reading and watching “classic” books and films is such an interesting experience because, before you get into them, when you only know them by name and maybe the vaguest plot outline, they’re intimidating and stuffy and up on a pedestal, but then you finally take the leap and check them out and realize that almost every story that’s achieved such a legendary level of popularity did so because something in its emotional core reached out and grabbed a lot of people by the throat and you are NOT immune.

So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. And, unfortunately, as this has progressed, this has resulted in a lot of men sectioning themselves off from, frankly, everything that actually makes being alive worthwhile. It's a misery spiral, and the only way out is to abandon male supremacy.

Imagine if people watched Interview with the Vampire and it inspired them to think about how the past is in a very real way inaccessible to us and memory can be misleading even when you're not being dishonest and different people can have different experiences of the same event that feel emotionally true and are very real to the people who experienced them even if they contradict each other and often you will never be able to know what really happened and how this can make repairing damaged relationships difficult and threatening to a person's sense of self

number one complaint about this show that annoys me is when people want to be spoon-fed their own moral interpretation of things by the writers because they basically want prescriptive psa storytelling. why is no one calling out daniel's racist microagressions? why did madeleine not acknowledge that she could not consent under nazi occupation? why does lestat not explicitly address the childhood grooming that led to his incestuous relationship with gabriella? why won't this show tell me that these things are Bad so i can feel morally satisfied? why does this show make me uncomfortable when everything is about my comfort? it must be that the writers are not doing this on purpose and it's bad writing, not that i'm incapable of or unwilling to engage in nuanced thought when watching a show with problematic characters by design
