kay, kind of lukewarm? i know this is supposed to read as a typical love story gone wrong but i feel like my attention was more directed towards maria's character + the implications her trajectory ignites more than anything. hence why i would probably give it 4 starts and not 3 (3 if it were just a sad love story without such good characterisation)
i think her daughter having an absent father, just like she did, is critical to the ending of the story. i found that it was because of maria's lack of visible affection between two parents at a young age, that she is so reluctant to accept she has genuine feelings for raif or that affection outside of lust and womanising objections, can actually exist in reality and not just in her imagination.
what's ACTUALLY sad about this story (because yes i donβt think it was ostensibly sad sorry) is that the indication is that her daughter will probably go through the same life cycle- giving herself away to men, making herself an object of lust - because she doesn't believe/know that any other form of "love" exists. and so just like her mother, she will end up finding love and then meeting a terrible fate
buuuuut maybe iβm reading into it too much and the initial narrative is simply shallow. perhaps maybe 3 stars would be more accurate??
but honestly if the aim of this short story was to show more than just a tragic love story- hell i'd give it 5 stars but i'm indecisive so read it!
