Beneath his facade, he likely cannot experience genuine human (or alien) connection and intimacy.
He is more on the high-functioning side of ASPD, since he has the cognitive and social skills to hide his antisocial traits in order to succeed in society. He isn’t chaotic nor impulsive, he uses his intelligence to maintain a position of power
He knows how to play the part of a lovely gentleman in order to gain trust and status, he doesn’t lash out, and we know he is able to keep jobs for a long time (I think it’s obviously implied that he is a lawyer, personally I think he might be a prosecutor because he doesn’t have a badge IF WE’RE FOLLOWING ACE ATTORNEY CONVENTIONS)
If he can maintain a high-class and respectable reputation while having sadistic urges, it can be assumed that he knows how to control and hide them well
Since he grew up in a high-class environment, he naturally already acts polished, meaning he has the resources and charm to manipulate others using his social status.
Not only that, but if cahaya were to tell people about what elias did to him, they’d probably have a hard time believing it because of the reputation he has built for himself
When it comes to actual ASPD criteria, he exhibits symptoms like deceitfulness (acting superficially charming to manipulate others for personal gain), a lack of remorse (an important part of ASPD is a profound lack of guilt or remorse after hurting others), childhood conduct issues (He has shown these symptoms before what is probably the equivalent of 15 human years in lumierans), irritable or aggressive temperaments (he is normally polite but he drops the mask when alone with people he intends on hurting), and entitlement/ego (His egotistical nature that’s stated in the wiki)
Something I initially thought was “Does elias have NPD?” It’s not a farfetched question at all. On the surface, it would appear like he does, but I actually disagree with that notion. Although he does display some narcissistic traits, the issue lies in the nature of his motivation and self-control.
People with NPD usually need constant external validation, praise, and admiration (this is called a supply) to maintain their fragile self-esteem. However, elias is very self-contained. Although he does have a high status, his main focus is tormenting cahaya, and it’s something he does in private. He derives satisfaction from the destruction itself, which is more indicative of sadism or ASPD than NPD.
NPD usually involves a fragile ego: When a narcissist is criticized, they often experience rage or a total emotional collapse. Although elias might have a fragile ego, it doesn’t appear to be *this* fragile. His hatred towards cahaya doesn’t seem to stem from cahaya hurting his feelings or his ego (although it could be), but rather from a desire to see someone suffer.
A narcissist wants to be the best person in the room. Given Elias’ love for sirius and her rule, it doesn’t seem like he has much of a god complex or desire to be the “best.” The logic of someone with NPD would go more like this: “I am better than everyone, and they must acknowledge it.” However, elias’ logic is closer to something like “I want to watch people break.” which aligns more with ASPD than it does NPD. That shift from self-promotion to active destruction is what moves him out of the realm of pure narcissism into either malignant narcissism or ASPD. Keep in mind that malignant narcissism is not a real DSM-5 disorder and is theoretical, so I consider it out of the question.
Elias’ goal isn’t being admired, it’s power and inflicting pain on others. That is why NPD isn’t possible for him.
Another thing to consider is that people with NPD use grandiosity as a defense mechanism for deep-seated insecurity. In his case, his high-class status and ego seem genuine and earned. He doesn’t appear to be “faking” his importance to cover up a feeling of worthlessness (before you mention that curiouscat response from pyo, that is about his depression and feelings of emptiness, not worthlessness). He simply believes he is superior because he was raised as an elite lumieran. If there is no underlying insecurity, it technically doesn’t meet the clinical definition of NPD
And lastly: Standard NPD involves hurting people accidentally or through negligence because the narcissist is only thinking of themselves. Elias’ cruelty is intentional and calculated. You can’t accidentally rip off someone’s wings, now can you? Deliberate, targeted malice is a red flag that points more towards ASPD than NPD.
