A "Time-Portaloo" AU
Who's to say that it was only Kevin who changed his name?
What if when teenagers (maybe 14 or 15), Three of the Four Brave Boys (Edgar, Kevin, and Roland) find A) a time portal whatever, and B) A Fairy, or Fairy object that if used would take away the curses. Price being that it would take away memories of having the curse.
Maybe it's been a really rough month, And maybe recently Monty has been sadly remembering his biological family, the family he killed. And maybe the others have realised that their families aren't that great; even Roland has recognised that no matter how loved he felt with his family, they were pushing him to be a Suffering Martyr.
So they decide to give Monty a gift, to change his past; to take away his curse (before he gets it), so that his family will still be alive.
It is mostly for Monty, but a little bit for themselves. The pain of loosing Poe (and whatever happens with EGG), The Aftermath of whatever Destruction The Voice will cause, and Kevin's own embarrassment that has never quite left him.
They go back in time. Maybe further than intended. Maybe they're disoriented Maybe people think they've been in an accident. They give people fake names.
Kevin starts to say 'Kevin' then changes it to the first other 'K' name he thinks of. "Ke-yle. Yep Kyle is my name."
Roland uses one of his brother's names, as a sibling thing, or just as the first other 'r' name he thinks of - 'Rupert'
And Edgar as the only to have thought of an alias goes with - 'Toby'
(... Unless you want to add in an amnesia twist early, without it being 'take-away-curse-related'. They started to forget straight after time-travelling, remembering some important details but not names.
Kevin and Roland remember what their names start with, Kevin just says yes to the first one offered, Roland waits until he hears a familiar name, Rupert was offered before Roland.
Edgar thought the person said "What's in a name?" And went 'oh we're quoting Shakespeare' and slurred out "To Be or not to be", only he got the first part out and people thought he said his name was Toby.)
But they succeed in taking away Monty's curse (maybe he's an infant at the time). But then they are stuck.

Monty of their time however, figured out that they had time-travelled somewhere, and thinking they were in trouble obviously went after them. Only he got a little lost, and by the time he finds them; Monty is an adult (or maybe his own deal with a fairy had him aged up to being an adult, so he could find his friends).
Maybe on his travels he sees younger versions of his friends and the not great treatments, and decided they all deserved better. Maybe he sees the other him get to grow up without the trauma of loosing his first family.
Anyway he finds the Three, after they have succeeded in ensuring that Monty now will grow up with his family. And they are now all stuck in the past. They still care about Monty whatever his age, and him being an adult actually works as he can be a parental figure to his friends.
Maybe he tells St Churnley's the truth, and they provide some help, legal documents and connections.
They introduce the kind Jones family (Maybe their relatives of one of the stewards) who adopt the now Rupert. Monty takes on the care of the now Kyle, and they choose the last name 'Eggerton' in honour of Poe and EGG.
The now Toby is Toby Allen, because he can easily claim to be probably the product of a one-night stand by either his actual father or his grandfather. Maybe at first he stays with them, but they travel too much for his liking, and he's terrified of being around baby him; paranoid about causing the end of the universe by meeting your past self (which won't happen. but the paranoia is strong). Or maybe he never stays with them, instead switching between being staying with Monty and the Jones's.

They all live, they throw themselves into living. Maybe Kyle tried to be as different to Kevin, while Rupert and Toby throw themselves into being 'ordinary'. Maybe they remember, maybe they don't - Maybe it's all repressed occasionally popping up and not making any sense. Maybe that's why Kevin started drinking.
They go to school, and meet and become friends with Lucy. She and Rupert date (*which does put a damper on my sort of shipping Roland with Kevin; although I do prefer all 4 being Platonic, but maybe Roland/Rupert could be Bi).
And life happens up until the story of the STAG.
Which of course makes everything a tragedy for Edgar/Toby ... But at least he'd get to be with Poe again (and whatever happened to EGG in this AU).
But Monty at least I think would be happy. Sure he'd miss his friends being his age, but he is such a protector, and wants to protect his new family. And I think he'd do a good job.

How i say goodbye to my moots
I see a lot of people online saying that Orpheus (Hadestown specifically) looks back because he loves Eurydice so much, that there isn't a world in which he doesn't look back, because the kind of man who wouldn't look back is not the kind of man who would go after her in the first place, etc. It's inevitable because of the strength of his love. But I don't see that as being the whole picture. Textually, it is explicitly his doubt in himself, and in the narrative of his life, that makes him look back: "Doubt Comes In", and he wonders, who is he that Hades would let him win? Who is he that Eurydice would follow him through the dark? Orpheus used to have a very simple, naive view of the world and his place in it. He was single-minded. At the beginning he tells Eurydice he's the man who is going to marry her because...well, that's how the story should go, and he is a poet first and foremost. Then, when he meets Hades, he is confronted by what Eurydice did and what the world is really like. He is shattered by the realisation that Eurydice wasn't just a simple, "pure" victim, but that she signed her life away. He is beaten down and loses faith, he goes into "Is this how it is?" after he's literally already done the impossible by reaching Hadestown on foot. He should have proven his abilities to himself by this point, but things aren't going the way they are supposed to and he doesn't know who he is anymore. He isn't just a boy in love with a girl who sings a song to bring back spring: he's a boy who didn't look back when he should have the first time when she called his name; she's a girl who chose her immediate needs over his grand ideals. His faith in a world where they make it back together is broken. He looks back because he doesn't trust himself or the narrative that he's found himself in. It's even more heartbreaking to me, because the Orpheus he was at the beginning of the musical might not have looked back, but that version of Orpheus doesn't make it out of the Underworld.
And to top it all off, the version of Eurydice from the beginning of the musical, before love softened her hard edges and made her trust him, probably wouldn't have followed Orpheus out of Hadestown. Eurydice really does trust him to get her out, because she's looking for the Orpheus she used to know and she's seen the power of his song and worldview.
Am I rambling into the void or does this make sense to anyone else?
