Original Fic Fest - Romantic Relationship Day
My WIP Blackborn is first and foremost an action-packed fantasy novel, and I didnât intend for any romance⌠But when writing my characters Kaya and Taron, they made it obvious to me that I was wrong. They had been not only friends, but lovers before, and at the start of the story they are not over each other.
For @originalficfest s day 2, I decided to jump back in time an give you their first kiss, 9 years ago - Kaya is about 16, Taron 18.
Even though he knew what to watch out for, Taron only caught the shortest glimpse of a slender gray figure landing on the pavement behind the guards and swiftly vanishing around the corner of the next street.
âAll right, fine.â He lifted his palms toward the guards in front of him appeasingly. âIf your young master does not want to receive me, will you at least give him a message from me?â
The taller guard exchanged a helpless look with his colleague and started anew. âMonsire, please, just leave this matter alone. We do not know, who you are.â
Taron flung the flamboyant yellow cape over his shoulder. âOf course he keeps me a secret. I should have known. Well, tell Lazar that I he shall drown in -â
âMonsire,â the guard insisted. âYou must be mistaken. This is the mansion of Councilwoman Beylina Ashari. You must have come to the wrong house.â
âThis treacherous -â Taron stopped in the middle of the sentence. âOh no. Oh by Royana, divine guardian of love and chaos, please, please tell me that you are joking with me.â
The guardâs relief was almost palpable. âNo, monsire. There is no Lazar here.â
âYou might want to try the other side of Tismur Boulevard. I believe there might be a young gentleman of that name living in the corner houseâ, the other guard added.
âThank you so much. I⌠Well, I shall go there.â Taron had to bite back a grin. He knew the place the guard had referred to. Councilman Basrialâs estate. No Lazar to be found there. The rivalry of these politicians obviously had influenced their guards as well.
Taron spun around on his heel, not bothering with any words of goodbye. He felt the ridiculous cape fluttering around his body, dramatically underlining his retreat as he marched around the corner leading to Tismur Boulevard.
Behind him, he heard a faint chuckle from the guards. Only then he allowed himself his own small grin.
âDivine guardian of love and chaos, youâre a naturalâ, an amused voice said, right by his shoulder. Taron flinched aside, cursing.
âYouâre despicable, Kay. I pulled this freaking drama to cover for your exit, and you, you still are cheap enough to jump me from the side.â
Kaya laughed to herself, as she fell in along his steps. She had changed her dark gray garb for a plain green dress with a matching headscarf, somehow even enhancing the mischievous sparkle in her amber eyes. âItâll never grow old. Besides, I need some fun. Being the only one here actually working for her share, while you are just talking and flashing that fancy yellow cape around.
Taron shrugged off the cape and handed it to her. âLetâs hope they only remember my style in clothing and not my charming smile.â He retrieved a white southern-style scarf from his bag and arranged it around his head and shoulders artfully. âHow do I look now? Different enough?â
Kaya turned in front of him, forcing him to stop in his steps, while she looked up at his face.
âHandsomeâ, she said.
Taron raised an eyebrow. âThatâs⌠not what I meant.â
âIt is what I meant.â Kaya didnât move aside.
Taron blinked. âKaya, this⌠this isnât funny. Weâre not children any more.â
âIndeed, weâre not.â Kaya held his gaze. âI have seen you looking at me, when you think no one is noticing. And I have seen you looking at the guys I ⌠spend time with. Iâm not your little sister any longer.â
Taron shook his head. âYou never wereâ, he said quietly.
âWell, in that caseâŚâ The corners of Kayaâs mouth twitched into a tiny smile and she slowly lifted her hand towards his cheek.
Taron caught her wrist. âKay, donât. Donât let your excitement guide you into some folly youâll regret once you wake up tomorrow morning. I⌠WeâŚâ
âNot âsome follyâ,â Kaya cut him off. âTrust me, Taron, this is something Iâve been wanting for quite some time.â
She flicked her wrist free. âOr do you fear youâll be the one regretting it?â Despite her teasing tone, there was a touch of nervousness to her voice, a vulnerability Taron had never seen in her before. Shit. Kaya was serious. Gods be damned.
And she was right, he was afraid. If they went down this road, everything in their lives would change. Turn fragile. Be at risk.
But then again, risk was something they both were thriving for.
Taron felt a smile playing around his lips, as he reached for her hand.
âHereâs to love and chaosâ, he said, and drew her towards him.
