now only 6 more to go!Ā

26th August: Colour Palette Test
An aspect of my project that I was really nervous about was the colours I used in both my main character and the backgrounds. For this reason, I tested out several different colours for Mick.
I colour picked from several different photos that were pixellated using photoshop. Photos included paintings of 1950s paintings of people, 1920s fashion drawings, and other random photos that I liked the colours in.
Atm Iām most fond of the 3rd palette, as the colours convey that of a pencil pusher, which I see Mick as. The general consensus of others was that the first palette was a bit too out there, and that the middle palette was too modern or bland. Currently I am using the 3rd, however I have the freedom of changing my mind if I choose to.
26th August Update
As I am using Adobe Flash forĀ āLazing On A Sunday Afternoonā, I will be taking advantage of the symbol system that most Flash Animators use, particularly with lip syncing.
While most front on mouths can pass without the jaw moving, a side on mouth requires it to move in order to give the illusion of speaking. This is an example of symbols being used to make lip syncing easier. Unfortunately I do not have access to plug ins such as KeyFrame Caddy, however this process is quite fast when you have been using Flash for nearly 5 years ahaha.
This is a quick test of the technique I will using, hence the scrappy mouth symbols. However, when cleaned up, this will look much more polished. Each symbol is a different phoneme. In the clean up, I will have at least 15 different mouths to use in lip syncing. I can make symbols for both happy and neutral, and even any crazy ones I might like to have Mick make.Ā
A plus side to the symbol system is that I can easily copy Mick into other scenes and recycle theĀ ārigā orĀ āpuppetā. Enjoy!
Are you actually tho @brutalmoose
Update (and also the plot because I completely forgot to mention it lmao)
A second post regarding my production!
So far, I have worked one mostly 3 things
- finished the storyboarding
- made significant progress on the animatic
- nearly gotten a model sheet for the main character, who Iāve named Mick
The progress Iāve made so far puts me somewhat on schedule according to the set production schedule. However as this is early pre production, I am confident in catching back up.
I have realised that I have failed to lay out the plot of my production. 'Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon' is a song by the band Queen on their album 'A Night At The Opera'. The song is an upbeat tale about a man and a week in his life, with him detailing the different events that lead up to the end of his week 'lazing on a Sunday afternoon'. I chose this song because 1. As a one minute song, it is realistic for animation 2. The lyrics enable a narrative to be told 3. My favourite band since I was 12

WEEK ONE - STORYBOARDING
In the first week of my production, I have begun to finalise the storyboards and eventually the animatic, which is captures of the storyboard put together to figure out timing
