I love that psychic powers are still "allowed" in science fiction. They're an acceptable part of the aesthetic. Like you can't have magic, but you can have brain magic, because it's more Science.

At the time when a lot of classic scifi was written, the pseudo-scientific, academic veneer surrounding psychics had yet to be tarnished. There were university-backed research labs conducting "research" into psychic phenomena. The military and CIA were actively investigating how psychic powers could be used to fight the commies. The CIA even circulated an internal memo condemning James Randi's efforts at debunking psychics and accusing him of "gross distortions". Of course, it was all bullshit, but to scifi writers of the 50s, 60s and 70s, "in the future, scientists will discover psychic powers" seemed like as plausible a hypothesis as, like, faster-than-light space travel. And as a result, psychic powers have been grandfathered in to more recent scifi.

look i don’t go to church and i don’t care about christianity in any way besides critiquing it, but those southern/midwest megachurches are something else man. imagine going to mass at a strip mall you’re sitting in a shitass carpeted conference room with a drop ceiling and a few flatscreens and your pastor starts talking about how money is the root of all evil and give the church your money to be christlike while wearing a 5,000 dior sweater and acne jeans. not to victim blame but you have to be so deeply brainwashed and also brainDEAD to go along with that i’m sorry. i can only point and laugh. how do you let someone play right in your face like that, holiness be damned. i’ll tell you what, that would not fly in a quaker community they’d exile your ass

what is most special about my baby kitty is the light of life inside of her. not her intelligence, or any of her abilities, not anything that she does in particular (though she has many very charming idiosyncracies). what moves me about her is this gleam of aliveness that comes off of her, the movement of air in her rising and falling body, the transition of food from bowl to litterbox, her muscles rearranging as she shifts in her sleep, the sneeze propelling from her, the way her soft water balloon belly can change shape depending on how she sits. she is alive, which is not a quality possessed by her, it is an ongoing process expressed through her with the motions of air, light, solid, and fluid. when i look into her eyes i catch a view of everything in the universe, as seen through just a tiny pinprick. i havent felt that way about a living creature before.
