Why Cognitive Science?
So you came into college and you’re either undeclared or are another major. If you were anything like me, you came in as a die-hard psychology student expecting everything you wanted and needed from school would be in your major. I can’t even entirely recall why I decided to take Cog 166 (introduction to cognitive science) but I believe it was recommended to me by someone. The parts of this study that got me to declare it as a major were all the neuropsychological disorders such as prosopagnosia (face blindness) or blind sight (being able to “see” but being unable to report seeing). I found these phenomena outrageously interesting, in fact I had never even heard of them until the introductory class. When I first came to college I thought there was only 2 options in my career which were counseling and research. This class showed me that I could take psychology in an entirely different way that was much more of a match for me and use it in combination with it’s interdisciplinary nature to carve out my own place to take psychology. The psychology degree and the cognitive science degree have so many overlapping courses that I finished half the major before even officially declaring it. It fitted so nicely with my psych major and has exposed me to many other classes I probably wouldn’t have though to take such as philosophy and linguistics.
One of the best parts of college is realizing how many career fields are out there, then studying and falling in love with it.

Divers find wreck of 18th century sloop in depths of Lake Ontario
ALBANY, N.Y.—The second-oldest confirmed shipwreck in the Great Lakes, an American-built, Canadian-owned sloop that sank in Lake Ontario more than 200 years ago, has been found, a team of underwater explorers said Wednesday.
The three-member western New York-based team said it discovered the shipwreck earlier this summer in deep water off Oswego, in central New York. Images captured by a remotely operated vehicle confirmed it is the Washington, which sank during a storm in 1803, team member Jim Kennard said.
“This one is very special. We don’t get too many like this,” said Kennard, who along with Roger Pawlowski and Roland “Chip” Stevens has found numerous wrecks in Lake Ontario and other waterways.
The sloop Washington was built on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania in 1798 and was used to transport people and goods between western New York, Pennsylvania and Ontario. Read more.
History is pretty cool!
