you are wonderful! the stuff you have written for lazarus is interesting and his interactions are definitely fun to read. his 'origin story' is the best thing though. i just have a soft spot for characters with hard childhoods... i hope to see more of him anyway!

“ . . . I don’t think I want to understand the point of this holiday.”
“Well, then you put it that way… yeah, I guess. It’s supposed to represent the gunfire and explosions of the Revolutionary War. Except, you know, for all the different colors,” Steve mused. He winced a little himself as another firecracker snapped off somewhere in the trees, a series of staccato pops that bounced off of the trunks all around them.
As he watched his friend coil into himself, a feathery spring growing tenser by the minute, Steve reconsidered his plan to introduce Laz to the more explosive American traditions.
“…Alright, so, this was a bad idea,” he admitted, mouth pulled sheepishly to the side. “Wanna get outta here?”
「 Oh man. Did it ever remind Lazarus of gunfire. The round of noise from the firecracker had the feathers along his body standing on end, Lazarus continuing to try and grimace through it for Steve’s sake. Thank a higher power, Steve, that this man doesn’t have a vindictive bone in his body. Another low squeal wrenches itself out of his throat and he has to nod at his friends suggestion. 」
“If you don’t mind,” He said, even despite his stress his tone remained calm and so quiet it was almost lost in the general cacophony of this great American tradition.
“I don’t mean to offend you but I don’t think this is.. my thing.”
「 He looked at Steve pitifully before his attention was tore away to a loud explosion in the sky, face lost somewhere between discomfort and not quite amazement. The colours were pretty. Those he could enjoy. But it was.. everything else that wasn’t sitting well with him. Which was a shame, considering how much everyone else seemed to be enjoying them.」

From his tall overlooking stature he knelt down beside the other who was extremely tall, even when on the ground. “I can’t just leave you pal, not in this condition.” Steve’s hand gently moved over the strangers hand, just over his chest to help with applying pressure to the wound. His grip wasn’t enough to push in, but just enough to help seal the wound temporarily. “Come on buddy, I’ll take you there myself, hook your arm over my shoulder– the names Steve, Steve Rogers, by the way, I’m just here to help. Let’s get you up.”
「 Of course he wasn’t going to take no for an answer.
Irritation showed itself in the form of a quiet hiss as he was touched, Lazarus’ focusing on the man helping him. His wings were useless in this situation, one of them dragging behind him in a broken, depressing mess. Whatever that.. metal frisbee was, it really did a number on him. Reluctantly, he finally drapes his arm over Steve’s shoulder.
The name makes him squint and his pain addled brain is slow to catch up on why.」
“That- I know that name. But you.. You looked different the last time I saw you.” His eyebrows furrowed as he tried to figure out why. This was a city of wonders but changing someone completely wasn’t on it’s list of accomplishments.
“Nah jus’… thought you mighta been somethin’ I ain’t seen much of, but y’ don’t feel like it… ? If that makes sense? Wings’re interestin’ though. Ain’t seen any that look like that before.” Her explanation is not so much halfhearted as it is unintentionally vague. She’s not sure, after all, how he might take to being compared to a Fallen, if those even exist where he’s from, and she doesn’t want to offend. Upon hearing his question, she almost flushes– there she goes, assuming again– and holds up the ball in her hands a bit, head cocking in the direction of the nearby net.
“Oh, it’s… volleyball? It’s pretty simple, for th’ most part, if y’ wanna learn…?”
「This makes him give a curious trill, the avian’s silver eyes now focused on the other. Now this piqued his interest, not knowing of many people who were from his own universe nor could claim to know things like him. Even if it wasn’t the exact same there was still.. a sense of kinship there, to know people like him existed elsewhere. 」
“Only slightly. As I said I’m still... terribly new to most of this. Especially this multiverse thing. If you’re willing to explain, I promise I’m willing to listen.” Another smile, his large wings ducking sheepishly towards his frame. There was a sort of shyness about him and his quiet voice despite his impressive stature.
“And of course.. It seems interesting. Oh, I don’t.. believe I’ve given you my name. Terribly sorry, my names Lazarus. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

{ ◯ } ━ Three weeks? No; a little more, he thinks. Or maybe a little less. He isn’t sure.
He had been sent back to his universe for whatever reason, and to be completely honest? Nothing had changed. In fact, most people hadn’t even noticed he was gone. His family was still there, his friends were still there, and… Lazarus.
Lazarus was still there.
But not his Lazarus.
By the time he had realized he was back in Hive City, he could think of nothing more than finding his way home, finding his way to Lazarus ━
I can’t stop this feeling, Deep inside of me. Girl you just don’t realize, What you do to me.
It’s the sudden burst of song coupled with Tesla’s excited huffs that he realizes his phone is still on him, Lazarus’ set ringtone blaring through his jean pockets. His heart rate picks up at the sudden burst of sensations as he fumbles through his pockets to find his phone. Before the song can even continue a beat the device is pressed against his ear, his voice cracking as he speaks.

「 To be honest, Lazarus didn’t know what to do with himself upon finding himself suddenly alone. New found freedom didn’t exactly suit him and he more often than not found himself occasionally still trying to text Nik or calling him in hopes of getting something other than Sorry, the number you’re trying to reach has been disconnected.
Finding a new friend in Steve only helped so much. After all, the man had his own life to live. Lazarus was an adult. He could handle being on his own. He could.
The first week was fine, if not aimless. He filled his time with hiding out on his usual rooftops. And calling Nik. Less frequently than the first few days but just to see if his number had been reconnected somehow. By the middle of the second week, he’d taken to smashing and throwing his phone out of anger. His bed suddenly found itself mauled and Lazarus wasn’t sleeping as well as he’d liked. He and Steve still hung out, sure, maybe a little more often than they were used to, but it was fine. He still had a handle on this.
Towards the third week, he began reflecting on why Nikola might have left. With it came delusions of another life, of one where he’d been cruel to Nikola. Delusions where he’d croon about love only to show it through physical violence. With these memories came blood. A lot of blood.
He wasn’t sure just how many of those delusions were real.
By the end of the third week, he’d given up on calling. The contact number was gone, and Lazarus had began his ‘acceptance’ stage.
Lazarus had been dozing when his phone pinged to alert him to a group of new numbers. He begrudgingly opened his eyes to see who it was and immediately became more alert as he saw a name he recognized. Almost immediately, he fumbled with the small device and hit ‘call’. 」
“ . . . “
「 He opened his mouth to speak but all that came out was a soft, awkward sounding squeal. Smooth. 」

“Carry me,” An incredulous chirp comes from deep in his battered torso. “Right. Thank you for the concern, ah.. I didn’t. Get your name. But I’m fine. I can walk. If you could point me to the nearest hospital I’d be grateful.”
“Now, now, don’t jinx it.”
He returned the grin, hiding his surprise at the man’s peculiar vocalization. Like a bird, hm? It went with the wings.
“Just for my own peace of mind, I’d like visual confirmation that nothing has been tampered with since.”
“Then don’t make it so easy for me to do so.”
「With the expected grace of a man like him, Lazarus stood and let his mottled wings spread and stretch. Feathers were shook loose before he curled them close to his body in order to duck under the bars and beams of the still in progress building. The avian disappears for a moment in the shadows cast by brick and steel only to reappear on a beam directly over the mage. 」
“Tell me. About yourself, I mean. You don’t look like the kind of man that bothers himself with things like this. Like you have people to pay to come and potentially risk their life. And the concerned citizen facade doesn’t sit well on you.“
“Cat!”
「Before he can stop himself, he speaks. It’s such an odd thing to see a cat lounging on the beach, but there it was curled carefully under the shade of a palm tree. Whatever Lazarus was doing isn’t as terribly important as figuring out who left a cat on the beach, he thinks as he makes his way to the feline.
He makes sure to keep his distance as he crouches down in the hot sand, wings rising to provide some kind of shade to him as he smiled and held out a hand. 」
“Are you a stray? Or did someone leave you here..?”

“Are you…?” The words stick before she can get them out, the incomplete thought stopping short and seeming stupid to her, despite the height and the wings the other sports. Having to look up in a rare instance, she winds up frowning slightly to herself, the thought still persisting. Closing her eyes and shaking her head, she looks at him once again and gives a somewhat nervous smile, holding up the volleyball in her hands. “Uhhhm… wanna play?”
“Am I..?”
「 He knows the questions that are about to come. About the wings. About the eyes or the teeth. Some sort of smart comment about possibly being an angel, perhaps. Nothing alien to him although tiresome to hear. But he still looks at her in good humor as he ties the mass of his hair up into something more manageable. 」
“I’m not going to bite. You can ask.” When he was done he gave her a smile and held up his hands in a non threatening display. Though he quickly swaps out amusement for confusion.
“Play.. what, exactly? You’ll have to forgive me. I’m not.. particularly well versed in.. A lot of things, actually.”
Given that the park was deserted, comparatively, to the other sectors- all the trees meant that the more spectacular fireworks displays were in sectors four and five- Steve was counting on a less drastic first experience with pyrotechnics for his flighty, feathered friend.
How’d that old poem go again? The best-laid plans of mice and men/ Often go to shit?
Steve waved as he saw Lazarus’ hulking silhouette, familiar after the time they’d spent hassling the invading militias during the mirror-hive incident, and called out-
“Laz, over here! I got us some popco-oh, uh,” he paused and looked up, taking in Laz’s distinctly hunted expression.
“…You doin’ okay there, pal?”
“I’m fine,” He managed grind out between clenched teeth. It wasn’t that big of a problem, really. Just incredibly loud and not at all what he was expecting. He could deal with it, really.
「 Though when one of the fireworks let out a particularly hellacious sounding scream, he was right back to baring his teeth and his wings were slowly rising as if he was about to make a run for it.
This wasn’t the worst thing Lazarus had ever been through. Not by a long shot. But Steve had asked him to attend ..whatever this torture was and he didn’t plan on just leaving the guy hanging. That was bad manners and the avian was raised better than that.
So instead, he swallowed down how uncomfortable he was and gave his friend an expression that was more of a wince than a smile. 」
“This, this is normal custom, yes? You celebrate your country by setting it on fire?”
