I occasionally get the urge to distance myself from my womanhood. To frame myself as disaffected or different. I think about playing with pronouns or adding "demi" in front... But I never do. I'm strange, I come from an unusual place, was raised in unusual circumstances. I think that creates an impulse to frame myself as somehow not exactly a woman. As if I'm something more complicated. As if the word is too limiting to encompass the totality of what I am. But it's not. It's just a descriptor. I'm a complicated mess of traumas, I'm my father's kid, I'm a performer, I'm feminine and masculine and a genius and an idiot. But at its most fundamental I'm a woman. It's a simple descriptor to come home to, but a whole one. No further qualifiers needed. I don't really mind being seen as feminine or masculine as long as I'm seen as a woman. I don't really mind being a genius or an idiot as long as I'm a woman. I can roll out of bed, go to the mirror in a bra and panties, brush aside my shaggy mane, and just see a woman, and in that moment I feel like myself. Everything else is just set dressing. There's comfort in that kind of simplicity.

Not socialist in a “I won’t have to work” type of way but socialist in a “I’ll still be working but I won’t be worried I won’t make the rent” type of way. In a “billions won’t be hoarded by one person” type of way.
