how do you go about designing/finding unique objects for your characters? I always struggle thinking of things that haven't been thought of lol

when it comes to making unique designs in the osc... you have to kind of accept that there's probably like 5 other similar characters. there are only so many objects in the world before you just start making things up!

when i design characters, i try to do less object-with-limbs and more object-that's-alive. the difference is how you use the object in the anthropomorphization. for example, here are some old doodles I did of characters from other stuff but with my character design style for oa:

sometimes i don't change much, sometimes i do. but i like to at least try to think of ways to add unique function to each character.

a lot of times it's less about what object you choose and more how you use that object in the design. can i turn this hole into a mouth or an eye? is the character something inside of the object, or do they have something inside of them? how does that function? What can I add to the design to give it more character?

most of the time I get my objects by just paying attention to the little items around my house and thinking about how they can become characters. infinity cube, arcade ticket, and carpenter's pencil were all sitting on my desk. LED and whiteboard were in my class. The other characters were concepts I had had in my mind for a while and was waiting to use. I try to think of them as some sort of creature first and work up from there.

Something that can help with figuring out unique ways to depict object characters is to look at anthro object stuff outside of the osc. i like to take inspiration from things like the Brave Little Toaster, Bugsnax, Deltarune, and those crazy drawings furries make sometimes where they turn things into awesome creatures.

i still use a distinctly osc style, but the changes inspired by non-osc works make my designs more unique!

my FINAL thing is that I like to do a design exercise where i take something that isn't a proper object, like a concept (or a shadow), and try to make them into a character. it's difficult but it is a lot of fun and it helps me think outside the box more!

i've had this specific part planned out before ii s2e16 released, and i just didn't want to change it. this isnt my only comic that the ii s2 finale ripped off used similar ideas to, but this is the only one that i'm actually continuing despite it (RIP gmolab... maybe someday). head in my hands.

1 out of an estimated 5 pages left in this chapter are complete, i'm not leaving right before the end... again. and im making an ACTUAL outline for chapter 2, as all of chapter 1 was pansted with no written direction. maybe you could tell lol
