I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;

The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.

So how is it that second-hand embarrassment is the single most powerful and weakening emotion one can feel from media?

One of my first impressions of tumblr was taiko no tatsujin fanart of the two drums who are brothers and they were together banging (haha get it because drums) I still don’t know if the creator didn’t know they were brothers or if they didn’t care, but either way that stuff wasn’t tagged. You are aware that a fictional character is just a rhetorical construct designed to fulfill a narrative/thematic purpose right? That their actions are written by an author who wants to use them to explore complex ideas and moral gray areas within the safe confines of fiction right? That they aren't a real person who has killed real people right?

HOWEVER. You have to be aware that this doesn’t excuse stuff like supporting racism “because it’s just a character.” As a person of color, stereotypical characters have actual impact on people like me. They spread ideas. And same can go for things like using characters to spread ideas such as abuse and misogyny being okay. But also this doesn’t mean these should be censored or anything. Just that we need to have media literacy. It’s a complex topic and I’m tired idk if this makes sense

Basically fiction can spread bigoted ideas and that shouldn’t be ignored just because it’s fiction

I think the scariest dream I’ve had was when I dreamed (nightmared) that my mutual was reblogging proship discourse shit to the point I had to block them. Scary because it could potentially happen. I woke up and told them about this but I haven’t stopped thinking about it even though it was a while back
