Because on one hand, he'll feel better in a twisted way about Jason's demise, but on the other hand he'll feel so so so much worse. Because not only did he look up to Jason as a father figure (when his and Nat's own parents were probably nonexistent or abusive idrk if it's confirmed in the book but that's what it seemed like to me) but Jason literally used him as an unknowing pawn in the police force to help him with gathering intel and getting away with more murders. How do you recover from finding out something like that, genuinely.
I like to think that Dan and Nat's relationship as siblings eventually strengthened a lot after the events of the third book and during Pip's exile at university. They became a lot closer and Dan became more aware of Nat's own trauma and hurt that he'd been neglecting for his own and Jason's validation. Here's hoping that he actually also ends up as a good dad for his kid. Vicious family cycles don't need more cycling.
edit: I'm also hijacking this post to talk a bit about Flora and Charlie. I think Flora pursued a teacher's degree in school, and she was also mainly a theater kid who was good at voice acting and improv (and loved musicals). Meanwhile Charlie learned a bunch of semi-disparate skills like coding, graphic design, and photo/video manipulation so he can work a variety of (mostly online, mostly flexible hours) jobs to start earning a steady income while homeless, although once they met he mostly stayed over at Flora's place in the night until they bought their own place together. They got married pretty fast after that. Flora probably ended up dropping out of college for him, or maybe she completed her degree. I think Flora before Charlie was a rather bubbly, friendly girl with deep opinions on things and a bleeding heart, and she met Charlie at a very brooding, dark-eyed byronic time of his life. They're doomed your honor <3
Will I do more of these in the future? Hopefully yes, I have a storyboard in my notes for another scarian fic and the notes for my dnd campaign comic, so look forward to that (it’ll probably take a while tho, cuz uni)

What I enjoy most about the Great Divide is how complicated it let's itself be. It's about a man who got famous from writing about the sadness of his upbringing, his town and the people in it. He commodified his trauma and made enough money of it to be able to leave. And yet leaving doesn't save him, the opposite. He misses his community so dearly, he wants the best for them, but it can never be the same again and it also isn't the same anywhere else. Staying or leaving, it's a push and pull and none of it will ever feel right and that's the divide he will have to live with for the rest of his life.
Doors by Noah Kahan is the most six of crows song ever, each crow is represented perfectly in the lyrics and I think of them every time I listen.

This is Inej taking to Kaz. She is showing him the way to her but he, for once, is unable to open the door. And then she disappears like she always does.

This line is Nina. She’s full of life and light and energy, and she loves so whole-heartedly that her vulnerabilities can easily be turned against her. Such as Kaz using Matthias’ freedom to get her to do the Ice Court heist. Nina also uses Matthias’ vulnerabilities against him when they first reunite and are on the offensive with one another.
“I’m the trouble ahead and I scream in my sleep”
I think this line from the chorus works really well for each crow’s POV because of their individual traumas and awareness of their baggage.
In conclusion this beautiful, devastating song about wanting love and connection but not believing you’re worthy of it is the perfect representation for the traumatised, aching teenagers of Six of Crows. Thank you.

I mean it’s kinda the real life tragedy of love exaggerated, innit? Irl people die young or one person dies old and another person dies even older. At the end of it all someone gets left behind and has to learn how to move on after that. And for the one who dies you know you’re leaving them behind. You know you’re dooming them to moving on and if you believe in an afterlife god only knows how long you’ll be waiting for them on the other side. The tragedy of the immortal loving the mortal takes those feelings we all know about and rips your heart out about it.
