BACKSTORY
Daniel James O’Toole was born on May 14, 1841 to Harold and Eliza O'Toole in Clara, County Offaly, Ireland. He was the younger sibling to Margaret O'Toole, who was born on April 3, 1838. Only a few short years after Daniel was born, Ireland suffered during the Great Famine, and left his family – among thousands of others – impoverished, starved, and sickly. Daniel was only 13 years old when his father passed away due to disease and malnutrition. His mother, who had also become frail, tried to hold herself together for her children. Margaret took up the role as another parental figure for Daniel; even though she was only a few years older than him, Margaret cared for him the majority of the time. Eliza had to work three jobs to support the family after Harold passed away.
When Daniel was 19 years old, Margaret fell ill with influenza. Because of the impoverishment in his town, Margaret could not be treated, and all of the doctors in town said that it was only a matter of time before Margaret died from the sickness. Daniel was overwhelmed by this news, and he spent hours every night researching and finding ways to heal Margaret himself. He had begun to lose hope over time, and it wasn’t until he stumbled across a book on demons in his local library that he believed there was absolutely no hope at all of saving his sister.
The book Daniel found was old and worn, and it had not been touched by any resident of his little town for many years. Inside, it went over the process of making a demon deal, and he had only gotten through a small portion of its history and effects before he was researching how to make a deal himself. He knew that it was against his Catholic religious beliefs and morals to do so, but he was so desperate to make a deal that he didn’t care about the consequences.
And so, he made the deal.
He was, in fact, so desperate that he allowed the demon that he summoned to trick him into taking five years off of his time on Earth, making him only 24 years old when the hellhounds finally came to retrieve him. He didn’t even care that his time left on Earth was short; Margaret was healed almost immediately, and the doctors around town claimed that her recovery was a miracle.
Daniel kept track of the days he had left on Earth. Even then, he treated every day as if it was his last, picking up odd jobs and giving half his money to Margaret, and the other half to families around town that needed it more than he did. He was loved by everyone he knew, and his town was absolutely devastated when Daniel one day went missing five years after his sister’s recovery. The search party that was sent out to find him never even found his body; some parishioners of his local church claimed that he was taken to Heaven for being such a devout individual.
The reality, however, was quite the contrary.
Daniel O'Toole reached Hell and was thrown into a region and tortured for hundreds upon hundreds of years. He and the other righteous souls who had sacrificed themselves for a loved one were subject to intense burns, as a technicality to avoid the first apocalyptic seal from breaking was to assure that a righteous soul did not shed blood in Hell.
Daniel’s soul became twisted by the torture, eventually resembling that of a demon’s. He, like many other souls in Hell, was offered to torture other souls instead of being tortured. Daniel had turned this offer down for hundreds of years, but he eventually took the offer when he had finally devised a plan himself.
The souls that were to torture others had more of a free pass to wander where they wanted in Hell, so as long as they did not leave the confines of their region. Daniel, who was given the name Orias and willingly accepted it, had heard whispers of a demon by the name of Crowley, who had just become the king of Hell. Orias disobeyed the rules of his region and crossed the border of the region in search of Crowley. He wandered long and far until he came upon the king, and it took a long period of begging and reasoning with other demons before he could even reach Crowley himself.
Unlike many demons, who approached Crowley in search for power, Orias had a rather humble request: that all pure souls who made deals with pure intentions had a place to go in Hell that was less brutal than what he and countless others had to go through. Crowley almost immediately dismissed Orias, until the clever demon pointed out that crossroads demons could use this new region as a way to get more people to make deals, in addition to ensuring no apocalyptic seals were broken.
Crowley, being a new king and fearing the rise of Lucifer, found this idea rather intriguing and gave Orias a region and leadership over it to make it the way he felt it should be. Souls slowly made their way into this new region, and it was soon named Terrena Inferni – or Earthly Hell – due to its Earth-like feel. It was also nicknamed the Neutral Region, since whenever there was a conflict in Hell, Orias wanted nothing to do with them. Crowley allowed this to be so, as Orias had done him a favor.
TERRENA INFERNI
Terrena Inferni, or the Neutral Region, is a concept created entirely by the admin of this blog.
Terrena Inferni, sometimes referred to as Terrena or the Neutral Region, is a more earthly region of Hell. Souls in this region do not get tortured as they do in other regions in Hell. Instead, souls in the region are subject to conditions that they would not wish to feel on Earth: constant hunger and thirst, uncomfortableness in the environment around them, a looming feeling of sadness. Souls in the region commonly see things that haunted them in their lifetime, whether it be the reason they sold their soul or someone they could not save. Since Hell has to be somewhat of a punishment, the region’s environment had to punish the souls in it somehow, even if they did not deserve it.
Located outside of other areas in Hell, Terrena is untouched by Crowley, even when he redesigned Hell and made it into a large queue. Souls in Terrena feel a constant feeling of uncomfortableness and hunger, as if they were homeless people on Earth. The environment itself is unpredictable and makes the souls that reside there feel perpetually uncomfortable. It is usually on the colder side, with random spikes of scorching hot weather at inconvenient times. The souls eat and sleep as humans would, but they never get enough of anything they consume, and they never get enough sleep. Even the region looks rather earthly; there are buildings in the region that resemble run down shacks and saloons from all different time periods.
When conflicts arise in Hell, such as the fight for the throne between Crowley and Abaddon, Orias stays out of taking sides, giving his region the nickname of the Neutral Region.
When any demons from outside of the region enter inside, it is common for them to feel weakened; even demons who enter the region are subject to the effects of the region.
