-Getting a puppy and training it seems like a good idea, but it isn’t. It could grow up and not be the type of dog that is fit to be a service dog.

-I know it is tempting to get a very pretty dog that is already trained rather than a regular Labrador, but you will be stopped more and more if you have a “pretty” dog. If you cannot deal with that, than I suggest just going with a Labrador.

-You can get a dog to train from a shelter, BUT it is very rare to find one fit to be an SD. I got my dog from the humane society, but he was very mellow and well trained. He is quick to learn. Many shelter dogs get excited easily and have a hard time learning.

-An SD can be any breed, BUT if you are self training and it is your first time I’d go with the stereotypical service dog breeds. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Poodles, etc.

-KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. Business owners and public schools are only allowed to ask if it is a service dog and what it is for. Nothing else.

-Interfering with a service dog working is a class three felony. Remind this to people who interfere.

-check local laws. Not all states and countries recognize psychiatric service dogs.

-therapy/emotional support animals do not count as service dogs and do not hold the same rights

-in many states Service Dogs in training hold the same rights as fully trained service dogs.

-teach basic tricks before getting into service dog tasks.

-only dogs count as service animals, but in some states a miniature horse also counts.

-I was followed around by an employee because she liked my dog

-my dog was giving push therapy and a lady full on stopped and said very loudly, “Well you’re pretty, aren’t you?” Which distracted him and made him stop

-had an employee strike up a conversation about my dog, he then notified two other employees who also tried to start a conversation

- !! A kid asked his mom what my dog was and she explained to him that he is a service dog and they shouldn’t bother him when he’s working !! He said hi to me later and it was rlly cute

-My dog was laying down and another EMPLOYEE said, “you’re tired, huh?” Which distracted him AGAIN and I actually had to hold him back.
