I bark at the star, but I don’t have the courage to jump and grab it.
Did you see the shitstorm on Viz's Instagram post for Orihime's BD? I was debating someone on whether Ichigo showed romantic feelings for Orihime and they said that "Ichigo went to SS to save RUKIA and went to HM to FIGHT GRIMMJOW!!" I mean how fking delusional is this. Rukia is obviously Ichigo'a most important nakama I haven't seen a single person say otherwise, but IRs can't even admit that Hime's an important friend! I told them that Ichi went to save Hime but was called a blind & blocked?!!
lol I haven’t seen it, but I’m not surprised. This argument has been peddled for years, which is crazy to me because it’s honestly so backwards from what actually takes place, both in the build-up to HM, and in the HM arc itself. And the funny thing is, they don’t even care if they’re butchering Ichigo’s character as long as it means they can make an anti-IH argument. This argument legit turns Ichigo into a callous, sword-swinging dude who lives for the thrill of the fight and doesn’t actually give a shit about protecting anyone who isn’t Rukia, not even a friend who has been taken into enemy territory. Ichigo, who has the word “protect” in his very namesake—but nah, who cares about protecting, I just want to fight someone lmao. The problem is, they took Grimmjow’s accusation that Ichigo only came to HM to fight and ran with it. Grimmjow made that accusation because he doesn’t understand Ichigo; he thinks Ichigo fights for the thrill of it, the same way he (Grimmjow) does. He doesn’t understand that Ichigo fights to protect. So, in a sense, Ichigo did go to HM to fight…..because he has to fight in order to protect. And he was fighting to protect Orihime (as well as the rest of his nakama who came along to help). Ichigo literally explains this at the end of the Grimmjow battle (x). He says, “like you said, I came here to fight you, and defeat you,” and then goes on to explain that it’s so he can protect his friends (with the most focus put on Orihime). It’s….not complicated lmao. But somehow that flew right over the antis heads. How embarrassing. These people took Grimmjow’s (wrong) accusation at face value and it’s like?? Do they even know who Ichigo is? Do they understand his character at all?Y’know…. he’s the same boy who walked around like a zombie, totally depressed the day Orihime was abducted. And “dove towards Ulquiorra after hearing him say [Orihime’s] name.” And rose up from the dead for her, chanting “I will protect her” even after dying and hollowfying, as she was the only thing that anchored him to his humanity….but yeah, he didn’t actually care about protecting her, right?
….Except, here’s Grimmjow, taunting Ichigo about wanting to do just that:
lmao. The most obvious thing in the world, the enemy taunting the hero about his certain special someone.
And here’s another little gem from the Grimmjow battle: “Ichigo is using that power for you! He’s fighting in his blood-splattered body all for you!!” But nah, this has nothing to do with wanting to protect Orihime, right?
And oh look, there’s Ichigo, momentarily taking himself out of the fight to shield her with his own body….But wait, I thought he was only there to fight? Why is he protecting Orihime??
And look at all that pain in his eyes when he sees how terrified Orihime is! But yeah, he’s totally pumped up and enjoying this fight, right? He can hardly contain his excitement!
And there he is again with pain in his eyes, watching Orihime continuously during the Grimmjow battle instead of actually focusing on the fight. He’s too distracted by her. Which ultimately leads to him nearly being defeated, because he was so focused on Orihime and so worried about her, his head and spirit were not in the fight….but wait a second, why isn’t his head and spirit in the fight if that’s what he came to HM for in the first place??? 🤔🤔🤔🤔Lmao like….do they even realize how backwards this argument is? Let me get this straight: He goes to HM, not for Orihime but to fight Grimmjow, but then when he’s finally fighting Grimmjow, he can’t even focus on the fight because he’s so focused on her? Honestly now.I mean, it’s literally pointed out that Ichigo didn’t have his usual fighting spirit during the Grimmjow battle, both by Nel and Grimmjow himself:
Nel remarks that Ichigo was invincible with his mask on last time. So what’s different this time, other than who he’s fighting (and why did he have his fighting spirit against the others but not Grimmjow if he came here FOR Grimmjow?) What’s happened to his usual fighting spirit? Why does he seem so down and listless? (Hint: it’s because Orihime is there this time, and he can’t stop fucking worrying about her. We know this because *spoiler alert* as soon as Orihime calls out to him towards the end of the fight, he goes back to his normal self again.)
Grimmjow’s legit pissed off that Ichigo doesn’t seem to have his usual fighting spirit or “killing intent” against him. He’s not pumped up about the fight, and that aggravates Grimmjow….But yeah, Ichigo totally only went to HM to fight Grimmjow, right?I mean, there’s honestly dozens of ways to debunk this argument, but I think the greatest of them all (other than the fact that Ichigo debunks it himself with his words before the final blow lmao) is that when Ichigo lost his usual fighting spirit (against Grimmjow!) and was nearing defeat and had almost given up (against Grimmjow!) it was Orihime calling out to him that completely rejuvenated Ichigo. It was Orihime who gave him back the will to fight. SHE was the turning point of the entire Grimmjow battle.
Enough said.

ICHIHIME WEEK DAY 01: ANNIVERSARY / GENTLE HANDS (INSP.)
Ichigo reassuring Orihime throughout the manga ❣️/ Orihime Ver
“Can’t Believe I Gotta Deal With These Oblivious Nerds In Love” pt. 4 featuring Rukia
happy birthday, rukia! (⌒▽⌒)☆ also dedicated to @kylornx
The thing is, I don't hate Ichihime, but could you explain me what makes Orihime stand out to Ichigo? Because the way I see it, Ichigo is very protective of most of his friend tbh..
Ichigo isn’t just protective of his friends; he wants to protect everyone, or “a mountain of people” in his words.Where it became interesting/significant and indicative of deeper romantic feelings is when one of the people he wanted to protect was a) consistently singled out from all others on numerous occasions and b) Ichigo’s desire to protect that person was emphasized/highlighted/focused on the most. And that person was Orihime.
Ichigo is using that power…for you. He’s fighting in his blood-splattered body, all for you!To quote from my masterpost:
Orihime is the one who was consistently targeted by Ichigo’s enemies to get to him, as if they clued into the soft spot he had for her and used it against him as a weakness. They used her specifically, time and time again, to taunt him into a fight, or fuck with him emotionally/psychologically.
It is such a classic romantic trope for enemies to go after the hero’s ‘certain special someone.’ And nearly ALL of Ichigo’s enemies went after Orihime. This effectively highlighted Ichigo’s underlying feelings for her as it triggered some of his strongest emotional reactions—his blind rage when they threatened her or used her to taunt him, his terror and panic when she’s in danger and he can’t get to her, the way he beats himself up when he fails to protect her, etc. Orihime was constantly singled out when she was used as a target and trigger:
*Glares at the enemy while shielding Orihime*
*Grimmjow aims his strongest cero at Orihime to get Ichigo to hollowfy*
*Throws himself in front of her and shields her with his own body*Which was immediately followed up with this:
You want to protect her? How sweet.
Let go of her.
Let Inoue go.
Get away from her.
SHUT UP!! MOVE!!!
You’ve gotten stronger…
Is it for that woman?
You bastards, what did you do to Inoue?
Now that’s a good face, Kurosaki!!!
His movements are unquestionably sharper than before…I was right in arranging for her to be here then.
Telling him Tsukishima attacked Inoue will only hurt his performance!!
I see…so he’s the one.
‘Ichigo’s not paying attention to me, I better mention Orihi-’
Yep, that worked.Ichigo was so fucking extra when it came to Orihime lmao. So dramatic!
And then you have Kubo pointing out in the text that Orihime was, in fact, the trigger to Ichigo’s emotionally-charged response. It’s no accident. He wrote these things on purpose. So why? What point was he trying to make here? The answer: Kubo reinforced this pattern and recurring theme over and over and over again to drop hints about Ichigo’s underlying romantic feelings, consistently putting the focus and emphasis on Orihime, Ichigo’s desire to protect her specifically, and his emotional responses when she’s in danger and/or he can’t protect her.As you said, Ichigo wants to protect all of his friends, but no other character was singled out as a point of focus anywhere near this much. And there’s more:
He drags some creep out of the classroom for coming on to Orihime—another classic romantic trope.
Bonus: Chizuru remarks, “…when did he get so protective?”
And Shinji points out that Ichigo reacted as if Orihime is his girlfriend. It didn’t escape Kubo’s mind that another guy coming on to Orihime triggered a reaction out of Ichigo, that the implication of Ichigo’s jealousy and protectiveness over her is what got him up and out of his seat. Kubo pointed it out in the text itself, and even teased Ichigo about it.
Tsukishima comes to his house, brainwashes his friends and sisters. All of this escalates, and builds up to the moment when Ichigo finally snaps and attacks Tsukishima. And the straw that breaks the camel’s back? The thing that finally sets Ichigo off?Is when Tsukishima calls Orihime.
He mentions Chad and Orihime first, but Ichigo doesn’t attack when they’re both mentioned—no, no. For the hundredth time, Kubo made it a point to single Orihime out. Ichigo listens and waits as he dials the phone, listens and waits as it rings. And then, as soon as Orihime is singled out even further, as soon as Orihime’s name is mentioned, as soon as he realizes it’s Orihime on the line, you see Ichigo’s eye in the bottom panel blacken over with seething rage.
Ichigo finally snaps. He punches Tsukishima, throws him into a wall. And Orihime was the catalyst. Look at the panels—Kubo drew them so that we’re viewing the scene from Ichigo’s perspective: drawing closer and narrowing in on Tsukishima like a shark, frame by frame, as Tsukishima talks to Orihime, soft and slightly suggestive, laughing and flirting a bit, if you will. And he gets thrown into a wall. So, that’s twice now that an enemy has gotten too-close-for-comfort with Orihime on purpose just to taunt Ichigo, and twice now that Ichigo has thrown said enemy into a wall for trying to make a move on Orihime. Interesting.
Now, top all of that off with the fact that Ichigo’s desire to protect Orihime was so strong it transcended death—that he’s dead on the floor with a hole in his chest but can somehow still hear her voice, and with his very last vestiges of life, he tells himself he must stand up, he WILL protect her. If that’s not indicative of deeper, latent/subconscious feelings, idk what is.
He even attacked his own friend, yet immediately turned to Orihime chanting “I will protect her.” Even in death, the desire to protect her still persisted. Even after hollowfying, it was the one shred of his real self and humanity that remained intact: his desire to protect Orihime.
And, once again, we have yet another classic romantic trope: the love-interest being in danger, which triggers some sort of level-up or burst of uncontrollable power from the hero, even when it seemed all hope was lost, as his desire to protect her is what pushes him to keep going or rejuvenates him. The hollow did the physical rejuvenating obviously, but Ichigo vowed to protect Orihime both before and after he hollowfied.
Now, top all of THAT off with the way he mopes around and beats himself up for failing to protect Orihime.
The way he walked around like a lifeless zombie with dark circles under his eyes after she was abducted.
And after the first espada invasion:
He got down on his knees at her bedside and apologized for failing to protect her. This is Ichigo’s flashback of the scene—meaning he was still thinking about it the next day, still kicking himself over how hurt she looked and remembering what she said to him. Then he approached her AGAIN at school that next day:
The look in his eyes is so pained, and he couldn’t even get the words out because he felt so guilty and ashamed for not protecting her, as if that’s his duty in life and he failed. His body language says it all: hands in his pockets, shoulders sagging, head/eyes tilted down. He felt so guilty he could barely even look at her. He was already acting like it was his job to protect Orihime, before he had even vowed to do so!This is a whole lot of emphasis to put on Ichigo’s protectiveness and emotional reactions involving Orihime—again, raising the question of his underlying romantic feelings for her. Why is so much focus being put on her?
He moped around like this, all sad and beating himself up, because he couldn’t protect Orihime. Tatsuki and Chad are mentioned too, but the most focus is put on Orihime. Again, why?And then:
He literally bowed before Orihime, looked her right in the eyes, and made a singular, exclusive vow to protect her specifically. Just her. No one else.
The question you raised was, “what makes Orihime stand out to Ichigo? Because the way I see it, Ichigo is very protective of most of his friend tbh..”And yet, here he is, only vowing to protect Orihime. Remember that he just mentioned how Chad and Tatsuki got hurt too, but yet Orihime is the ONLY one he is shown apologizing to, the ONLY one whose bedside he kneels at. The ONLY one he is shown approaching again at school, the only one he exclusively vows to protect like this.So why? Why only her? Why is she so special to him? What sets her apart from the other “just friends” ?Why did Kubo feel the need to put the focus on Ichigo’s desire to protect Orihime specifically, emphasizing it more than his desire to protect any other character, time and time again? What major hint was he implying through this pattern and recurring theme?
The answer was always obvious.

The Beauty & The Beast
…unable to stay bound in a palace with the man her parents forced her to wed that night, she escaped with the help of her fairies. Running with all her might she ventured into the very woods she was forbidden to enter, and comes face to face with the monster she had been told about that evening.
He was big in structure, with sharp horns that adorned his head, luscious hair with the oddest hue, and a dark tattoo imprinted on his skin with a hollow hole in his chest.
Shocked Princess Orihime froze in her place and watched with unnerving eyes as the monster came toward her. She had thought that the monster was just a farce, a lie that would make her fear leaving the palace grounds.
But now she knew that her fiancé had been saying the truth, the monster does exist and it will kill her in cold blood as he described.
“…I will…” the monster groaned lowly.
It speaks…? Orihime thought silently.
“…help…her…” the monster declared more loudly now. “I…will help her,” it said with more comprehension.
Help her…?
Does he mean me? Orihime blinked with confusion, as the monster suddenly paused and screamed in agony.
The ground trembled under her as the monster was consumed in a bright light that blinded her for a moment. Before it dispersed like smoke and showed the broken fragments of the mask the monster wore…to reveal a handsome man.
A…human?
The monster was actually a human, she was baffled as the man fell forward into the rubble under him. Without hesitation or fear she rushed to his side and with shaking hands turned his body over only to find that the hole in his chest was gone.
“How is that possible?” She gasped as her fingers traced over the defined spot with curiosity.
At the touch of her smooth skin the man awoke, to find at first a distorted vision and the sensation of rain against his body. He blinked and was surprised at the beautiful woman looking down at him with sincere worry.
Something echoed through his mind, and he inhaled deeply as he was bewitched by her two amber colored orbs.
“It is her, she is the one…”
