Wow, here’s a locomotive I wasn’t expecting to see. This is Vulcan Iron Works of San Francisco serial number 4, built in 1864. She operated on the Los Angeles and San Pedro railroad until it was bought by the Southern Pacific in 1873. Note that she sports a cow catcher on the rear of her tender, indicating that she regularly operated while traveling backwards.

Chicago Railroad Fair

The birthplace of “Little Buttercup” a 0-4-0T switching locomotive owned by the A.T.S.F. that was “aged” specifically to fit in with the other old timers on display at this railroad fair. Changes included removing her saddle tank, giving her a tender, putting a box around her headlight, putting a balloon on her stack, giving her a cow catcher, and giving her an “old timey” paint job. She is currently on display inside of the Trolley Barn in History Park, and is maintained by the California Trolley and Railroad Corporation.

Baldwin built F-4 ″Decapod” Class 2-10-2 #3709
Southern Pacific Train #97, the Noon Daylight, at San Luis Obispo, California in August, 1941. The train is picking up helper locomotive #3709 for the Cuesta grade. While she waits, #4442 (brand new at the time of the photo) will be grease-gunned and take water.
At the time San Luis Obispo was one of the most important en route locomotive servicing points in the United States.

Standard Brands (SBIX) Vinegar tank cars had long lives, surviving into the late 1960s. The entire tank was made of wood, which was unusual for cars past 1900, but the nature of the vinegar dictated it be the case.

A picture of 2472, much as she would have looked like carrying railfans for a steam excursion in the late 1950′s. The red front numberplate and the white walled wheels were a special treatment for SP locomotives, and were only carried in special circumstances.

One of the very early shots of Dixiana after her restoration in the early 1960′s (doesn’t even have her name yet). She had a very nice pilot made for her by the restoration crew, making her look a lot like the Shay locomotives owned by the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railroad. However the crew soon figured out why Shays were not commonly fitted with cow catchers because it was smashed off when the locomotive ran into some of the work cars a few weeks after it was attached.
The Oakland Long Wharf, later known as the Oakland Pier or the SP Mole, was a massive railroad wharf and ferry pier along the east shore of San Francisco Bay, in Oakland, California. It was located at the foot of Seventh Street in West Oakland.
It was demolished in the 1960s to make way for an expansion of the growing container ship facilities of the Port of Oakland. The only structure that remains of the Oakland Long Wharf is the SP Mole’s switchman’s tower, which was restored and moved to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park.
