Overwatch Competitive Resources

It’s important to play assertively rather than passively! Don’t just sit on point once you’ve taken it or when you’re defending it. Push up and take space from the enemy team! Too many times I’ve seen a Moira or off tank just sitting on point while the rest of the team engages in a 5v6. Push up and help your team! Do not just sit on point waiting for the enemy to arrive. 

Heyo. With the rise of bunker I wanted to break down the counter comp. Quad DPS ball. (Is there an actual name for it yet?) Besides countering bunker this comp can also be useful for those games where everyone locks in DPS. Four DPS, one tank, and one support may seem like madness, but it’s a credible comp and it’s highly effective. Gonna break it down in a long post below!

Baptiste Buff:

It’s a simple buff. I’m not sure we’ll be seeing much of him outside of bunker and niche players yet though. The ult change is more valuable than the extra two shots though. It might make or break some team fights in bunker compositions.

Dva Nerf:

I love this. Glad she’s getting nerfed. Maybe this can revive Tracer a little but I heftily doubt it. Just good overall though in my opinion. I don’t think it’ll change the pick rate too much? She’s still the best peel tank. Matrix changes will be big for goats though. Indirect buff to everyone with projectile ults and abilities.

McCree Buff:

Huge buff. Even if its not as strong as originally on the PTR. Before, McCree was on the lower end for quality picks. Now he’s back up. Still needs good heals though.

Orisa Buff: 

She’s already in a good place, this will put her in a better one.

Symmetra Buff:

Will be better for those ‘tp straight to point’ strats. 

Torbjorn Nerf: 

Warranted. Don’t know exactly how much it’ll change though. He can still melt tanks. 

Assault Map Changes:

Good quality changes. No more seven minute holds. D:

Baptiste is insanely good at helping his DPS win sniper duels. Here are three specific ‘cheat’ spots you can use even if you aren’t actually going to play Baptiste. These are three immortality field spots that you can reach quickly and help your snipers look for initial picks right as the game starts.

There are other spots you can use of course, but these three specifically stand out because even if you aren’t going to actually play Baptiste, you can quickly reach the spot, set up the field so your sniper can’t die, wait a couple seconds, and then switch to whatever support you want to play (or stay Bap).

Quick Reminder: Bap’s field is line of sight, this means that if there is a wall/corner between you and the center part of the field (lamp, frisbee, disc, etc) then you are not immortal even if you are within it’s boundary. 

Kings Row Attack

This is a no-brainer peek. If one of your teammates decides to look for a pick from here as the game starts just throw your immortality field against the wall. Then they are safe from dying (for a little bit). Just don’t throw it in front of the window itself!

Junkertown Attack

If one of your teammates decides to start up here you can set up another immortality spot. Don’t set it up along the wall (red x) because it’s easy to lose line of sight with the field. Just set it up right inside, where the enemies can’t shoot it down and your teammates can shoot safely.

Rialto Attack

This one would be the least common “out of spawn” fields, simply cause starting there is less common and it’s a farther trip from spawn. You can use the wall, or place it behind the edge of the left building (blue checkmark) so that your teammates still get the protection and the enemy can’t shoot it down. 

These might be simple strategies, but these can immediately start to sway a game and give your team the edge when it comes to opening picks. Even if I’m playing Ana, Zen, or another support, I always consider my snipers on these maps first. If I can help them get an opening pick I will always swap to Bap and then swap off. It’s all the little things that add up to wins. 

Hopefully this gives you some ideas about creative field usages. 

I’m 8 wins from GM T^T. Hopefully my games go well today. In other news I’m debating on making a ‘tier list’ for overwatch. I don’t really want to make it/call it that because you can climb with any hero (esp in low elo) and I don’t want to drive the point that some heroes are ‘crap.’ like there’s a time and place for every hero, and every pick can definitely do well. But there are absolutely some heroes that are in a better state than others right now/heroes that I would always pick over others in the same class. 

So I MIGHT make a list of sorts?? I don’t know. Just thinking about it. Also I’m going to start consistently making posts about the patches to give my thoughts on them.

I also want to make more gamesense posts. Not just mechanics and mapsense. I want to talk about assertive playstyles, mindset/mind games stuff, maybe the key parts of gamesense/aimsense/mapsense, etc.

Use Micro Missiles?

When you’re focusing a target down.

When you want to deal some easy damage.

Use Boosters?

When you need to peel for the backline.

When you want to boop an enemy away from an ally or off an edge.

When you’re diving with your Winston/Hammond.

When you’re stalling point. (Boost and spin).

When you want to peel for an enemy Doomfist specifically. (Boop him away + matrix!)

When you want to avoid an enemy Earthshatter (fly straight up).

When you want to make space.

Use Defense Matrix?

When an enemy McCree uses high noon. 

When the enemy Zarya is getting super aggressive. (Grav)

When a teammate gets hooked.

When the enemy Mei is lining up her icicle.

When you want your Widow/Ashe to win a 1v1 (matrix your ally).

When your allies need help crossing a choke (matrix them across).

When the enemy Mei uses her blizzard.

When the enemy Rein throws in a firestrike.

When the enemy Moira tosses in an orb.

When the enemy Roadhog uses whole hog. 

When the enemy Ana tosses in a nade/sleep.

When the enemy Torbjorn is using his molten core.

When the enemy Tracer is looking for a pulse bomb.

When the enemy Soldier uses attack visor.

When the enemy Hanzo uses dragonstrike.

When the enemy Pharah uses barrage.

When the enemy Reaper uses deathblossom.

When the enemy Ashe tosses a dynamite. 

When the enemy team has an ability or ult that you can eat.

When you’re diving with your Winston/Hammond.

When you need to peel for an ally.

Use Self Destruct?

When you want to zone off an area.

When you have a good angle to get a sneaky kill. 

When you’re going to combo with a Zarya grav.

When you’re going to combo with a Sombra EMP.

When the enemy Zarya has no bubbles.

When you’re going to combo with a Rein earthshatter.

When the enemy team is in an area with not a lot of cover.

When you’re low health and you need to remech quickly.

When there’s a Pharah/Pharmercy you want out of the sky.

When the enemy shields are down.

When you’re stalling in overtime.

When your team is there to fight with you.

Supports! You are not healers, you are supports! If you are only healing your team then that is the bare minimum. Look to make plays! Look for a big anti, a game winning sleep, a vital boop, a quick kill on a squishy flanker, a flighty pistol whip on a Widow, and more. Play aggressive and assertive when you can rather than reactive. Play smart!

Use Chain Hook?

When you want to deal some nice damage/kill a target. 

When your Orisa uses her pull above a shield.

When the enemy Orisa isn’t fortified.

When the enemy McCree uses high noon.

When the enemy Moira uses coalescence.

When the enemy Roadhog uses whole hog.

When the enemy Mercy is rezzing.

When the enemy Reaper is using death blossom. 

When the enemy Reinhardt is charging. 

When the enemy Pharah is using barrage.

When a Lucio is in the middle of dropping beat. 

When the enemy Dva is remeching. 

When the enemy Hammond is about to slam or drop mines.

When there is another interruptible ability or ultimate on the enemy team. 

When you want to hook Bob away from your teammates. 

When you want to cc an enemy away from their team.

When you want to hook someone off the edge.

Take A Breather?

When you’re low on health or taking a lot of damage. (Turn away as you take a breather so you don’t get headshot!)

When your supports already have their ults (you can give them ult charge.)

When you’re anti’d but not super low.

Right before you whole hog (if you’re low).

When you need to body block for a teammate.

When you want to body block an enemy.

When you can’t escape a Dva bomb.

When you’re trying to cross through choke and you’re taking a lot of damage.

When the enemy Genji tries to dragonblade you.

When you’re caught in a Zarya grav.

When you’re caught in a Hammond ult or you want to get rid of some Hammond mines.

When an enemy riptire is coming for you.

When the enemy Brig is not near you.

When the enemy McCree is not near you.

When the enemy Hog does not have hook.

When the enemy Sombra doesn’t have hack or EMP.

Use Primary Fire? (Left Click)

When you want to deal a ton of damage at a close range. 

When you’re up close and personal with enemy tanks.

When you want to combo with your hook. (Hook + Shot + Melee) 

Use Secondary Fire? (Right Click)

When you want to deal damage at a farther range. 

When you want to spam choke. 

When you want to help break shield.

Use Whole Hog?

When the enemy Genji dragonblades (force him away)

When you want to keep the enemy team off the point/payload.

When the enemy team is against a wall or at the edge of a drop.

When your Baptiste has put down a good amplification matrix.

When the enemy McCree doesn’t have flash.

When the enemy Brig doesn’t have shield bash.

When the enemy Hog doesn’t have hook.

When the enemy Sombra doesn’t have hack or EMP.

When the enemy Rein doesn’t have earthshatter.

When you aren't extremely low on health.

When your supports are there to keep you alive.
