I love The Children of Men, in a very melancholy sadness kind of way. Its despotic images feel ever so real. This is a nice commentary on movie and its eerie representation of the present.Â
For those of you in class that were interested in the video we played today in class, "White Like Me". At 36:36 on the movie you can watch what was suppose to come up during group 10's presentation.
Due to the success of a hit TV show, Sister Wives, on TLC, the idea of plural marriage is becoming more familiar to most of us. However, despite what cable TV presents, plural marriage doesn't always just look like a man married to four women with a lots of kids! Plural marriage (AKA polygamy) means being married to more than one spouse at a time. Polygamy is the complete opposite of monogamy, or marriage to only one spouse at a time. Polygamy plays a very large role in other cultures around the globe.
There are three main types of polygamy which are polygyny, polyandry, and group marriage.
1. Polygyny is the marriage of one man to more than one woman at the same time. In the TV show, Sister Wives, the Browns practice this type of relationship. In the United States and many other Westernized countries it is illegal. The show began a couple of years ago and it started off with the Brown family having to flee from their home in Utah, which is a large Mormon populated area. The family had to pick up and leave in the middle of night and leave their entire life behind while they fled to a neighboring state. Other examples of polygyny is seen in the culture of the Luyha people of Kenya, Africa, as well as in parts of the Mormon faith of our modern world (which the Browns practice).
2. Polyandry is the marriage between one woman and multiple men. This is a less common type of polygamy than polygyny. Examples of polyandry kinships used to exist within the Toda people in Southern India.Â
3. Group Marriage is the last type of polygamy and is by far the rarest. This relationship is between multiple men and multiple women. However this type of relationship is non-existent in the modern world. I believe that the modern "Open Relationship" relationship branches off from group marriage on a smaller scale.Â
I love learning about these different kinds of relationships because it makes me look at different cultures and try to see life from their perspective. When my mom and I started watching Sister Wives we thought it was outrageous but after we opened our eyes and hearts we fell in love with their family! Sister Wives is of my moms and my favorite shows now.Â

The idea behind this post revolves around our discussion about cultural differences throughout the world. This video is part of a documentary called âGod Grew Tired of Us,â which follows a group of Sudanese men who move to America from Sudan. These men walked into America with no clue of what they would see and experience. It was culture shock, and although there are things they loved about America, they also hated things as well.
As we discussed in class, cultures evolve through various stages. Sudan is not as advanced as the United States is, and this can be seen from the short four minute clip Iâve attached. The Sudanese have not formulated the technology we have today, which makes our worlds seem lifetimes apart. We are aliens to them. We do not fit into their view of the world, and the minute they stepped into ours, people judged them and used the color of their skin against them. Racism exists everywhere, even the U.S.. People at the local gas station claimed to be intimidated when the âLost Boysâ all walked into the gas station at once, because of the color of their skin.Â
All in all, I think this video really shows how far we have NOT come. We are not making life easier for immigrants and visitors to our countries. We make them feel like aliens, yet we are the ones that act inhumane and unkind. Cultural differences exist and because of them wars are started and people are killed.Â
Costa Rica - The epicenter of Black Market Kidneys
This year in the United States, 100,000 people are on the list for kidney transplant. And many of them â more than 4,000 every year â will die waiting.
Thatâs because thereâs a huge imbalance between the global need for kidney transplants and the tiny supply of them, which the World Health Organization says amounts to âmaybe a tenth of the worldwide need.â
âThat adds up to tens of thousands of people every year who are on dialysis, on waiting lists and have no prospect, really, of getting a transplant any time soon,â says Kevin Sack, a national correspondent for The New York Times. That shortage prompts many people to buy kidneys illegally on the black market, which Sack has been investigating for the past year.

While not exactly in line with recent discussion in class, this devastating piece of topical news is something I think that can be evaluated with all forms of social science and otherwise. Terrorism is of modern importance and speculation, in that threats are seemingly becoming more and more often. In this case, it was an act of terrorism for the sake of the Islamic religion, as the gunmen were singling out Muslims and noted in the article to let Christians go. This horrible fact of prejudice and hate within our modern global society can be considered with thoughts on what it means to share culture and what it means to reject it, a topic we touched on in class toward the beginning of the year. Situations like this are an unfortunate repercussion of the rejection of cultural immersion and what it means to be a person in a functioning society. It is examples like these that lead to radicalism and false stereotypes on culture, as well as instilling fear in people to connect with and accept religions and cultures they are not born into. In a time of such a progressive society as laws and social norms are beginning to break boundaries in racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., terrorism is a sad and disgusting attempt to reject the change in our society towards accepting all cultures, religions, and so on. And probably the most heart-wrenching point of this situation? These people were the youth and leaders of the youth for the future, all attending the Kenyan College to receive an education to better their own lives and the lives of generations to come, as well as influence the world around them. This piece of news is unbelievably sad and it has been made clear that the world is grieving for them on an international scale, hopefully shining a light on the acceptance and love shared between cultures that is more powerful than the entity of hate.Â
Thirty miles from NYC, in the Ramapo Mountains of NJ, lives a forgotten indigenous people shrouded in mystery, fighting for acceptance as Native Americans - The Ramapough Mountain Indians.

Tyrus Wongâs expressive paintings caught Walt Disneyâs eye and became the visual guide for Bambi. Born in China, Wong â now 104 â used forged papers to enter the U.S. under the Chinese Exclusion Act.
In 1938, The Walt Disney Studio hired Wong as an âinbetweenerâ to draw the frames between the main drawings of the animators. Wong soon learned that the studio was trying to turn Felix Saltenâs novel Bambi into an animated film. After reading the story, he saw an opportunity to break out of his humdrum job.
"I said, âGee, this is all outdoor scenery,â " Wong recalls in a video featured in the museum exhibit. "I said, âGee, Iâm a landscape painter. This will be great!â "

âAn immigrant from Taishan, China, Wong was 9 years old when he first arrived in California with his father in 1919. The two were what was known as "paper sons": To enter the U.S. under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, they used forged documents to claim they were relatives of Chinese-American citizens. Such relatives were among the exceptions to the immigration restrictions (which were finally repealed in 1943).â
This is a pdf version of a pamphlet provided by the Ohio government. It includes definittions and explanations of what "kinship care" is, and the laws that surround it. I found it interesting to read about constitutional laws surrounding kinship ties and care-taking, as we have mostly been discussing cultural norms in class. There are social obligations of kinship and then there are politcal, lawful obligations, some of which are outlined here that pertain to Ohio. It focuses mainly on the caring of children, specifically when biological parents are not avaiblle -- another concept we touched on, the fact that kinsip is not always biologically defined. This is an extremely interesting document useful for comparison.Â
