In War and Peace, a film lasting three and a half hours, calling on the services of six scriptwriters, nearly 5,000 guns, as many rifles, 7,000 authentic costumes, 100,000 buttons, and tons of artificial snow flown in from England, Audrey found herself engaged to a prince, seduced by a count, and pursued hopelessly by a Henry Fonda resembling a spaniel in rimless glasses. While Audrey and Hank won almost universal approval from the critics, and while the spectacle itself sensitively re-created quite a bit of the mood and philosophy of Leo Tolstoy’s 650,000 word classic, the film as a whole was not a success financially, despite the critics’ lavish praise. One critic, noting that every minute brimmed over with love and hate, life and death, blood and sweat, perhaps spoke for many movie-goers when he concluded that in the film there was too much peace, too little war.
