i always love the concept of twins being opposites, yet complimentary in a way, as in they are matching thematically, aesthetically etc.
i've always seen the Dreamtale AU as like, a semi-medieval fantasy kind of universe, and i wanted that reflected in the twins by the way they dress, behave, speak etc. so i kinda see them both as rather formal in terms of speech, Nightmare more so than Dream. their clothes also tend to be more medieval/fantasy-ish, but branch out in different directions of stylization. because of how they grew up, i see them as going around largely barefoot, considering not a lot can harm them, but also it would be interesting to underline their unusual origins and customs. i don't consider them complete gods (unlike Ink and Error) but i do think they stray closer to being god-like, or even being some sort of demi-gods – not completely immortal, but also not unable to not die. thinking about that, i kinda got sucked into looking at some greek mythology and came across the xenia, the ancient greek concept of hospitality, and thought it fitting for the twins to adhere by it.
now, some individual concepts and ideas of the twins; love the idea of Nightmare inhabiting a castle (especially semi-sentient but that's for another post maybe) and reigning in it like some Dark King or whatever, and the sense of royalty is reflected in him; his clothes tend to be more embellished and made of finer materials, his speech is very refined (never uses contractions), his tastes are more elevated (and expensive) such as preferring antique furniture and being a big appreciator in the arts. he's very bookish, so you bet that guy has a huge library and with his enormous lifespan, i love the concept of him having singlehandedly filled that library. i'm talking floor to ceiling dark wood shelves, the ones you need tho funky sliding ladders for. considering he's been around for half millennia, he's amassed quite the collection; that library is curated to hell and back, everything has its place and section and he's probably got some truly old and cursed artifacts in there too, big ol' dusty tomes and shaky books bound by magic seals. if you think him going around barefoot wouldn't fit his vibes; well, he largely goes around walking on his tentacles like a huge, goopy spider. it's much more practical and helps with making him look terrifying because idk about you but i would fucking hit the bricks if he'd come crawling at me at highspeeds. also, peak Old Man Nightmare characterization; he absolutely abhors modern technology (Killer had to beg him for wifi access and Nightmare had to relent lest Killer rips up his prized tapestries from sheer boredom like an understimulated cat).
meanwhile Dream, as much as he exudes the same royal vibes like his brother, he's much more of a People's Princess; he's got no tentacles to walk on, so his feet are permanently dirt-stained, since he prefers to stay out in nature. he also got no castle, but a quaint little cottage and big fields full of crops and sunflowers. though his clothes have the same aesthetic like Nightmare's, thematically they are much more subdued in design with less embellishments and hardier material to withstand his outdoor activities. he's a big gardener and forager – i actually love the idea of him being an excellent hunter, or being something close to a forest ranger. he's great with animals and due to his hunting, i think he'd use a falcon too. due to his skills, he'd be very handy and likes working with wood best. like his brother, he too is quite formal in his speech, but not as much as Nightmare. actually, he's much more willing to pick up "modern" phrases and wordings from his peers, even if he's struggling to understand most of it, so he can come across as rather awkward because he uses them wrong. i like the idea of him being mildly dyslexic; Nightmare had been the one to get him to sit still enough to teach how to read and write when they were younger, and while Dream still can, he often struggles with literary works and usually has someone assisting him with important documents.
