If you've played video games at any point over the past 30 years, chances are you've heard her music: Katamari Damacy, Ridge Racer Type 4, Klonoa, and most recently the 60-track score for to a T. Her career has quietly followed one instinct: pushing back against what game music is supposed to sound like. We talk about how a junior composer at Namco found ways to surprise her seniors, the childhood pressure that shaped her sound without her realizing it, and what it was like to score a game with no brief at all. We also get into a moment in our conversation where she discovers something about herself in real time. It was a true honor to have this conversation with Asuka-san, and I hope you'll enjoy it too!
